On the relationship between the geometrical control of scintillation indices and the data detrending problems observed at high latitudes
The experimental estimate of radio waves scintillation, caused by plasma density irregularities in the ionosphere,
is usually attempted by means of scintillation indices which are essentially standard deviations of stochasticly
fluctuating parts of the received radio wave intensity and phase. At high latitudes, provided that the propagation
problem may be modelled by means of the weak scattering theory, the typical scintillation indices S4 and σφ depend
on a geometrical factor which introduces some amplifications on their values. Scintillation indices S4 and
σφ measured at auroral latitudes are estimated by means of different boundary detrending conditions and the geometrical
effect on those detrending conditions is investigated. In the case of the polar Low Earth Orbiting (LEO)
satellite links considered here, high phase with low intensity scintillation events do not seem to be related to geometrical
effects only, but rather to misleading data detrending
Anomaly-Induced Magnetic Screening in 2+1 dimensional QED at Finite Density
We show that in 2+1 dimensional Quantum Electrodynamics an external magnetic
field applied to a finite density of massless fermions is screened, due to a
-dimensional realization of the underlying -dimensional axial anomaly
of the space components of the electric current. This is shown to imply
screening of the magnetic field, i.e., the Meissner effect. We discuss the

Large-scale study of the NGC 1399 globular cluster system in Fornax
We present a Washington C and Kron-Cousins R photometric study of the
globular cluster system of NGC 1399, the central galaxy of the Fornax cluster.
A large areal coverage of 1 square degree around NGC 1399 is achieved with
three adjoining fields of the MOSAIC II Imager at the CTIO 4-m telescope.
Working on such a large field, we can perform the first indicative
determination of the total size of the NGC 1399 globular cluster system. The
estimated angular extent, measured from the NGC 1399 centre and up to a
limiting radius where the areal density of blue globular clusters falls to 30
per cent of the background level, is 45 +/- 5 arcmin, which corresponds to 220
- 275 kpc at the Fornax distance. The bimodal colour distribution of this
globular cluster system, as well as the different radial distribution of blue
and red clusters, up to these large distances from the parent galaxy, are
confirmed. The azimuthal globular cluster distribution exhibits asymmetries
that might be understood in terms of tidal stripping of globulars from NGC
1387, a nearby galaxy. The good agreement between the areal density profile of

Comparison of ionospheric scintillation models with experimental data for satellite navigation applications
A comparison between two of the most used scintillation models and experimental data is presented. The experimental
data have been derived from a GPS scintillation monitor developed at Cornell University and placed in Tucuman
(Argentina), under the peak of the anomaly. The models used (GISM and WBMOD) have been run for the
geophysical conditions corresponding to the measurements. The comparison is done by subdividing the information
on the basis of an ionospheric grid of 5°×5° surface square boxes. The comparison has been performed for
several local times, from 18 LT until 04 LT. Here, only a few cases of particular interest are shown. The goal is to
understand if the models are able to forecast actual scintillation morphology (from the satellite navigation systems
point of view) and if they could be used to yield an estimate of scintillation effects on satellite navigation systems
Performance of formulae based estimates of glomerular filtration rate for carboplatin dosing in stage 1 seminoma
<b>Background:</b> Single cycle carboplatin, dosed by glomerular filtration rate (GFR), is standard adjuvant therapy for stage 1 seminoma. Accurate measurement of GFR is essential for correct dosing. Isotopic methods remain the gold standard for the determination of GFR. Formulae to estimate GFR have improved the assessment of renal function in non-oncological settings. We assessed the utility of these formulae for carboplatin dosing.<p></p>
<b>Methods:</b> We studied consecutive subjects receiving adjuvant carboplatin for stage 1 seminoma at our institution between 2007 and 2012. Subjects underwent 51Cr-ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) measurement of GFR with carboplatin dose calculated using the Calvert formula. Theoretical carboplatin doses were calculated from estimated GFR using Chronic Kidney Disease-Epidemiology (CKD-EPI), Management of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) and Cockcroft–Gault (CG) formulae with additional correction for actual body surface area (BSA). Carboplatin doses calculated by formulae were compared with dose calculated by isotopic GFR; a difference <10% was considered acceptable.<p></p>
<b>Results:</b> 115 patients were identified. Mean isotopic GFR was 96.9 ml/min/1.73 m2. CG and CKD-EPI tended to overestimate GFR whereas MDRD tended to underestimate GFR. The CKD-EPI formula had greatest accuracy. The CKD-EPI formula, corrected for actual BSA, performed best; 45.9% of patients received within 10% of correct carboplatin dose. Patients predicted as underdosed (13.5%) by CKD-EPI were more likely to be obese (p = 0.013); there were no predictors of the 40.5% receiving an excess dose.<p></p>
<b>Conclusions:</b> Our data support further evaluation of the CKD-EPI formula in this patient population but clinically significant variances in carboplatin dosing occur using non-isotopic methods of GFR estimation. Isotopic determination of GFR should remain the recommended standard for carboplatin dosing when accuracy is essential.<p></p>
