Multiplicative perturbation of nonlinear m-accretive operators

    Get PDF
AbstractCriteria are obtained for when an accretive product (i.e., composition) BA of nonlinear m-accretive operators A and B in a Banach space X will be itself m-accretive; and, in particular, when a monotone product of two maximal monotone operators in a Hilbert space will be maximal monotone. This extends the theory of multiplicative perturbation of infinitesimal generators of contraction semigroups to the nonlinear case. Also obtained as a biproduct are existence theorems for certain Hammerstein integral equations

Coccidiomycosis infection of the patella mimicking a neoplasm - two case reports.

BackgroundCoccidioidomycosis is an endemic fungal infection in the southwestern of United States. Most infections are asymptomatic or manifest with mild respiratory complaints. Rare cases may cause extrapulmonary or disseminated disease. We report two cases of knee involvement that presented as isolated lytic lesions of the patella mimicking neoplasms.Case presentationThe first case, a 27 year-old immunocompetent male had progressive left anterior knee pain for four months. The second case was a 78 year-old male had left anterior knee pain for three months. Both of them had visited general physicians without conclusive diagnosis. A low attenuation lytic lesion in the patella was demonstrated on their image studies, and the initial radiologist's interpretation was suggestive of a primary bony neoplasm. The patients were referred for orthopaedic oncology consultation. The first case had a past episode of pulmonary coccioidomycosis 2 years prior, while the second case had no previous coccioidal infection history but lived in an endemic area, the central valley of California. Surgical biopsy was performed in both cases due to diagnostic uncertainty. Final pathologic examination revealed large thick walled spherules filled with endospores establishing the final diagnosis of extrapulmonary coccidioidomycosis.ConclusionsThough history and laboratory findings are supportive, definitive diagnosis still depends on growth in culture or endospores identified on histology. We suggest that orthopaedic surgeons and radiologists keep in mind that chronic fungal infections can mimic osseous neoplasm by imaging

The Importance of Ongoing ERP Training and Support

    Get PDF
This paper formulates and tests a model of the factors influencing organisational capacity to use an ERP system effectively in the years after go-live. Three large organisations’ post-implementation studies into end-user training were used as preliminary validation of this model; and to highlight the proposition that users’ ERP knowledge and skills will degrade in the absence of a systematic approach to ongoing training and support. The analysis also found that the negative effects of staff attrition and turnover offset the positive initiatives to enhance end-user competence in the most proactive organisation studied

Evaluation of the Good Life Festival : a model for co-produced dementia events

    Get PDF
The article presents an evaluation of The Good Life Festival, a co-produced event between people living with dementia, Salford University Dementia Institute, Alzheimer’s Society, Salford and Salford Adventures. This was a new way of working but important because people living with dementia said they thought there should be an event organised ‘for people with dementia by people with dementia’. A dementia friendly evaluation form was circulated asking: did you enjoy the event, did you learn something new, and do you feel more positive about living with dementia following the event. Thirty five of the eighty people who attended completed the evaluation form all of whom said they enjoyed it. 32 (91%) learned something new, and 27 (77%) left feeling more positive about living with dementia. Qualitative feedback is also included in this article including planning group reflections. Recommendations based on what we learned from planning and running the event are provided which includes having a media strategy in place and to send a follow up letter to remind people of information about resources/services advertised on the da

An efficient synthesis of 1,6-anhydro-N-acetylmuramic acid from N-acetylglucosamine

    Get PDF
A novel synthesis of 1,6-anhydro-N-acetylmuramic acid is described, which proceeds in only five steps from the cheap starting material N-acetylglucosamine. This efficient synthesis should enable future studies into the importance of 1,6-anhydromuramic acid in bacterial cell wall recycling processes

Pathoblockers or antivirulence drugs as a new option for the treatment of bacterial infections

    Get PDF
The rapid development of antimicrobial resistance is threatening mankind to such an extent that the World Health Organization expects more deaths from infections than from cancer in 2050 if current trends continue. To avoid this scenario, new classes of antiinfectives must urgently be developed. Antibiotics with new modes of action are needed, but other concepts are also currently being pursued. Targeting bacterial virulence as a means of blocking pathogenicity is a promising new strategy for disarming pathogens. Furthermore, it is believed that this new approach is less susceptible towards resistance development. In this review, recent examples of anti-infective compounds acting on several types of bacterial targets, e.g., adhesins, toxins and bacterial communication, are described
