Does environment affect the star formation histories of early-type galaxies?
Differences in the stellar populations of galaxies can be used to quantify
the effect of environment on the star formation history. We target a sample of
early-type galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in two different
environmental regimes: close pairs and a general sample where environment is
measured by the mass of their host dark matter halo. We apply a blind source
separation technique based on principal component analysis, from which we
define two parameters that correlate, respectively, with the average stellar
age (eta) and with the presence of recent star formation (zeta) from the
spectral energy distribution of the galaxy. We find that environment leaves a
second order imprint on the spectra, whereas local properties - such as
internal velocity dispersion - obey a much stronger correlation with the

A Feynman-Kac Formula for Anticommuting Brownian Motion
Motivated by application to quantum physics, anticommuting analogues of
Wiener measure and Brownian motion are constructed. The corresponding Ito
integrals are defined and the existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class
of stochastic differential equations is established. This machinery is used to
provide a Feynman-Kac formula for a class of Hamiltonians. Several specific

Characterization of Bose-Hubbard Models with Quantum Non-demolition Measurements
We propose a scheme for the detection of quantum phase transitions in the 1D
Bose-Hubbard (BH) and 1D Extended Bose-Hubbard (EBH) models, using the
non-demolition measurement technique of quantum polarization spectroscopy. We
use collective measurements of the effective total angular momentum of a
particular spatial mode to characterise the Mott insulator to superfluid phase
transition in the BH model, and the transition to a density wave state in the
EBH model. We extend the application of collective measurements to the ground

Polarization and Charge Transfer in the Hydration of Chloride Ions
A theoretical study of the structural and electronic properties of the
chloride ion and water molecules in the first hydration shell is presented. The
calculations are performed on an ensemble of configurations obtained from
molecular dynamics simulations of a single chloride ion in bulk water. The
simulations utilize the polarizable AMOEBA force field for trajectory
generation, and MP2-level calculations are performed to examine the electronic
structure properties of the ions and surrounding waters in the external field
of more distant waters. The ChelpG method is employed to explore the effective
charges and dipoles on the chloride ions and first-shell waters. The Quantum
Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) is further utilized to examine charge
transfer from the anion to surrounding water molecules.
From the QTAIM analysis, 0.2 elementary charges are transferred from the ion
to the first-shell water molecules. The default AMOEBA model overestimates the
average dipole moment magnitude of the ion compared with the estimated quantum
mechanical value. The average magnitude of the dipole moment of the water
molecules in the first shell treated at the MP2 level, with the more distant
waters handled with an AMOEBA effective charge model, is 2.67 D. This value is
close to the AMOEBA result for first-shell waters (2.72 D) and is slightly
reduced from the bulk AMOEBA value (2.78 D). The magnitude of the dipole moment
of the water molecules in the first solvation shell is most strongly affected
by the local water-water interactions and hydrogen bonds with the second
solvation shell, rather than by interactions with the ion.Comment: Slight revision, in press at J. Chem. Phy

The provision in The Education For All Handicapped Children Act, Public Law 94-142, requiring an IEP for each handicapped child has caused a great deal of activity and development in the field of Special Education

Computer mapping of LANDSAT data for environmental applications
The author has identified the following significant results. Land cover overlays and maps produced from LANDSAT are providing information on existing land use and resources throughout the 208 study area. The overlays are being used to delineate drainage areas of a predominant land cover type. Information on cover type is also being combined with other pertinent data to develop estimates of sediment and nutrients flows from the drainage area. The LANDSAT inventory of present land cover together with population projects is providing a basis for developing maps of anticipated land use patterns required to evaluate impact on water quality which may result from these patterns. Overlays of forest types were useful for defining wildlife habitat and vegetational resources in the region. LANDSAT data and computer assisted interpretation was found to be a rapid cost effective procedure for inventorying land cover on a regional basis. The entire 208 inventory which include acquisition of ground truth, LANDSAT tapes, computer processing, and production of overlays and coded tapes was completed within a period of 2 months at a cost of about 0.6 cents per acre, a significant improvement in time and cost over conventional photointerpretation and mapping techniques
Psychiatrists should investigate their patients less
Psychiatrists often order investigations such as blood tests, neuroimaging and electroencephalograms for their patients. Rationales include ruling out 'organic' causes of psychiatric presentations, providing baseline parameters before starting psychotropic medications, and screening for general cardiometabolic health. Hospital protocols often recommend an extensive panel of blood tests on admission to a psychiatric ward. In this Against the Stream article, we argue that many of these investigations are at best useless and at worst harmful: the yield of positive findings that change clinical management is extremely low; special investigations are a poor substitute for a targeted history and examination; and incidental findings may cause anxiety and further unwarranted investigation. Cognitive and cultural reasons why over-investigation continues are discussed. We conclude by encouraging a more targeted approach guided by a thorough bedside clinical assessment
