    Cost of Conservation of Agrobiodiversity

    The cost of conservation of germplasm stored in gene banks i.e., ex-situ collections has been studied in other parts of the world to estimate direct and indirect contributions by various actors involved in conservation. This is the first study of its kind in India done in collaboration with National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, New Delhi. This was part of a sponsored research by Centre for Development Research, Germany. The limitations of this study are also listed so that future research in this regard can be pursued better. One of the costs not included is the cost of sharing data with local communities for enabling them to access germplasm in times of need. This is an important component of conservation and would require translation of gene bank and associated database in local language, making them available through public kiosks. This cost has not been included in any study on the subject so far. Separately, studies are underway to look at the conservation of germplasm under in-situ conditions.

    Deterministic cavity quantum electrodynamics with trapped ions

    We have employed radio-frequency trapping to localize a single 40Ca+-ion in a high-finesse optical cavity. By means of laser Doppler cooling, the position spread of the ion's wavefunction along the cavity axis was reduced to 42 nm, a fraction of the resonance wavelength of ionized calcium (λ = 397 nm). By controlling the position of the ion in the optical field, continuous and completely deterministic coupling of ion and field was realized. The precise three-dimensional location of the ion in the cavity was measured by observing the fluorescent light emitted upon excitation in the cavity field. The single-ion system is ideally suited to implement cavity quantum electrodynamics under cw conditions. To this end we operate the cavity on the D3/2–P1/2 transition of 40Ca+ (λ = 866 nm). Applications include the controlled generation of single-photon pulses with high efficiency and two-ion quantum gates

    Nullity conditions in paracontact geometry

    The paper is a complete study of paracontact metric manifolds for which the Reeb vector field of the underlying contact structure satisfies a nullity condition (the condition \eqref{paranullity} below, for some real numbers Îș~% \tilde\kappa and ÎŒ~\tilde\mu). This class of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, which includes para-Sasakian manifolds, was recently defined in \cite{MOTE}. In this paper we show in fact that there is a kind of duality between those manifolds and contact metric (Îș,ÎŒ)(\kappa,\mu)-spaces. In particular, we prove that, under some natural assumption, any such paracontact metric manifold admits a compatible contact metric (Îș,ÎŒ)(\kappa,\mu)-structure (eventually Sasakian). Moreover, we prove that the nullity condition is invariant under D% \mathcal{D}-homothetic deformations and determines the whole curvature tensor field completely. Finally non-trivial examples in any dimension are presented and the many differences with the contact metric case, due to the non-positive definiteness of the metric, are discussed.Comment: Different.     Saving behaviour and health: A high-dimensional Bayesian analysis of British panel data

    We develop a two-part high-dimensional Bayesian modelling approach to analyse the relationship between saving behaviour and health. In contrast to the existing literature, our approach allows different data-generating processes for the decision to save and the amount saved, and therefore unveils a more detailed picture of the relationship between financial behaviour and health than previous work. We explore different measures of saving, including monthly saving behaviour and the stock of financial assets held. Further, we exploit British panel data, which includes an extensive range of biomarkers. Our second contribution lies in comparing the effects of these objective measures of health with commonly used self-assessed health measures. We find that health is a significant determinant of saving behaviour and financial asset holding, and that biomarker measures have differential impacts on saving behaviour compared to self-reported health measures

    Site amplification in the Kathmandu Valley during the 2015 M7.6 Gorkha, Nepal earthquake

    The 25th April 2015 M7.6 Gorkha earthquake caused significant damage to buildings and infrastructure in both Kathmandu and surrounding areas as well as triggering numerous, large landslides. This resulted in the loss of approximately 8600 lives. In order to learn how the impact of such events can be reduced on communities both in Nepal and elsewhere, the Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (EEFIT) reconnaissance mission was undertaken, aiming to look at damage patterns within the country. Passive, microtremor recordings in severely damaged areas of the Kathmandu Valley, as well as at the main seismic recording station in Kathmandu (USGS station KATNP) are used to determined preliminary shear wave velocity (Vs) profiles for each site. These profiles are converted into spectral acceleration using the input motion of the Gorkha earthquake. The results are limited, but show clear site amplification within the Siddhitol Region. The resulting ground motions exceed the design levels from the Nepalese Building Codes, indicating the need for site-specific hazard analysis and for revision of the building code to address the effect of site amplificatio

    Estimating Small Area Income Deprivation: An Iterative Proportional Fitting Approach

    Small area estimation and in particular the estimation of small area income deprivation has potential value in the development of new or alternative components of multiple deprivation indices. These new approaches enable the development of income distribution threshold based as opposed to benefit count based measures of income deprivation and so enable the alignment of regional and national measures such as the Households Below Average Income with small area measures. This paper briefly reviews a number of approaches to small area estimation before describing in some detail an iterative proportional fitting based spatial microsimulation approach. This approach is then applied to the estimation of small area HBAI rates at the small area level in Wales in 2003-5. The paper discusses the results of this approach, contrasts them with contemporary ‘official’ income deprivation measures for the same areas and describes a range of ways to assess the robustness of the results

    Dilatonic Black Holes in Higher Curvature String Gravity

    We give analytical arguments and demonstrate numerically the existence of black hole solutions of the 4D4D Effective Superstring Action in the presence of Gauss-Bonnet quadratic curvature terms. The solutions possess non-trivial dilaton hair. The hair, however, is of ``secondary" type", in the sense that the dilaton charge is expressed in terms of the black hole mass. Our solutions are not covered by the assumptions of existing proofs of the ``no-hair" theorem. We also find some alternative solutions with singular metric behaviour, but finite energy.     Density Functional Theory of Bosons in a Trap

    A time-dependent Kohn-Sham (KS) like theory is presented for N bosons in thre e and lower-dimensional traps. We derive coupled equations, which allow one to calculate the energies of elementary excitations. A rigorous proof is given to show that the KS like equation correctly describes properties of the one-dimensional condensate of impenetrable bosons in a general time-dependent harmonic trap in the larg N limit.Comment: 10 page

    Vortices and domain walls in a Chern-Simons theory with magnetic moment interaction

    We study the structure and properties of vortices in a recently proposed Abelian Maxwell-Chern-Simons model in 2+12 +1 dimensions. The model which is described by gauge field interacting with a complex scalar field, includes two parity and time violating terms: the Chern-Simons and the anomalous magnetic terms. Self-dual relativistic vortices are discussed in detail. We also find one dimensional soliton solutions of the domain wall type.     Collective oscillations of a 1D trapped Bose gas

    Starting from the hydrodynamic equations of superfluids, we calculate the frequencies of the collective oscillations of a harmonically trapped Bose gas for various 1D configurations. These include the mean field regime described by Gross-Pitaevskii theory and the beyond mean field regime at small densities described by Lieb-Liniger theory. The relevant combinations of the physical parameters governing the transition between the different regimes are discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
