The commodity systems of four indigenous leafy vegetables in Senegal
Increasing the production of traditional leafy vegetables that are well adapted to the agro-ecology of Senegal, easy to grow and requiring low inputs, could greatly help to solve the poverty and malnutrition problems in Senegal. However, leafy vegetables are often overlooked by the scientific community. The species of leafy vegetables dealt with in this paper are roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp), amaranths (Amaranthus L. spp.) and Moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam). To increase production of traditional leafy vegetables, access to good quality seeds is necessary. Two plantcollecting missions were undertaken throughout Senegal by a multidisciplinary research team. Experimentation on Hibiscus regeneration and characterisation was conducted at ISRA-CDH research station. Sixty-four accessions were collected among the four species. Forty-eight accessions of roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) were characterised. The level of dissimilarity (63%) within the accessions of roselle confirmed the high degree of intra-species variability. The Richness Index determined for the Diaobe and Matam markets indicated a high degree of genetic diversity of roselle. These are used to select three new lines according to farmers’ preference criteria.In addition, socio-economic surveys were conducted in two pilot villages. It was found that planting dates for leafy vegetables varied greatly, depending on species, locality and season. Sowing was mainly done broadcast. Organic fertilisers were commonly applied. Eighty per cent (80%) of the farmers applied an NPK formulation and small quantities of urea. Traditional irrigation methods are often used in the growing of traditional leafy vegetables. The seeds used by farmers were a mixture of varieties. Farmers identified four types of each of roselle, amaranth and cowpea, but could not differentiate any variety for Moringa. Local markets constitute the main roselle seed supply source. Few farmers have developed traditional methods of seed conservation. Selling of seed is not a common activity in rural areas. Generally, farmers exchange gratuitously theirs seeds. Leaves are commonly sold at the field, in the village, in the nearest city and weekly at local markets called ’Louma‘. Average annual income generated by leaves varies from 41 to 500 USD. Leafy vegetables are used as food and for medicinal purposes. Bending strain-tunable magnetic anisotropy in Co2FeAl Heusler thin film on Kapton
Bending effect on the magnetic anisotropy in 20 nm CoFeAl Heusler thin
film grown on Kapton\textregistered{} has been studied by ferromagnetic
resonance and glued on curved sample carrier with various radii. The results
reported in this letter show that the magnetic anisotropy is drastically
changed in this system by bending the thin films. This effect is attributed to
the interfacial strain transmission from the substrate to the film and to the
magnetoelastic behavior of the CoFeAl film. Moreover two approaches to
determine the in-plane magnetostriction coefficient of the film, leading to a

This report synthesizes findings from a number of participatory action research (PAR) projects conducted as part of the Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (CCAA) program, for example: local informal institutions play a key role in enabling and/or constraining adaptation; coordination among and between institutions is essential; a well-coordinated institutional framework should take into account the three main chains of connection (horizontal coordination at the national level; horizontal coordination at the local level; and vertical coordination between national and local institutions)
Biological nitrogen fixation in Crotalaria species estimated using the 15N isotope dilution method
A greenhouse experiment was conducted to measure nitrogen fixation in three Crotalaria species : C. ochroleuca, C. perrottetii and C. retusa growing in Senegal by using 15N direct isotope dilution technique. Two non-fixing plants, Senna obtusifolia and Senna occidentalis served as reference plants. The amount of nitrogen fixed two months after planting was obtained using the average of the two reference plants. The atom % 15N excess in the Crotalaria species was significantly lower than that of the reference plants, indicating that significant nitrogen fixation occurred in the three plants. Significant differences were observed between the Crotalaria species; C. ochroleuca yielded more dry matter weight and total nitrogen than did C. perrottetti and C. retusa. The % nitrogen derived from atmosphere (%Ndfa) in leaves and stems was also higher in C. ochroleuca. There was no significant difference in %Ndfa in the whole plant between the three Crotalaria species (47% to 53%). In contrast, interspecific variability was observed based on the %Ndfa. C. ochroleuca significantly exhibited the higher amount of total nitrogen fixed, equivalent to 83 kg of nitrogen fixed per hectare. Based on these data, it was concluded that C. ochroleuca could be used in multiple cropping systems in Senegal for making more nitrogen available to other plants.

The Geant4-DNA project
The Geant4-DNA project proposes to develop an open-source simulation software
based and fully included in the general-purpose Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation
toolkit. The main objective of this software is to simulate biological damages
induced by ionising radiation at the cellular and sub-cellular scale. This
project was originally initiated by the European Space Agency for the
prediction of deleterious effects of radiation that may affect astronauts
during future long duration space exploration missions. In this paper, the
Geant4-DNA collaboration presents an overview of the whole ongoing project,
including its most recent developments already available in the last Geant4
public release (9.3 BETA), as well as an illustration example simulating the
direct irradiation of a chromatin fibre. Expected extensions involving several
research domains, such as particle physics, chemistry and cellular and
molecular biology, within a fully interdiciplinary activity of the Geant4

