Comparison of finite-difference schemes for analysis of shells of revolution

    Get PDF
Several finite difference schemes are applied to the stress and free vibration analysis of homogeneous isotropic and layered orthotropic shells of revolution. The study is based on a form of the Sanders-Budiansky first-approximation linear shell theory modified such that the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia are included. A Fourier approach is used in which all the shell stress resultants and displacements are expanded in a Fourier series in the circumferential direction, and the governing equations reduce to ordinary differential equations in the meridional direction. While primary attention is given to finite difference schemes used in conjunction with first order differential equation formulation, comparison is made with finite difference schemes used with other formulations. These finite difference discretization models are compared with respect to simplicity of application, convergence characteristics, and computational efficiency. Numerical studies are presented for the effects of variations in shell geometry and lamination parameters on the accuracy and convergence of the solutions obtained by the different finite difference schemes. On the basis of the present study it is shown that the mixed finite difference scheme based on the first order differential equation formulation and two interlacing grids for the different fundamental unknowns combines a number of advantages over other finite difference schemes previously reported in the literature

Development of a Laser Attenuation Measurement System for Quantification of Suspended Particles

    Get PDF
The number density of suspended particles can be quantified by using laser attenuation method. There are two types of suspended particles: solid particles and liquid droplets. Laser attenuation is a phenomenon where a portion of laser beam is reflected by the lenses and absorbed by the particles introduced in its path and the remainder portion of the beam is transmitted to the receiver. Currently, there are many measurement systems using the application laser for the quantification of suspended particles. Those systems are limited for certain settings and experiments only. The objective of this project is to develop a measurement system for the quantification of number density of the suspended particles by using laser attenuation method which incorporating the features of high flexibility, movability, reliability, stability, safety and lightness. The scope of study for this project includes research on the principle of laser and laser attenuation, design of the measurement system, selection of the components and finally experiments to test its functionality. Initially, there are four sketches made by using AutoCAD 2006. Then, only two sketches are selected for the design stage and the final design of measurement system is chosen by considering how well the designs meet the requirements of flexibility, stability, movability, safety and lightness. The fabrication of this system involves the milling, lathing, drilling and assembly processes. Three experiments are conducted throughout the project period. From the result of experiments, this measurement system has shown its functionality as expected to quantify the number density of suspended particles. Finally, this system is now ready for the measurement in various experiments dealing with the quantification of suspended particles

The research objectives were to characterize morphometric and genetic distance between populations of Indonesian local goats. The morphological discriminant and canonical analysis were carried out to estimate the phylogenic relationship and determine the discriminant variable between Benggala goats (n= 96), Marica (n= 60), Jawarandu (n= 94), (Kacang (n= 217), Muara (n= 30) and Samosir (n= 42). Discriminant analysis used to clasify body weight and body measurements. In the analysis of variance showed that body weight and body measurement (body length, height at withers, thorax width, thorax height, hert girth, skull width and height, tail length and width, ear length and width) of Muara goats was higher (P<0.05) compared to the other groups, and the lowest was in Marica goats. The smallest genetic distance was between Marica and Samosir (11.207) and the highest were between Muara and Benggala (255.110). The highest similarity between individual within population was found in Kacang (99.28%) and the lowest in Samosir (82.50%). The canonical analysis showed high correlation on canon circumference, body weight, skull width, skull height, and tail width variables so these six variables can be used as distinguishing variables among population. The result from Mahalonobis distance for phenogram tree and canonical analysis showed that six populations of Indonesian local goats were divided into six breed of goats: the first was Muara, the second was Jawarandu, the third was Kacang, the fourth was Benggala, the fifth was Samosir and the sixth was Marica goats. The diversity of body size and body weight of goats was observed quite large, so the chances of increasing productivity could be made through selection and mating programs

Prejudice in the pub: How alcohol and ideology loosen the tongue.

