Let X:R2\Dr->R2 be a differentiable (but not necessarily C1) vector field, where r>0 and Dr={z\in R2:|z|\le r}. If for some e>0 and for all p\in R2\Dr, no eigenvalue of D_p X belongs to (-e,0]\cup {z\in\C:\mathcal{R}(z)\ge 0}, then (a)For all p\in R2\Dr, there is a unique positive semi--trajectory of X starting at p; (b)\mathcal{I}(X), the index of X at infinity, is a well defined number of the extended real line [-\infty,\infty); (c) There exists a constant vector v\in R2 such that if \mathcal{I}(X) is less than zero (resp. greater or equal to zero), then the point at infinity \infty of the Riemann sphere R2\cup\set{\infty} is a repellor (resp. an attractor) of the vector field X+v.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure

Li-Yorke Chaos for Composition Operators on LpL^p-Spaces

Li-Yorke chaos is a popular and well-studied notion of chaos. Several simple and useful characterizations of this notion of chaos in the setting of linear dynamics were obtained recently. In this note we show that even simpler and more useful characterizations of Li-Yorke chaos can be given in the special setting of composition operators on LpL^p spaces. As a consequence we obtain a simple characterization of weighted shifts which are Li-Yorke chaotic. We give numerous examples to show that our results are sharp

Associating sporadic, foodborne illness caused by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli with specific foods : a systematic review and meta-analysis of case-control studies

    Get PDF
Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infections are a significant public health issue, with foodborne transmission causing >1 million illnesses worldwide each year. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO registry # CRD42017074239), to determine the relative association of different food types with sporadic illnesses caused by STEC. Searches were conducted from 01 August to 30 September 2017, using bibliographic and grey literature databases, websites and expert consultation. We identified 22 case-control studies of sporadic STEC infection in humans, from 10 countries within four World Health Organization subregions, from 1985 to 2012. We extracted data from 21 studies, for 237 individual measures in 11 food categories and across three status types (raw or undercooked, not raw and unknown). Beef was the most significant food item associated with STEC illness in the Americas and Europe, but in the Western Pacific region, chicken was most significant. These findings were not significantly moderated by the raw or cooked status of the food item, nor the publication year of the study. Data from the African, South-East Asian and Eastern Mediterranean subregions were lacking and it is unclear whether our results are relevant to these regions

Sunyaev-Zel'dovich clusters reconstruction in multiband bolometer camera surveys

We present a new method for the reconstruction of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) galaxy clusters in future SZ-survey experiments using multiband bolometer cameras such as Olimpo, APEX, or Planck. Our goal is to optimise SZ-Cluster extraction from our observed noisy maps. We wish to emphasize that none of the algorithms used in the detection chain is tuned on prior knowledge on the SZ -Cluster signal, or other astrophysical sources (Optical Spectrum, Noise Covariance Matrix, or covariance of SZ Cluster wavelet coefficients). First, a blind separation of the different astrophysical components which contribute to the observations is conducted using an Independent Component Analysis (ICA) method. Then, a recent non linear filtering technique in the wavelet domain, based on multiscale entropy and the False Discovery Rate (FDR) method, is used to detect and reconstruct the galaxy clusters. Finally, we use the Source Extractor software to identify the detected clusters. The proposed method was applied on realistic simulations of observations. As for global detection efficiency, this new method is impressive as it provides comparable results to Pierpaoli et al. method being however a blind algorithm. mCSM-AB: a web server for predicting antibody-antigen affinity changes upon mutation with graph-based signatures.

    Get PDF
Computational methods have traditionally struggled to predict the effect of mutations in antibody-antigen complexes on binding affinity. This has limited their usefulness during antibody engineering and development, and their ability to predict biologically relevant escape mutations. Here we present mCSM-AB, a user-friendly web server for accurately predicting antibody-antigen affinity changes upon mutation which relies on graph-based signatures. We show that mCSM-AB performs better than comparable methods that have been previously used for antibody engineering. mCSM-AB web server is available at http://structure.bioc.cam.ac.uk/mcsm_ab.This is the final published version. It first appeared at http://nar.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2016/05/23/nar.gkw458.full

Gamma-Ray Attenuation to Evaluate Soil Porosity: An Analysis of Methods

    Get PDF
Soil porosity (ϕ) is of a great deal for environmental studies due to the fact that water infiltrates and suffers redistribution in the soil pore space. Many physical and biochemical processes related to environmental quality occur in the soil porous system. Representative determinations of ϕ are necessary due to the importance of this physical property in several fields of natural sciences. In the current work, two methods to evaluate ϕ were analyzed by means of gamma-ray attenuation technique. The first method uses the soil attenuation approach through dry soil and saturated samples, whereas the second one utilizes the same approach but taking into account dry soil samples to assess soil bulk density and soil particle density to determine ϕ. The results obtained point out a good correlation between both methods. However, when ϕ is obtained through soil water content at saturation and a 4 mm collimator is used to collimate the gamma-ray beam the first method also shows good correlations with the traditional one
