Stability of the pentaquark in a naive string model
The pentaquark is studied in a simple model of confinement where the quarks
and the antiquark are linked by flux tubes of minimal cumulated length, and the
Coulomb-like interaction, the spin-dependent terms and the antisymmetrization
constraints are neglected.. The ground-state is found to be stable against
spontaneous dissociation into a meson and a baryon, both in the case of five
equal-mass constituents and for a static quark or antiquark surrounded by four
equal masses.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, minor corrections, references added, to appear in

Thorium nanochemistry: The solution structure of the Th(iv)-hydroxo pentamer
Tetravalent thorium exhibits a strong tendency towards hydrolysis and subsequent polymerization. Polymeric species play a crucial role in understanding thorium solution chemistry, since their presence causes apparent solubility several orders of magnitude higher than predicted by thermodynamic data bases. Although electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI MS) identifies Th(iv) dimers and pentamers unequivocally as dominant species close to the solubility limit, the molecular structure of Th 5(OH) y polymers was hitherto unknown. In the present study, X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy, high energy X-ray scattering (HEXS) measurements, and quantum chemical calculations are combined to solve the pentamer structure. The most favourable structure is represented by two Th(iv) dimers linked by a central Th(iv) cation through hydroxide bridges. © 2012 The Royal Society of Chemistry
Combinatorics of lattice paths with and without spikes
We derive a series of results on random walks on a d-dimensional hypercubic
lattice (lattice paths). We introduce the notions of terse and simple paths
corresponding to the path having no backtracking parts (spikes). These paths
label equivalence classes which allow a rearrangement of the sum over paths.
The basic combinatorial quantities of this construction are given. These
formulas are useful when performing strong coupling (hopping parameter)
expansions of lattice models. Some applications are described.Comment: Latex. 25 page
Massive two-dimensional quantum chromodynamics
Quantum Chromodynamics in the decoupled formulation. We find that some general features of the massless theory, concerning the constraints and the right- and left-moving character of the corresponding BRST currents, survive in the massive case. The implications for the integrability properties previously valid in the massless case, and the structure of the Hilbert space are discussed
A New Look at the Axial Anomaly in Lattice QED with Wilson Fermions
By carrying out a systematic expansion of Feynman integrals in the lattice
spacing, we show that the axial anomaly in the U(1) lattice gauge theory with
Wilson fermions, as determined in one-loop order from an irrelevant lattice
operator in the Ward identity, must necessarily be identical to that computed
from the dimensionally regulated continuum Feynman integrals for the triangle
diagrams.Comment: 1 figure, LaTeX, 18 page

Lattice Discretization in Quantum Scattering
The utility of lattice discretization technique is demonstrated for solving
nonrelativistic quantum scattering problems and specially for the treatment of
ultraviolet divergences in these problems with some potentials singular at the
origin in two and three space dimensions. This shows that lattice
discretization technique could be a useful tool for the numerical solution of
scattering problems in general. The approach is illustrated in the case of the
Dirac delta function potential.Comment: 9 page
