    Pharmacognostical, phytochemical and HPTLC evaluation of Erandamuladi Kwatha Churna - A polyherbal formulation for pharmaceutical standardization

    Introduction: Erandamuladi Kwatha is mentioned in Ayurveda classics as a therapeutic formulation of Basti mainly to treat Trika-prishta Shoola (low back ache). The most common disorder which affects the movement of leg particularly in the productive period of life is low backache. Erandamuladi Kwatha used in Basti contains 15 drugs in which most of the drugs are having Ushna Veerya and are Vatakaphahara in nature. Materials and Methods: Yavakuta Choorna of Erandamuladi Kwatha was evaluated for their pharmacognostic and pharmaceutical analysis. Results and Discussion: Pharmacognostic study showed the presence of contents such as starch grains of Kantakari, rosette crystal of Rasna, pollen grain of Atibala etc. Physico-chemical analysis showed that the loss on drying 7.74%, Ash value 6.78%, Water soluble extract 20.12%, Alcohol soluble extract 4.3%, pH 7.2. Conclusion: From the study, data developed can be espoused for laying down the standards of Erandamuladi Kwatha

    Deep Learning Assisted Linear Sampling Method for the Reconstruction of Perfect Electric Conductors

    In this study, a linear approach, linear sampling method (LSM) is used to reconstruct the shape of perfectly electric conductors (PEC) with the help of deep learning as a post-processing technique. In microwave imaging, the LSM is a simple and reliable linear inversion technique for determining the morphological features of unknown objects under investigation. However, the output of this method depends on the frequency of operation, the choice of regularization parameter,and it is unable to produce satisfactory results for objects with complex shapes. To overcome this drawback, a deep learning approach is used in this work, which can produce a better output in terms of accuracy, resolution. Here, the rough estimate of the PEC scatterer obtained using LSM is used to train the U-Net based convolutional neural network, which maps this output with the corresponding ground truth profiles. The proposed hybrid model is validated using several examples of synthetic and experimental data

    Pippalyadi Yoga is Churna Kalpana described by Acharya Chakrapani in Vandhyatva (infertility). Ovulatory dysfunction is the prime cause of Infertility among the world, Pippalyadi Yoga is useful in patients especially having Anovulation which is known as Abeejatva in Ayurveda. So a new pharmaceutical preparation Pippalyadi Yoga in the form of Churna (powder) was tried to standardize which is economical in terms of time and machinery usage. Pharmacognostical and phyto-chemical observations revealed the specific characters of all active constituents used in the preparation. The present work was carried out to standardize the finished product of Pippalyadi Yoga to confirm its identity, quality and purity. The presence of stone cells, oil globules, olio resin cells, parenchymatous cells, oval & beaker shaped starch grains, pollen grains were the characteristic features observed in the microscopy of the prepared drug. Phyto-chemical analysis showed Loss on drying 10.07 % w/w, ash value 6.55 %w/w, water soluble extract 14 % w/w, methanol soluble 13.40 % w/w, particle consistency above 60 mesh 4.10 % w/w, between 60-85 mesh 9.20 % w/w, between 85-120 mesh 13.30 % w/w & below 120 mesh 73.37 % w/w & pH 5.0. HPTLC of Pippalyadi Yoga is the preliminary quantitative analysis which shows 8 prominent spots at Rf. 0.09, 0.61, 0.67, 0.74, 0.80, 0.86, 0.91, 1.00 in UV 254 nm and 7 prominent spots at Rf. 0.06, 0.17, 0.63, 0.67, 0.75, 0.82, 0.88 in UV 366 nm. Pippalyadi Yoga, a polyherbal formulation of 4 ingredients was prepared and HPTLC finger print profile was developed and it can be considered pharmacopial standard of Pippalyadi Yoga

    Experimental and Finite Element Study of Residual Thermal Stresses in Veneered Y-TZP Structures

