    THE NON-ENGLISH LECTURERS’ READING COMPETENCE IN READING ENGLISH TEXT AT HIGHER EDUCATION IN CENTRAL JAVA

    Abstract Nowadays, the government offers a lot of scholarships to non-English lecturers to study abroad. However, only a few that could get the scholarship due to their inability to communicate in English or to comprehend English texts. In this paper, therefore, the writers want to find out whether or not the non-English lecturers could get some benefits to comprehend the English texts after being given the manual book developed by the researchers. Besides, the researchers also want to find out the elements of the text that are easy or difficult to be understood by them. The method used in this research was experimental research with the population of non English lecturers at Kopertis Wilayah VI. One hundred (100) people from several universities in Central Java were taken as the sample. Two kinds of instrument for collecting the data, namely reading test and interview were used. Reading test material was taken from the modification of the TOEFL test with the intention to know the ability of non English lecturers in reading English texts and which elements of the text are difficult or easy to be mastered by the lecturers. The interview was used to know the lecturers’ perception on the appropriateness of the manual book given and whether they got some benefits from it

A total of 35 studentsof 7A observed and tested by the teacher in their activeness and also their ability in producingthe expression after getting the video treatment. The result showed that the ability in speakinggiving instruction expression of the students improved after showing native video in producinginstruction expression

    ABSTRACT This research is aimed at developing printed teaching materials with a pragmatic perspective for college students. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative by sharing questionnaire made with google form through the WhatsApp group of two classes. The unit of analysis was the responses of 40 students from 2 classes. This research was based on a qualitative analysis of the students' responses. From the responses, it can be concluded that teaching materials have a very vital role and function in the learning process. Therefore, teaching materials should be designed and developed in such a way that they are adapted to the existing curriculum and also to the needs of students. In this research, researchers will develop an English teaching material with pragmatic perspective which are able to help English learners reach the expected communicative competence. In total, there are five sections that were asked to students. Those five sections are, 1) Textbook availability, 2) Textbook Visual, 3) Textbook Contents, 4) The Textbook Currently Being Used, and 5) Text Selections

    The Translation Methods Used in the Subtitles of Dialogues in Maleficent Movie

    The objectives of this research are to find out the translation methods used in the dialogues, to find out the method that often appears in the subtitles of Maleficent movies, and to describe the quality level of English to Indonesian subtitles in Maleficent's translation. The theory used to analyze the translation method is the theory of Gottlieb (1992). This research is classified into qualitative descriptive research. The research data is from dialogue subtitles in the Maleficent film. The data source is obtained from the film Maleficent—data collection techniques with documentation. At the same time, data analysis is done by collecting, classifying, calculating, dominating, and drawing conclusions. The results of this research indicate that translators use six methods. These methods are paraphrasing (16,1%) and transfer (39,5%). Imitation (8,0%), condensation (8,0%), decimation (0,6%), and deletion (27,8%). From these results, it can be concluded that the translation method that translators dominantly use is the transfer method. Besides, subsequent research can provide knowledge that can be useful for readers and can be the next related research that will be reviewed. Further research is also needed to keep up with the development of translation studies

    STUDENTS’ PERCEPTONS OF GAMIFICATION APPROACH BY USING KAHOOT!: A SURVEY STUDY

    Technological innovation has created various learning models and tools that can increase the effectiveness of the learning process. There are a wide variety of learning software and platforms designed to support teachers in their teaching process and help them create a sustainable learning environment. Research has shown that infusion of 'gamification' software can influence and improve student learning outcomes and create a positive learning environment. This article reports a survey study conducted among 32 students from 8D SMP N 36 Semarang who had experience using Kahoot! in the learning process. This study used the closed-ended questionnaire consisting of 10 statements regarding the students' perceptions for gamification approach and the use of Kahoot!. The questionnaire of the Likert Scale consists of 4 (four) alternative points, specifically: Strongly Agree (SA), Agree (A), Disagree (D), and Strongly Disagree (SD). The four-choice scales were used to force respondents to choose one of the points because the points "Neutral" were not available. The results show that almost all participants have positive experiences when participating in learning process that integrates the gamification approach and Kahoot!. The majority of participants reported that they were able to be actively involved in their learning process while using Kahoot! platforms. Adaptive software and platforms like Kahoot! enable students to engage and actively participate in their learning process, and thus provide a more meaningful and rich learning experience

    Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini telah dilaksanakan dengan baik dalam bentuk penyuluhan di kelurahan Gedawang. Kegiatan ini melibatkan tim dari Universitas PGRI Semarang dan Ibu-Ibu PKK kelurahan Gedawang. Dalam pelaksanaanya, kegiatan ini mendapatkan respon yang sangat baik. Hal ini ditandai dengan antusiasme warga/ibu-ibu PKK kelurahan Gedawang dalam mengikuti kegiatan penyuluhan. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan pada tanggal 24 Januari 2015 dan dilanjutkan lagi pada?é?á tanggal 7 Maret 2015. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah terbinanya kesadaran dan pengetahuan yang baik terhadap masalah-masalah dalam mendidik anak khususnya anak usia dini. Metode yang digunakan adalah ceramah dan tanya jawab langsung. Hasil akhir dari kegiatan IbM ini menunjukan bahwa warga/Ibu-Ibu PKK memerlukan lebih banyak informasi dan pengetahuan yang berkaitan dengan bagaimana proses mendidik anak usia dini dan bagaimana menyelesaikan masalah-masalah yang di alami oleh anak usia dini. Hal tersebut telah dibahas dengan lengkap pada penyuluhan sehingga sekarang ini warga /ibu-ibu Kelurahan Gedawang telah dapat mengurangi permasalahan yang mereka hadapi selama proses mendidik anak-anak mereka yang masih dalam usia dini.     PENINGKATAN KOMPETENSI GURU MELALUI PENYUSUNAN PTK BAGI GURU-GURU SMA DI GUBUG, GROBOGAN

    Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini dilaksanakan dalam bentuk pelatihan penyusunan proposal PTK bagi guru-guru SMA di Kecamatan Gubug, Kabupaten Grobogan yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan profesionalisme guru dalam menyusun proposal PTK yang nantinya berguna bagi guru tersebut untuk mengembangkan kinerjanya melalui pelaksanaan PTK. Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini telah dilaksanakan pada hari Rabu, 5 Februari dan 7 Februari 2014 dalam bentuk pelatihan penyusunan proposal PTK, yang bertempat di SMA N 1 Gubug, Grobogan. Kemudian dilanjutkan dengan kegiatan pembimbingan secara individu melalui media online tanggal 10-15 Februari 2014 dengan alokasi waktu 12 jam. Selanjutnya adalah kegiatan pembimbingan evaluasi proposal melalui media online dengan alokasi waktu 12 jam pada minggu ketiga. Jumlah peserta pelatihan adalah 20 guru dari beberapa mata pelajaran yang berbeda yang berasal dari SMA N 1 Gubug, Grobogan. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan ini adalah ceramah, tanya jawab, pelatihan, dan diakhiri dengan penugasan menyusun proposal PTK. Hasil dari kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini adalah peserta mampu menyusun proposal PTK yang sebelumnya diawali dengan pelatihan penyusunan proposal PTK, kemudian pembimbingan secara individual.
