Scheduling Jobs in Flowshops with the Introduction of Additional Machines in the Future

with the possibility of evolving into hybrid flowshops in the future, is investigated in\ud
this paper. As this research is guided by a real problem in industry, the flowshop\ud
considered has considerable flexibility, which stimulated the development of an\ud
innovative methodology for this research. Each stage of the flowshop currently has\ud
one or several identical machines. However, the manufacturing company is planning\ud
to introduce additional machines with different capabilities in different stages in the\ud
near future. Thus, the algorithm proposed and developed for the problem is not only\ud
capable of solving the current flow line configuration but also the potential new\ud
configurations that may result in the future. A meta-heuristic search algorithm based\ud
on Tabu search is developed to solve this NP-hard, industry-guided problem. Six\ud
different initial solution finding mechanisms are proposed. A carefully planned\ud
nested split-plot design is performed to test the significance of different factors and\ud
their impact on the performance of the different algorithms. To the best of our\ud
knowledge, this research is the first of its kind that attempts to solve an industry-guided\ud
problem with the concern for future developments
Comet Machholz (C/2004 Q2): morphological structures in the inner coma and rotation parameters
Extensive observations of comet C/2004 Q2 (Machholz) were carried out between
August 2004 and May 2005. The images obtained were used to investigate the
comet's inner coma features at resolutions between 350 and 1500 km/pixel. A
photometric analysis of the dust outflowing from the comet's nucleus and the
study of the motion of the morphological structures in the inner coma indicated
that the rotation period of the nucleus was most likely around 0.74 days. A
thorough investigation of the inner coma morphology allowed us to observe two
main active sources on the comet's nucleus, at a latitude of +85{\deg} \pm
5{\deg} and +45{\deg} \pm 5{\deg}, respectively. Further sources have been
observed, but their activity ran out quite rapidly over time; the most relevant
was at latcom. = 25{\deg} \pm 5{\deg}. Graphic simulations of the geometrical
conditions of observation of the inner coma were compared with the images and
used to determine a pole orientation at RA=95{\deg} \pm 5{\deg}, Dec=+35{\deg}
\pm 5{\deg}. The comet's spin axis was lying nearly on the plane of the sky