    The main complications of zirconia-based laminated systems are chipping and delamination of veneering porcelain, which has been found to be directly associated with the development of residual thermal stresses in the porcelain layer. This study investigates the effects of cooling rate and specimen geometry on the residual stress states in porcelain-veneered zirconia structures. Bilayers of three different shapes (bars, semi-cylindrical shells, and arch-cubic structures) with 1.5 mm and 0.7 mm thickness of dentin porcelain and zirconia framework, respectively, were subjected to two cooling protocols: slow cooling (SC) at 32 °C/min and extremely-slow cooling (XSC) at 2 °C/min. The residual thermal stresses were determined using the Vickers indentation method and validated by finite element analysis. The residual stress profiles were similar among geometries in the same cooling protocol. XSC groups presented significantly higher tensile stresses (p = 0.000), especially for curved interfaces. XSC is a time-consuming process that showed no beneficial effect regarding residual stresses compared to the manufacturer recommended slow cooling rate

    Baladi Churna described by Acharya Bhavprkash in Vandhyatva (infertility). Endometrium dysfunction is the prime cause of Infertility among the world Baladi Churna is useful in patients especially having implantation failure due to defective endometrium, which is known as Kshetra deformity in Ayurveda. So a new pharmaceutical preparation Baladi churna was tried to standardize which is economical in terms of time and machinery usage. The present work was carried out to standardize the finished product of to confirm Baladi Churna entity, quality and purity. The presence of trichomes, spiral vessels, pollen grains were the characteristic features observed in the microscopy of the prepared drug. Phyto-chemical analysis showed Loss on drying 8.24% w/w, ash value 9 %w/w, water soluble extract 46.3 % w/w and pH 6.5. HPTLC of Baladi Churna is the preliminary quantitative analysis which shows 11 prominent spots in UV 254 nm and 10 prominent spots 366 nm. Baladi Churna, a polyherbal formulation of 6 ingredients was prepared and HPTLC finger print profile was developed and it can be considered pharmacopial standard of Baladi Churna

    Developing a traumatic brain injury registry: lessons learned from difficulties

    Aim: The aim of present article is to share our experiences and lessons learned from a pilot study which was conducted to collect data to serve as a model in establishing a multi-center registry on traumatic brain injury patients.Methods: The present study was conducted from December 2013 to June 2014 in the Department of Neurosurgery and Department of Accident and Emergency Medicine. All patients with the diagnosis of traumatic brain injury (as per the criteria laid by International Classification of Disease injury codes ICD 10) were enrolled in the study. Variables were identified as per the international norms and the data points were selected which included demographic details, pre-hospital characteristics, clinical details in emergency room, injury details, course during hospital stay, treatment and disposition. The data were categorized into master data, data related to pre-hospital events including pre-hospital care, data related to emergency room care offered in the emergency department, data related to hospital stay and patient course, outcome and follow up.Results: A total of 231 patients were admitted with the diagnosis of traumatic brain injury. There were 79.1% male and 20.5% female patients. Mean age was 37.19 years (SD±17.02 years, range 4-87 years). Mean hospital stay was 3.66 days (SD±4.46 days, range-1-21 days). Data were collected daily for all the admitted patients on previous day fulfilling the inclusion criteria. The Proforma was easy to comprehend and it was easy to fill.Conclusion: We found that a well-designed Proforma based under supervision data collection in a relatively low volume trauma center.     Livelihood responses to Lantana camara invasion and biodiversity change in southern India: application of an asset function framework

    Natural resources play key roles as assets in the livelihoods of rural communities. However, the benefits of these assets in livelihoods are frequently conceived narrowly as income generating or vulnerability reducing. We contend that they have other important roles to play in poverty reduction and livelihood change. In this paper we use a case study of two ethnic communities in a village in southern India to investigate livelihood responses to change in forest biodiversity through an examination of changes in attributes of natural assets resulting from the invasion of Lantana camara and wider socio-economic change. The invasion of forest by Lantana has contributed to changes in the attributes and functions of four key natural assets: forest grazing, bamboo for basketry, Phoenix loureie for brooms, and wild yams. We observe that differences in households’ and individuals’ ability to substitute important functions of lost or declining assets affect their ability to adapt to changes in resource availability and attributes. Analysing changes in asset attributes for different user groups allows the social effects of environmental change to be disaggregated
