Respiration and Heart Rate at the Surface between Dives in Northern Elephant Seals
All underwater activities of diving mammals are constrained by the need for surface gas exchange. Our aim was to measure respiratory rate (fb) and heart rate (fh) at the surface between dives in free-ranging northern elephant seals Mirounga angustirostris. We recorded fb and fh acoustically in six translocated juveniles, 1.8-2. 4 years old, and three migrating adult males from the rookery at Ano Nuevo, California, USA. To each seal, we attached a diving instrument to record the diving pattern, a satellite tag to track movements and location, a digital audio tape recorder or acoustic datalogger with an external hydrophone to record the sounds of respiration and fh at the surface, and a VHF transmitter to facilitate recovery. During surface intervals averaging 2.2+/−0.4 min, adult males breathed a mean of 32.7+/−5.4 times at a rate of 15. 3+/−1.8 breaths min(−)(1) (means +/− s.d., N=57). Mean fh at the surface was 84+/−3 beats min(−)(1). The fb of juveniles was 26 % faster than that of adult males, averaging 19.2+/−2.2 breaths min(−)(1) for a mean total of 41.2+/−5.0 breaths during surface intervals lasting 2.6+/−0.31 min. Mean fh at the surface was 106+/−3 beats min(−)(1). fb and fh did not change significantly over the course of surface intervals. Surface fb and fh were not clearly associated with levels of exertion, such as rapid horizontal transit or apparent foraging, or with measures of immediately previous or subsequent diving performance, such as diving duration, diving depth or swimming speed. Together, surface respiration rate and the duration of the preceding dive were significant predictors of surface interval duration. This implies that elephant seals minimize surface time spent loading oxygen depending on rates of oxygen uptake and previous depletion of stores
Enhancement of vaccinia virus based oncolysis with histone deacetylase inhibitors
Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDI) dampen cellular innate immune response by decreasing interferon production and have been shown to increase the growth of vesicular stomatitis virus and HSV. As attenuated tumour-selective oncolytic vaccinia viruses (VV) are already undergoing clinical evaluation, the goal of this study is to determine whether HDI can also enhance the potency of these poxviruses in infection-resistant cancer cell lines. Multiple HDIs were tested and Trichostatin A (TSA) was found to potently enhance the spread and replication of a tumour selective vaccinia virus in several infection-resistant cancer cell lines. TSA significantly decreased the number of lung metastases in a syngeneic B16F10LacZ lung metastasis model yet did not increase the replication of vaccinia in normal tissues. The combination of TSA and VV increased survival of mice harbouring human HCT116 colon tumour xenografts as compared to mice treated with either agent alone. We conclude that TSA can selectively and effectively enhance the replication and spread of oncolytic vaccinia virus in cancer cells. © 2010 MacTavish et al
The effect of a 24-hour photoperiod on the survival, growth and swim bladder inflation of pre-flexion yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) larvae
The effects of two different continuous photoperiod regimes on survival, growth and swim bladder inflation of pre-flexion yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) larvae were investigated. Each photoperiod regime was tested twice with a different larval cohort to confirm the observed results. Trials 1 and 2 tested the effect of a reduced night-time light intensity (10-molesm-2s-1=30% of the daytime intensity) and found that those larvae reared for 8days under the 24h lighting (24-L) photoperiod exhibited a slight improvement in survival compared to those reared under the control photoperiod of 12h light (12-L), however these improvements were not significant. In addition, those larvae reared under this photoperiod regime were equal in length to those in the control. Trials 3 and 4 compared the same variables in larvae reared under a continuous photoperiod (24-L) with a constant light intensity of 30-molesm-2s-1, against those reared under the aforementioned 12-L photoperiod. Survival of larvae under the continuous photoperiods were 9±1% (n=2) and 10±2% (n=3) for Trials 3 and 4, respectively, compared to less than 1% in both control treatments; differences that in both cases were highly significant. In addition, in both trials larvae cultured under the 24-L photoperiod were significantly larger and exhibited more advanced development than those reared under the 12-L photoperiod, however swim bladder inflation was significantly lower. We suggest that the improved survival and growth achieved under a continuous photoperiod is due to the extended foraging time combined with the prevention of mortality caused by night-time sinking
Transition from Townsend to glow discharge: subcritical, mixed or supercritical
The full parameter space of the transition from Townsend to glow discharge is
investigated numerically in one space dimension in the classical model: with
electrons and positive ions drifting in the local electric field, impact
ionization by electrons ( process), secondary electron emission from
the cathode ( process) and space charge effects. We also perform a
systematic analytical small current expansion about the Townsend limit up to
third order in the total current that fits our numerical data very well.
Depending on and system size pd, the transition from Townsend to glow
discharge can show the textbook subcritical behavior, but for smaller values of
pd, we also find supercritical or some intermediate ``mixed'' behavior. The
analysis in particular lays the basis for understanding the complex
spatio-temporal patterns in planar barrier discharge systems.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Glow discharge in low pressure plasma PVD: mathematical model and numerical simulations
In this paper we analyze the problem of glow discharge in low pressure plasma
in industrial plant, for chambers of different shapes and various working
parameters, like pressure and electric potential. The model described is based
upon a static approximation of the AC configuration with two electrodes and a
drift diffusion approximation for the current density of positive ions and
electrons. A detailed discussion of the boundary conditions imposed is given,
as well as the full description of the mathematical model. Numerical
simulations were performed for a simple 1D model and two different 2D models,
corresponding to two different settings of the industrial plant. The simpler
case consists of a radially symmetric chamber, with one central electrode
(cathode), based upon a DC generator. In this case, the steel chamber acts as
the anode. The second model concerns a two dimensional horizontal cut of the
most common plant configuration, with two electrodes connected to an AC
generator. The case is treated in a "quasi-static" approximation. The three
models show some common behaviours, particularly including the main expected
features, such as dark spaces, glow regions and a wide "plasma region".
Furthermore, the three shown models show some similarities with previously
published results concerning 1D and simplified 2D models, as well as with some

Collective coherence in planar semiconductor microcavities
Semiconductor microcavities, in which strong coupling of excitons to confined
photon modes leads to the formation of exciton-polariton modes, have
increasingly become a focus for the study of spontaneous coherence, lasing, and
condensation in solid state systems. This review discusses the significant
experimental progress to date, the phenomena associated with coherence which
have been observed, and also discusses in some detail the different theoretical
models that have been used to study such systems. We consider both the case of
non-resonant pumping, in which coherence may spontaneously arise, and the
related topics of resonant pumping, and the optical parametric oscillator.Comment: 46 pages, 12 figure
How is female mate choice affected by male competition?

Indeed, on the question of whether competition should help or hinder the choice process, opinions scattered throughout the sexual selection literature seem unnecessarily polarised. We argue, in the light of recent theoretical and empirical advances, that the effect of competition on mate choice depends on whether it results in the choosy sex attaining high breeding value for total fitness, considering both direct and indirect fitness benefits. Specifically, trade-offs may occur between different fitness benefits if some are correlated with male competitive ability whilst others are not. Moreover, the costs and benefits of mating with competitive males may vary in time and/or space. These considerations highlight the importance of injecting a life-history perspective into sexual selection studies. Within this context, we turn to the sexual selection literature to try to offer insights into the circumstances when competition might be expected to have positive or negative implications for pre-copulatory female choice. In this regard, we elaborate on three stages where competition might impact upon the choice process: (i) during mate detection, (ii) mate evaluation, and (iii) in dictating actual mating outcomes.