Folk taxonomy and traditional management of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) diversity in southern and central Benin
Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is an important food security crop for poor rural communities, particularly in Africa. At household level, cassava landraces used for cultivation are mainly selected based on farmers' interests, leading to very particular diversity evolution over generations. The structure, composition and factors influencing cassava diversity at that level is not well monitored and under documented. This study aimed at capturing and analyzing local knowledge on cassava genetic diversity and the key parameters affecting it in Benin, for better and sustainable local cassava genetic resources management. The methodological approach was based on field visits, interview using questionnaire and group discussion with farmers. Data were collected from one hundred and ninety eight (198) respondents and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The majority (82%) of the respondents were male, generally 20 to 80 years old. Positive correlation was found between cassava diversity maintained per household with cultivated area and household size (R2 = 0.162). Farmers used mainly stem and leaves characteristics to identify cassava varieties. Plant materials for next season were mostly selected according to the disease (mainly plant free of viral infection) status, size of the stem and number of nodes. The study revealed existence of a high diversity of cassava at the household level. However, various factors constrained cassava production and threats on cassava diversity were observed. Aggravation de l’anémie et polymorphisme de l’haptoglobine au cours de la drépanocytose au Sénégal
La drépanocytose homozygote s’accompagne d’une augmentation de l’hémoglobine (Hb) plasmatique, susceptible d’exposer les hématies à un stress oxydant. L’haptoglobine présente trois phénotypes majeurs (Hp1-1, Hp 2-1 et Hp 2-2) susceptibles de fixer l’hémoglobine extracellulaire avec une efficacité différente. L’objectif de ce travail est de voir si la connaissance du phénotype d’Hp pouvait constituer un élément prédictifde l’anémie sévère. Pour cela, il a été recruté 68 drépanocytaires homozygotes, âgés de 5 à 31 ans. Pour chaque patient, un témoin de même sexe et de même âge ± 2 ans a été recruté. Le phénotypage de l’Hp a été réalisé par électrophorèse sur gel de polyacrylamide. Les résultats du dosage de l’Hb font ressortir que les taux d’Hb sont significativement différentes chez les patients comparées à celles des témoins (p = 0,001). Lorsque la répartition a été faite en fonction du phénotype d’Hp, une différence statistiquement significative a étéretrouvée entre le phénotype Hp1-1 et le phénotype Hp2-2 (p < 0,001) chez les patients et non chez les témoins. Les résultats de cette étude préliminaire suggéreraient que la connaissance du phénotype d’Hp seraitun facteur prédictif de l’anémie sévère au cours de la drépanocytose.Mots clés : Drépanocytose, anémie, phénotypes d’haptoglobine
Etude de l’activité antioxydante des extraits des feuilles de Vitex doniana (Verbenacea)
L’objectif de la présente étude était d’évaluer l’activité antioxydante des extraits des feuilles de Vitex doniana par spectrophotométrie en utilisant les méthodes de piégeage des radicaux libres 2,2-diphényl-1- picryl-hydrazyle (DPPH•) et acide 2,2’-azino-bis-(3-éthylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonique) (ABTS+•). Une extraction éthanolique des feuilles de Vitex doniana a été effectuée au Soxhlet. L’extrait sec recueilli a été redissout dans de l’eau puis fractionné en utilisant successivement de l’hexane, du dichlorométhane et de l’acétate d’éthyle. Les propriétés antioxydantes de l’extrait éthanolique et celles de ses différentes fractions ont été évaluées aux concentrations de 2,5 ; 10 ; 100 et 200 μg/mL. Les pourcentages d’inhibition (PI) expriment l’effet antioxydant mesuré. L’extrait éthanolique et ses différentes fractions ont présenté une activité de piégeage des deux radicaux libres. Lors des tests d’inhibition de l’absorbance du radical DPPH•, les PI ont varié de (18,15±0,01)% pour la fraction hexanique (2,5 μg/mL) à (92,45±0,01)% pour la fraction d’acétate d’éthyle (100 μg/mL). Avec le radical ABTS+•, les PI ont varié de (52,76±0,05)% pour la fraction hexanique (2,5 μg/mL) à (98,27±0,12)% pour la fraction d’acétate d’éthyle (100 μg/mL). Ainsi, l’extrait éthanolique des feuilles de Vitex doniana et ses différentes fractions possèdent un pouvoir antioxydant significatif.Mots clés : Activité antioxydante, DPPH, ABTS, Vitex doniana
Sustainable development in the mining industry: Towards the development of tools for evaluating socioeconomic impact in the Canadian context
In spite of its economic outputs, the Canadian mining sector has suffered from several setbacks that have compromised its reputation. This has led many of its stakeholders to adopt a shift towards a new paradigm focused on sustainable development. In this review of the literature, we identify the impact that mining activities have had on various social, economic and environmental issues in Canadian society. We also survey the criteria and indicators included in various models that may be used to evaluate the adequacy of the transition of mines towards sustainable development. Finally, the strengths and weaknesses of eight tools that have been applied to the socioeconomic impact of mines are analysed. A clear vision of prospects for promoting sustainable development in Canadian mining emerges from this survey. Our analysis reveals important factors not given adequate consideration in the models used currently to evaluate and suggests opportunities to improve these evaluation tools through identification of more relevant criteria and indicators. The research undertaken should incite stakeholders to develop social and economic impact evaluation tools that are better adapted to the Canadian context
