REVISITING ENGEL'S LAW: EXAMINING EXPENDITURE PATTERNS FOR FOOD AT HOME AND AWAY FROM HOME
Expenditure patterns were examined for food partitioned into food at home and away from home to test the veracity of Engel's law. The analysis employed several functional forms and a Heckman two-step methodology to account for censored-response bias. Engel's law was verified in every case.Consumer/Household Economics,
Ortaokul öğrencilerinde okula bağlılığın yordanmasında algılanan sosyal destek ve değerin rolü
The aim of this study is to examine school attachment levels of secondary school students in terms of perceived social support and human value. The data of the study was obtained from a total of 317 secondary school students, including 192 girls and 125 boys in the 2015-2016 academic year. A correlational research model was used in this study. In the study, some scales are used as data collection tools as follows: School Attachment Scale developed by Hill and Werner (2006) and adapted to Turkish by Savi (2011), Moral Maturity Scale developed by Dilmaç (1999), Social Support Rating Scale for Children and Adolescents developed by Dubow and Ullman (1989) and adapted to Turkish by Gökler (2007). The correlation and stepwise linear multiple regression analysis are used in the analysis of the data. The analyses are tested with the help of SPSS 16.0 package program with.01 and.05 levels of significance. The findings of the research reveal that perceived teacher social support, perceived friend social support and human value are in the position of being predictors of the school attachment. Implications of these findings are discussed within the context of literature. © 2018, Hacettepe University. All rights reserved
Radiological study on mandibular ramus asymmetry in young population
Background: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of ramus asymmetries related to age and gender in a young population and the influence of growth spurt on ramus asymmetry.
Materials and methods: The study consisted of 776 panoramic radiographs of individuals aged 9 to 21 years (335 males and 441 females). Individuals were divided into two groups with respect of linear growth spurt as age 12 in females and age 14 in males. The first group consisted of females aged between 9 and 11 and males between 9 and 13. The second group consisted of females aged between 12 and 21 and males between 14 and 21. Bilateral ramus heights on each radiograph were measured. A panoramic software programme was used to measure the ramus heights. Quantitative data was tested by Student’s t test. Qualitative data was tested by χ2 test. The intraclass correlation coefficient was calculated for the magnitude error of the measurement.
Results: The mean of ramus asymmetry was found to be 2.90% ± 2.58%. Significant differences between the right and left ramus height ratios were observed (p < 0.01). There was a high prevalence (10.8%) of ramus asymmetry, which did not correlate with the age and gender of the patients.
Conclusions: This study revealed a high prevalence of ramus asymmetry in 9–21- -year-old population. Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that ramus asymmetry should be carefully evaluated in all ages for the potential relation with temporomandibular dysfunctions and also for orthodontic anomalies
Enzyme activities and growth promotion of spinach by indole-3-acetic acid-producing rhizobacteria
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of twelve plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR; Bacillus
mycoides FD07, B. sphaericus RC12, B. pumilus RC19, B. cereus RC18, Variovorax paradoxus RC21, Paenibacillus
polymyxa RC35, Pseudomonas putida RC06, B. megaterium RC07, B. megaterium M-3, B. licheniformis RC08,
B. subtilis RC11, and B. subtilis OSU-142) used as biofertilisers, on various enzyme activities [glucose-6-phosphate
dehydrogenase (G6PD); 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD); glutathione reductase (GR); and glutathione
S-transferase (GST)] and on seedling growth in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.). Enhanced plant growth could result
from rhizobacterial production of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). The highest IAA-producing rhizobacteria (RC35 and
RC06) produced the highest root and shoot weights. PGPR improved N and P nutrition in spinach, and therefore
stimulated plant growth and key enzyme activities. The responses to inoculation, compared to uninoculated control
plants, were: –1.9% to +36.4% for shoot fresh weights (FWs), –5.5% to +30.1% for root FWs, –3.5% to +29.8% for
shoot dry weights (DWs), –3.8% to +38.5% for root DWs, and –5.9% to +30.1% for leaf areas. Plant growth responses
were variable and dependent on the inoculant strain used, as well as on the enzyme activity and growth parameter
