Stability boundaries of roll and square convection in binary fluid mixtures with positive separation ratio
Rayleigh-B\'{e}nard convection in horizontal layers of binary fluid mixtures
heated from below with realistic horizontal boundary conditions is studied
theoretically using multi-mode Galerkin expansions. For positive separation
ratios the main difference between the mixtures and pure fluids lies in the
existence of stable three dimensional patterns near onset in a wide range of
the parameter space. We evaluated the stationary solutions of roll, crossroll,
and square convection and we determined the location of the stability
boundaries for many parameter combinations thereby obtaining the Busse balloon

Bistability of Slow and Fast Traveling Waves in Fluid Mixtures
The appearence of a new type of fast nonlinear traveling wave states in
binary fluid convection with increasing Soret effect is elucidated and the
parameter range of their bistability with the common slower ones is evaluated
numerically. The bifurcation behavior and the significantly different
spatiotemporal properties of the different wave states - e.g. frequency, flow
structure, and concentration distribution - are determined and related to each
other and to a convenient measure of their nonlinearity. This allows to derive
a limit for the applicability of small amplitude expansions. Additionally an
universal scaling behavior of frequencies and mixing properties is found.

Crystallization of the Photosystem II core complex and its chlorophyll binding subunit CP43 from transplastomic plants of Nicotianatabacum
Photosystem II from transplastomic plants of Nicotiana tabacum with a hexahistidine tag at the N-terminal end of the PsbE subunit (α-chain of the cytochrome b559) was purified according to the protocol of Fey et al. (BBA 12:1501â1509, 2008). The protein sample was then subjected to two additional gel filtration runs in order to increase its homogeneity and to standardize the amount of detergent. Large three dimensional crystals of the core complex were obtained. Crystals of one of its chlorophyll binding subunits (CP43) in isolation grew in very similar conditions that differed only in the concentration of the detergent. Diffraction of Photosystem II and CP43 crystals at various synchrotron beamlines was limited to a resolution of 7 and 14 Ă
, respectively. In both cases the diffraction quality was insufficient for an unambiguous assignment of the crystallographic lattice or space group
Limnogeological studies of maar lake Ranu Klindungan, East Java, Indonesia
Ranu Klindungan is a lake at the northern lowlands of East Java close to the northern slope of the Tengger Caldera. Outcrops of phreatomagmatic base surge deposits at the inner southern crater slope indicate that the lake is situated in a maar crater. The lake has a surface of 2.1 km2 and a maximum depth of 126 m. Details to the morphometry are given. Groundwater inflow must be high. The lake is oligomictic and eutrophicated with a shallow epilimnion and a large anoxic hypolimnion. Mn, Fe, and TP have distinct peaks at the upper hypolimnion, probably caused by the groundwater inflow. Profundal sediments of Ranu Klindungan consist of carbonaceous diatom-gyttja and frequent turbidites. Often the fine layered sediments reveal a distinct cyclicity of layers of diatoms, carbonate and finally terrigenous material. Probably the diatom and carbonate layers represent the dry season (June-October), whereas the terrigenous layer is deposited by distal turbidites during the rain season (November-May). We interpret these cycles as varves. Despite tropical weathering, silt-sized minerals in terrigenous layers are mainly fresh feldspars, which points to rapid transport and embedding of these components. Thicker intraclast-turbidites may be associated with strong precipitation events during the rain season. The diatom record confirms this hypothesis: diatom layers are rich in complete valves of planktonic forms, whereas in the terrigenous layers few, mostly broken, valves of littoral species occur. The high proportion of turbidites contributes to the near-horizontal profundal lake bottom
Changes in Gray Matter Induced by LearningâRevisited
BACKGROUND: Recently, activation-dependant structural brain plasticity in humans has been demonstrated in adults after three months of training a visio-motor skill. Learning three-ball cascade juggling was associated with a transient and highly selective increase in brain gray matter in the occipito-temporal cortex comprising the motion sensitive area hMT/V5 bilaterally. However, the exact time-scale of usage-dependant structural changes occur is still unknown. A better understanding of the temporal parameters may help to elucidate to what extent this type of cortical plasticity contributes to fast adapting cortical processes that may be relevant to learning. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using a 3 Tesla scanner and monitoring whole brain structure we repeated and extended our original study in 20 healthy adult volunteers, focussing on the temporal aspects of the structural changes and investigated whether these changes are performance or exercise dependant. The data confirmed our earlier observation using a mean effects analysis and in addition showed that learning to juggle can alter gray matter in the occipito-temporal cortex as early as after 7 days of training. Neither performance nor exercise alone could explain these changes. CONCLUSION: We suggest that the qualitative change (i.e. learning of a new task) is more critical for the brain to change its structure than continued training of an already-learned task
Influence of through-flow on linear pattern formation properties in binary mixture convection
We investigate how a horizontal plane Poiseuille shear flow changes linear
convection properties in binary fluid layers heated from below. The full linear
field equations are solved with a shooting method for realistic top and bottom
boundary conditions. Through-flow induced changes of the bifurcation thresholds
(stability boundaries) for different types of convective solutions are deter-
mined in the control parameter space spanned by Rayleigh number, Soret coupling
(positive as well as negative), and through-flow Reynolds number. We elucidate
the through-flow induced lifting of the Hopf symmetry degeneracy of left and
right traveling waves in mixtures with negative Soret coupling. Finally we
determine with a saddle point analysis of the complex dispersion relation of
the field equations over the complex wave number plane the borders between
absolute and convective instabilities for different types of perturbations in
comparison with the appropriate Ginzburg-Landau amplitude equation

