Optimal Dynamic Procurement Policies for a Storable Commodity with L\'evy Prices and Convex Holding Costs
In this paper we study a continuous time stochastic inventory model for a
commodity traded in the spot market and whose supply purchase is affected by
price and demand uncertainty. A firm aims at meeting a random demand of the
commodity at a random time by maximizing total expected profits. We model the
firm's optimal procurement problem as a singular stochastic control problem in
which controls are nondecreasing processes and represent the cumulative
investment made by the firm in the spot market (a so-called stochastic
"monotone follower problem"). We assume a general exponential L\'evy process
for the commodity's spot price, rather than the commonly used geometric
Brownian motion, and general convex holding costs.
We obtain necessary and sufficient first order conditions for optimality and
we provide the optimal procurement policy in terms of a "base inventory"
process; that is, a minimal time-dependent desirable inventory level that the
firm's manager must reach at any time. In particular, in the case of linear
holding costs and exponentially distributed demand, we are also able to obtain
the explicit analytic form of the optimal policy and a probabilistic
representation of the optimal revenue. The paper is completed by some computer
drawings of the optimal inventory when spot prices are given by a geometric
Brownian motion and by an exponential jump-diffusion process. In the first case
we also make a numerical comparison between the value function and the revenue

Neural Networks for Modeling and Control of Particle Accelerators
We describe some of the challenges of particle accelerator control, highlight
recent advances in neural network techniques, discuss some promising avenues
for incorporating neural networks into particle accelerator control systems,
and describe a neural network-based control system that is being developed for
resonance control of an RF electron gun at the Fermilab Accelerator Science and
Technology (FAST) facility, including initial experimental results from a

The Post-Newtonian Limit of f(R)-gravity in the Harmonic Gauge
A general analytic procedure is developed for the post-Newtonian limit of
-gravity with metric approach in the Jordan frame by using the harmonic
gauge condition. In a pure perturbative framework and by using the Green
function method a general scheme of solutions up to order is shown.
Considering the Taylor expansion of a generic function it is possible to
parameterize the solutions by derivatives of . At Newtonian order,
, all more important topics about the Gauss and Birkhoff theorem are
discussed. The corrections to "standard" gravitational potential
(-component of metric tensor) generated by an extended uniform mass
ball-like source are calculated up to order. The corrections, Yukawa
and oscillating-like, are found inside and outside the mass distribution. At
last when the limit is considered the -gravity converges
in General Relativity at level of Lagrangian, field equations and their

Cognitive speed and white matter integrity in secondary progressive multiple sclerosis
BACKGROUND: Processing speed (PS) deficits have been consistently observed in secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS). However, the underlying neural correlates have not been clarified yet. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between macrostructural and microstructural white matter (WM) integrity and performance on different cognitive measures with prominent PS load. METHODS: Thirty-one patients with SPMS were recruited and underwent neurological, neuropsychological, and MRI assessments. The associations between a composite index of PS abilities and scores on various tests with prominent PS load and T1-weighted and diffusion tensor image parameters were tested. Analyses were carried out using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS). RESULTS: VBM results showed that only the semantic fluency task correlated with grey matter (GM) volume in a range of cortical and subcortical areas bilaterally as well as the corpus callosum and the superior longitudinal fasciculus. TBSS analysis revealed consistent results across all the cognitive measures investigated, showing a prominent role of commissural and frontal associative WM tracts in supporting PS-demanding cognitive operations. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with SPMS, PS abilities are mainly dependent on the degree of both macrostructural and microstructural WM integrity. Preservation of associative WM tracts that support information integration seems crucial to sustain performance in tasks requiring fast cognitive processes
Innate immune activating ligand SUMOylation affects tumor cell recognition by NK cells
Natural Killer cells are innate lymphocytes involved in tumor immunosurveillance. They express activating receptors able to recognize self-molecules poorly expressed on healthy cells but up-regulated upon stress conditions, including transformation. Regulation of ligand expression in tumor cells mainly relays on transcriptional mechanisms, while the involvement of ubiquitin or ubiquitin-like modifiers remains largely unexplored. Here, we focused on the SUMO pathway and demonstrated that the ligand of DNAM1 activating receptor, PVR, undergoes SUMOylation in multiple myeloma. Concurrently, we found that PVR is preferentially located in intracellular compartments in human multiple myeloma cell lines and malignant plasma cells and that inhibition of the SUMO pathway promotes its translocation to the cell surface, increasing tumor cell susceptibility to NK cell-mediated cytolysis. Familism and family environment among suicidal Latinas: Three family types
This study examined the relationship between familism and family environment type as well as the relationship between family environment type and suicide attempts among Latina youth. Latina teen attempters (n=109) and non-attempters (n=107) were recruited from the NYC area. Latent class analysis revealed three family environment types: tight-knit; intermediate-knit; and loose-knit. Tight-knit families (high cohesion and low conflict) were significantly less likely to have teens that attempted suicide as compared to intermediate-knit families or loose-knit families. Moreover, familism increased the odds of being in the tight-knit family vs. the loose-knit family and the odds of being in the tight-knit family vs. the intermediate-knit. Results suggest that familism may protect against suicide behavior among Latinas via its influence on family environment

Using qualitative data collected from adolescent Latinas and their parents, this article describes ways in which family relationships are organized within low-income Latino families (n = 24) with and without a daughter who attempted suicide. Based on a family-level analysis approach, we present a framework that categorizes relationships as reciprocal, asymmetrical, or detached. Clear differences are identified: Families of nonattempters primarily cluster in reciprocal families, whereas families with an adolescent suicide attempter exhibit characteristics of asymmetrical or detached families. Our results highlight the need for detailed clinical attention to family communication patterns, especially in Latino families. Clinicians may reduce the likelihood of an attempt or repeated attempts by raising mutual, reciprocal exchanges of words and support between parents and daughter