Behavioral implications of shortlisting procedures
We consider two-stage “shortlisting procedures” in which the menu of alternatives is first pruned by some process or criterion and then a binary relation is maximized. Given a particular first-stage process, our main result supplies a necessary and sufficient condition for choice data to be consistent with a procedure in the designated class. This result applies to any class of procedures with a certain lattice structure, including the cases of “consideration filters,” “satisficing with salience effects,” and “rational shortlist methods.” The theory avoids background assumptions made for mathematical convenience; in this and other respects following Richter’s classical analysis of preference-maximizing choice in the absence of shortlisting
State-of-the-art in product service-systems
A Product Service-System (PSS) is an integrated combination of products and services.
This western concept embraces a service-led competitive strategy, environmental sustainability,
and the basis to differentiate from competitors who simply offer lower priced products. This
paper aims to report the state-of-the-art of PSS research by presenting a clinical review of
literature currently available on this topic. The literature is classified and the major outcomes
of each study are addressed and analysed. On this basis, this paper defines the PSS concept,
reports on its origin and features, gives examples of applications along with potential benefits
and barriers to adoption, summarises available tools and methodologies, and identifies future
research challenges
How was it for you? Experiences of participatory design in the UK health service
Improving co-design methods implies that we need to understand those methods, paying attention to not only the effect of method choices on design outcomes, but also how methods affect the people involved in co-design. In this article, we explore participants' experiences from a year-long participatory health service design project to develop ‘Better Outpatient Services for Older People’. The project followed a defined method called experience-based design (EBD), which represented the state of the art in participatory service design within the UK National Health Service. A sample of participants in the project took part in semi-structured interviews reflecting on their involvement in and their feelings about the project. Our findings suggest that the EBD method that we employed was successful in establishing positive working relationships among the different groups of stakeholders (staff, patients, carers, advocates and design researchers), although conflicts remained throughout the project. Participants' experiences highlighted issues of wider relevance in such participatory design: cost versus benefit, sense of project momentum, locus of control, and assumptions about how change takes place in a complex environment. We propose tactics for dealing with these issues that inform the future development of techniques in user-centred healthcare design
Interannual variation patterns of total ozone and temperature in observations and model simulations
International audienceWe report results from a multiple linear regression analysis of long-term total ozone observations (1979 to 2002, by TOMS/SBUV), of temperature reanalyses (1958 to 2002, NCEP), and of two chemistry-climate model simulations (1960 to 1999, by ECHAM4.L39(DLR)/CHEM (=E39/C), and MAECHAM4-CHEM). The model runs are transient experiments, where observed sea surface temperatures, increasing source gas concentrations (CO2, CFCs, CH4, N2O, NOx), 11-year solar cycle, volcanic aerosols and the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) are all accounted for. MAECHAM4-CHEM covers the atmosphere from the surface up to 0.01 hPa (?80 km). For a proper representation of middle atmosphere (MA) dynamics, it includes a parametrization for momentum deposition by dissipating gravity wave spectra. E39/C, on the other hand, has its top layer centered at 10 hPa (?30 km). It is targeted on processes near the tropopause, and has more levels in this region. Both models reproduce the observed amplitudes and much of the observed low-latitude patterns of the various modes of interannual variability, MAECHAM4-CHEM somewhat better than E39/C. Total ozone and lower stratospheric temperature show similar patterns. Main contributions to the interannual variations of total ozone and lower stratospheric temperature at 50 hPa come from a linear trend (up to ?30 Dobson Units (DU) per decade, or ?1.5 K/decade), the QBO (up to 25 DU, or 2.5 K peak to peak), the intensity of the polar vortices (up to 50 DU, or 5 K peak to peak), and from tropospheric weather (up to 30 DU, or 3 K peak to peak). Smaller variations are related to the 11-year solar cycle (generally less than 25 DU, or 2.5 K), and to ENSO (up to 15 DU, or 1.5 K). Volcanic eruptions have resulted in sporadic changes (up to ?40 DU, or +3 K). Most stratospheric variations are connected to the troposphere, both in observations and simulations. At low latitudes, patterns are zonally symmetric. At higher latitudes, however, strong, zonally non-symmetric signals are found close to the Aleutian Islands or south of Australia. Such asymmetric features appear in the model runs as well, but often at different longitudes than in the observations. The results point to a key role of the zonally asymmetric Aleutian (or Australian) stratospheric anti-cyclones for interannual variations at high- latitudes, and for coupling between polar vortex strength, QBO, 11-year solar cycle and ENSO
Spin states of asteroids in the Eos collisional family
Eos family was created during a catastrophic impact about 1.3 Gyr ago.
Rotation states of individual family members contain information about the
history of the whole population. We aim to increase the number of asteroid
shape models and rotation states within the Eos collision family, as well as to
revise previously published shape models from the literature. Such results can
be used to constrain theoretical collisional and evolution models of the
family, or to estimate other physical parameters by a thermophysical modeling
of the thermal infrared data. We use all available disk-integrated optical data
(i.e., classical dense-in-time photometry obtained from public databases and
through a large collaboration network as well as sparse-in-time individual
measurements from a few sky surveys) as input for the convex inversion method,
and derive 3D shape models of asteroids together with their rotation periods
and orientations of rotation axes. We present updated shape models for 15
asteroids and new shape model determinations for 16 asteroids. Together with
the already published models from the publicly available DAMIT database, we
compiled a sample of 56 Eos family members with known shape models that we used
in our analysis of physical properties within the family. Rotation states of
asteroids smaller than ~20 km are heavily influenced by the YORP effect, whilst
the large objects more or less retained their rotation state properties since
the family creation. Moreover, we also present a shape model and bulk density
of asteroid (423) Diotima, an interloper in the Eos family, based on the
disk-resolved data obtained by the Near InfraRed Camera (Nirc2) mounted on the

Young stars and non-stellar emission in the aligned radio galaxy 3C 256
We present ground-based images of the z=1.824 radio galaxy 3C 256 in the
standard BVRIJHK filters and an interference filter centered at 8800A, a Hubble
Space Telescope image in a filter dominated by Ly-alpha emission (F336W), and
spectra covering rest-frame wavelengths from Ly-alpha to [O III] 5007. Together
with published polarimetry observations, we use these to decompose the overall
spectral energy distribution into nebular continuum emission, scattered quasar
light, and stellar emission. The nebular continuum and scattered light together
comprise half (one third) of the V-band (K-band) light within a 4-arcsec
aperture, and are responsible for the strong alignment between the
optical/near-infrared light and the radio emission. The stellar emission is
dominated by a population estimated to be 100-200 Myr old (assuming a Salpeter
IMF), and formed in a short burst with a peak star formation rate of 1-4x10^3
Msun/yr. The total stellar mass is estimated to be no more than 2x10^{11} Msun,
which is far less than other luminous radio galaxies at similar redshifts, and
suggests that 3C 256 will undergo further star formation or mergers.Comment: 35 pages including 10 figures; to appear in Nov 10 Ap
State dependent choice
We propose a theory of choices that are influenced by the psychological state of the agent. The central hypothesis is that the psychological state controls the urgency of the attributes sought by the decision maker in the available alternatives. While state dependent choice is less restricted than rational choice, our model does have empirical content, expressed by simple "revealed preference" type of constraints on observable choice data. We demonstrate the applicability of simple versions of the framework to economic contexts. We show in particular that it can explain widely researched anomalies in the labour supply of taxi drivers