Pattern selection in the absolutely unstable regime as a nonlinear eigenvalue problem: Taylor vortices in axial flow
A unique pattern selection in the absolutely unstable regime of a driven,
nonlinear, open-flow system is analyzed: The spatiotemporal structures of
rotationally symmetric vortices that propagate downstream in the annulus of the
rotating Taylor-Couette system due to an externally imposed axial through-flow
are investigated for two different axial boundary conditions at the in- and
outlet. Unlike the stationary patterns in systems without through-flow the
spatiotemporal structures of propagating vortices are independent of parameter
history, initial conditions, and system's length. They do, however, depend on
the axial boundary conditions, the driving rate of the inner cylinder and the
through-flow rate. Our analysis of the amplitude equation shows that the
pattern selection can be described by a nonlinear eigenvalue problem with the
frequency being the eigenvalue. Approaching the border between absolute and
convective instability the eigenvalue problem becomes effectively linear and
the selection mechanism approaches that one of linear front propagation.

Persistent Organic Chemicals in the Pacific Basin Countries: An Overview
The Pacific Basin is a unique geographical region representing tropical, temperate and polar zones. This region is home to 2/3 of worldâs population and consists of rapidly growing economies (countries) and highly developed countries. The Pacific Basin countries have had a history of use of persistent organic chemicals (POCs) at varying proportions during the last five decades. Due to diverse climatic and socio-economic conditions, the environment and biota in different countries in this basin have varying degrees of environmental contamination and effects on wildlife and humans. In this chapter, the historical background of POCs including, discovery, production, use, regulations/restrictions imposed, current status and possible future trends are reviewed especially focusing on the countries in the Pacific Rim
Genome-wide association study identifies loci associated with liability to alcohol and drug dependence that is associated with variability in reward-related ventral striatum activity in African- and European-Americans.
Genetic influences on alcohol and drug dependence partially overlap, however, specific loci underlying this overlap remain unclear. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of a phenotype representing alcohol or illicit drug dependence (ANYDEP) among 7291 European-Americans (EA; 2927 cases) and 3132 African-Americans (AA: 1315 cases) participating in the family-based Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism. ANYDEP was heritable (h 2 in EA = 0.60, AA = 0.37). The AA GWAS identified three regions with genome-wide significant (GWS; Pâ<â5E-08) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on chromosomes 3 (rs34066662, rs58801820) and 13 (rs75168521, rs78886294), and an insertion-deletion on chromosome 5 (chr5:141988181). No polymorphisms reached GWS in the EA. One GWS region (chromosome 1: rs1890881) emerged from a trans-ancestral meta-analysis (EAâ+âAA) of ANYDEP, and was attributable to alcohol dependence in both samples. Four genes (AA: CRKL, DZIP3, SBK3; EA: P2RX6) and four sets of genes were significantly enriched within biological pathways for hemostasis and signal transduction. GWS signals did not replicate in two independent samples but there was weak evidence for association between rs1890881 and alcohol intake in the UK Biobank. Among 118 AA and 481 EA individuals from the Duke Neurogenetics Study, rs75168521 and rs1890881 genotypes were associated with variability in reward-related ventral striatum activation. This study identified novel loci for substance dependence and provides preliminary evidence that these variants are also associated with individual differences in neural reward reactivity. Gene discovery efforts in non-European samples with distinct patterns of substance use may lead to the identification of novel ancestry-specific genetic markers of risk