being evaluated. Close correlations between plant shoot growth, PGPR inoculation, and G6PD (r = 0.28*), 6PGD (r
= 0.55**), GR (r = 0.73**), and GST (r = 0. 64**) enzyme activities in spinach have been demonstrated
High-sensitivity noncontact atomic force microscope/scanning tunneling microscope (nc AFM/STM) operating at subangstrom oscillation amplitudes for atomic resolution imaging and force spectroscopy
Cataloged from PDF version of article. We describe a new, highly sensitive noncontact atomic force microscope/scanning tunneling microscope (STM) operating in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) with subangstrom oscillation amplitudes for atomic resolution imaging and force-distance spectroscopy. A novel fiber interferometer with similar to4x10(-4) A/rootHz noise level is employed to detect cantilever displacements. Subangstrom oscillation amplitude is applied to the lever at a frequency well below the resonance and changes in the oscillation amplitude due to tip-sample force interactions are measured with a lock-in amplifier. Quantitative force gradient images can be obtained simultaneously with the STM topography. Employment of subangstrom oscillation amplitudes lets us perform force-distance measurements, which reveal very short-range force interactions, consistent with the theory. Performance of the microscope is demonstrated with quantitative atomic resolution images of Si(111)(7x7) and force-distance curves showing short interaction range, all obtained with <0.25 Angstrom lever oscillation amplitude. Our technique is not limited to UHV only and operation under liquids and air is feasible. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics
Collective modes in flux line liquids
We study the collective modes of flux line liquids such as occur in the type-II superconductors of recent interest composed of two-dimensional layered structures. Starting from the vortex-vortex interaction and employing the dielectric formalism within the random-phase approximation, we find propagating sound modes in the long-wavelength limit
Direct measurement of molecular stiffness and damping in confined water layers
We present {\em direct} and {\em linear} measurements of the normal stiffness
and damping of a confined, few molecule thick water layer. The measurements
were obtained by use of a small amplitude (0.36 ), off-resonance
Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) technique. We measured stiffness and damping
oscillations revealing up to 7 layers separated by 2.56 0.20
. Relaxation times could also be calculated and were found to
indicate a significant slow-down of the dynamics of the system as the confining
separation was reduced. We found that the dynamics of the system is determined
not only by the interfacial pressure, but more significantly by solvation
effects which depend on the exact separation of tip and surface. Thus `
solidification\rq seems to not be merely a result of pressure and confinement,
but depends strongly on how commensurate the confining cavity is with the
molecule size. We were able to model the results by starting from the simple
assumption that the relaxation time depends linearly on the film stiffness.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, will be submitted to PR

Immunodepletion in xenotransplantation
Xenograft transplantation is perhaps the most immunologically difficult problem in transplantation today. An overwhelming hyperacute rejection reaction (HAR) occurs within minutes of organ implantation. Preformed antibodies are thought to initiate this process. We used a pig-to-dog renal xenograft transplant model and investigated methods of decreasing the severity of hyperacute rejection. Female pigs weighing 15-20 kg were used as donors. Recipients were mongrel dogs weighing 15-25 kg. Experimental dogs were all given a number of treatments of IgG depletion using an antibody removal system (Dupont-Excorim). This machine immunoadsorbs plasma against a column containing immobilized staphylococcal protein A, which is known to bind the IgG Fc receptor. An 84% reduction in the IgG levels and a 71% reduction in IgM levels was achieved. Postoperative assessment was made of urine output, time to onset of HAR, and histopathological examination of the rejected kidneys. Although cross-matches between donor lymphocytes and recipient sera remained strongly positive in the treated dogs, there was a two- to fourfold reduction in the titers. The time to onset of HAR was prolonged in the experimental group, and the urine output was increased slightly. The histopathologic changes in the experimental group generally showed signs of HAR, but of less intensity than in the nonimmunodepleted control group. © 1990 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted
