Rolling contact fatigue life of chromium ion plated 440C bearing steel
Rolling contact fatigue (RCF) test specimens of heat treated 440C bearing steel were chromium ion plated in thicknesses from 0.1 to 8.0 micron and tested in RCF tester using 700 ksi maximum Hertzian stress. Heavy coatings, greater than about 5 micron in thickness, peeled off or spalled readily, whereas thin coatings, less than 3 micron thick, were tenacious and did not come off. Furthermore, significant improvement in RCF life was obtained with thin chromium ion plated test specimens. The average increase in B10 life was 75% compared with unplated 440C. These preliminary results indicate that ion plating is a promising way to improve bearing life
Chiral Vortons and Cosmological Constraints on Particle Physics
We investigate the cosmological consequences of particle physics theories
that admit stable loops of current-carrying string - vortons. In particular, we
consider chiral theories where a single fermion zero mode is excited in the
string core, such as those arising in supersymmetric theories with a D-term.
The resulting vortons formed in such theories are expected to be more stable
than their non-chiral cousins. General symmetry breaking schemes are considered
in which strings formed at one symmetry breaking scale become current-carrying
at a subsequent phase transition. The vorton abundance is estimated and
constraints placed on the underlying particle physics theories from
cosmological observations. Our constraints on the chiral theory are
considerably more stringent than the previous estimates for more general

Uniaxial-stress induced phase transitions in [001]c-poled 0.955Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.045PbTiO3
First-order, rhombohedral to orthorhombic, stress-induced phase transitions
have been evidenced by bulk charge-stress measurements and X-ray diffraction
derived lattice strain measurements in [001]c-poled PZN-4.5PT. The transitions
are induced by uniaxial, compressive loads applied either along or
perpendicular to the poling direction. In each case, they occur via rotation of
the polar vector in the Cm monoclinic plane and the induced lattice strain is
hysteretic yet reversible. Although no depoling is observed in the transverse
mode, net depolarization is observed under longitudinal stress which is
important for the use of [001]c-poled PZN-PT and PMN-PT single crystals in

Controlled Natural Language Generation from a Multilingual FrameNet-based Grammar
This paper presents a currently bilingual but potentially multilingual
FrameNet-based grammar library implemented in Grammatical Framework. The
contribution of this paper is two-fold. First, it offers a methodological
approach to automatically generate the grammar based on semantico-syntactic
valence patterns extracted from FrameNet-annotated corpora. Second, it provides
a proof of concept for two use cases illustrating how the acquired multilingual
grammar can be exploited in different CNL applications in the domains of arts
and tourism
Inverting Ray-Knight identity
We provide a short proof of the Ray-Knight second generalized Theorem, using
a martingale which can be seen (on the positive quadrant) as the Radon-Nikodym
derivative of the reversed vertex-reinforced jump process measure with respect
to the Markov jump process with the same conductances. Next we show that a
variant of this process provides an inversion of that Ray-Knight identity. We
give a similar result for the Ray-Knight first generalized Theorem.Comment: 18 page
What makes a 'good group'? Exploring the characteristics and performance of undergraduate student groups
Group work forms the foundation for much of student learning within higher education, and has many educational, social and professional benefits. This study aimed to explore the determinants of success or failure for undergraduate student teams and to define a ‘good group’ through considering three aspects of group success: the task, the individuals, and the team. We employed a mixed methodology, combining demographic data with qualitative observations and task and peer evaluation scores. We determined associations between group dynamic and behaviour, demographic composition, member personalities and attitudes towards one another, and task success. We also employed a cluster analysis to create a model outlining the attributes of a good small group learning team in veterinary education. This model highlights that student groups differ in measures of their effectiveness as teams, independent of their task performance. On the basis of this, we suggest that groups who achieve high marks in tasks cannot be assumed to have acquired team working skills, and therefore if these are important as a learning outcome, they must be assessed directly alongside the task output
Dynamical correlation functions for an impenetrable Bose gas with Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions
We study the time and temperature dependent correlation functions for an
impenetrable Bose gas with Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions . We derive the Fredholm
determinant formulae for the correlation functions, by means of the Bethe
Ansatz. For the special case , we express correlation functions with
Neumann boundary conditions , in terms of solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations
which were introduced in \cite{kojima:Sl} as a generalization of the nonlinear
Schr\"odinger equations. We generalize the Fredholm minor determinant formulae
of ground state correlation functions in \cite{kojima:K}, to the Fredholm determinant formulae for the time
and temperature dependent correlation functions

A Killing tensor for higher dimensional Kerr-AdS black holes with NUT charge
In this paper, we study the recently discovered family of higher dimensional
Kerr-AdS black holes with an extra NUT-like parameter. We show that the inverse
metric is additively separable after multiplication by a simple function. This
allows us to separate the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, showing that geodesic
motion is integrable on this background. The separation of the Hamilton-Jacobi
equation is intimately linked to the existence of an irreducible Killing
tensor, which provides an extra constant of motion. We also demonstrate that