    Get PDF
This study (N = 124) tested the main and interactive effects of alcohol consumption, egalitarianism, and right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) in relation to prejudice suppression in the natural environment of a British Public House (pub). Employing a quasi-experimental between-subjects design, participants who had consumed alcohol were worse at suppressing their prejudice than participants with no alcohol consumption. Further, the more participants endorsed egalitarian values, the more they were able to suppress their prejudice. This tendency was resistant to the effects of alcohol. By contrast, the stronger participants held RWA beliefs, the less they were able to suppress their prejudice. In addition, this tendency was accentuated by alcohol consumption. Results are discussed in terms of theoretical and practical implications

Clinical phenotypes and biologic treatment use in juvenile dermatomyositis-associated calcinosis

Abstract Background Few risk factors have been identified for the development of calcinosis among patients with Juvenile Dermatomyositis, and currently no clinical phenotype has been associated with its development. We analyzed a large database of patients to further elucidate any relationships among patients with and without calcinosis. Method The CARRA legacy registry recruited pediatric rheumatology patients from 55 centers across North America from 2010 through 2014, including over 650 subjects with Juvenile Dermatomyositis. We compared the demographic characteristics, clinical disease features and treatment histories of those with and without calcinosis using univariate and multivariate logistic regression. Results Of the 631 patients included in the analysis, 84 (13%) had a current or prior history of calcinosis. These patients were statistically more likely to have longer durations of disease prior to diagnosis and treatment, have lipodystrophy and joint contractures, and to have received intravenous immune globulin or rituximab as treatments. Conclusions Calcinosis is found more often in patients with prolonged active disease, severe disease, and certain clinical features such as lipodystrophy and joint contractures. When these factors are combined with other known associations and predictors, groups of at-risk patients can be more effectively identified, treated and studied to improve overall outcomes

Bubbles in the Heart: A Case of Venous Air Thromboembolism

AbstractIntroductionVenous air embolism (VAE) due to central venous catheter (CVC) placement is a rare but preventable complication which is potentially fatal. We describe a case highlighting unique patient characteristics which increase the risk of developing VAE.Case descriptionA sixty-year-old gentleman was admitted to the hospital with dyspnea and altered mental status. His comorbidities include cancer of the neck and tongue, currently in remission, and schizophrenia. On presentation, he was found to be in acute respiratory failure, due to pneumonia, and required mechanical ventilation. Following extubation, his CVC was removed from the right internal jugular vein. While ambulating around the unit, he experienced a coughing fit and dizziness. He rapidly developed cardiopulmonary collapse requiring re-intubation and vasopressor support. Chest x-ray demonstrated a radiolucent column along the lateral aspect of the right neck. Due to concern for VAE, an echocardiogram was performed, revealing multiple air-bubbles in the right and left chambers of the heart.DiscussionOur patient was predisposed to developing VAE due to the extensive radiation induced skin changes, from his cancer treatment, on the neck and upper thorax. This resulted in loss of underlying subcutaneous tissue and decreased skin pliability. He had a large, open puncture wound at the catheter site on his neck, probably resulting in air entry. Anxiety and agitation, due to schizophrenia, made it difficult to maintain our patient in a supine or Trendelenburg position following CVC removal. This case highlights the importance of recognizing patient factors that may increase the risk of VAE

A growing body of research recognizes the occurrence and validity of personality pathology during adolescence as well as its relevance as a developmental precursor of adult personality pathology. The present study recognizes the need for a comprehensive and concise instrument to assess the dimensions of personality pathology in adolescents. Therefore, the psychometric qualities of an abbreviated version of the Dimensional Assessment of Personality Pathology - Basic Questionnaire for Adolescents (DAPP-BQ-A), which has been denoted as the DAPP - Short Form for Adolescents (DAPP-SF-A), were examined. The factorial structure, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, discriminative validity, and classification accuracy of the DAPP-SF-A scales were examined in three samples: 1596 non-referred adolescents; 166 adolescents referred to inpatient and outpatient mental health services; and 58 referred and general population adolescents.Despite a reduction in the number of items by 50% (from 290 to 144 items), the promising psychometric qualities established for the DAPP-BQ-A were replicated for the DAPP-SF-A.The results of this study are promising regarding the qualities of the DAPP-SF-A and its utility in both clinical and research settings. In addition, the equivalence of the instruments for adolescents and (young) adults enables the investigation of developmental trajectories across different life stages

Ble Observer Device Menggunakan Raspberry Pi 3 untuk Menentukan Lokasi Ble Broadcaster

    Get PDF
