Static quantities of a neutral bilepton in the 331 model with right-handed neutrinos
A neutral vector boson can possess static electromagnetic properties provided
that the associated field is no self-conjugate. This possibility is explored in
the model with right-handed neutrinos, which
predicts a complex neutral gauge boson in a nontrivial representation of
the electroweak group. In this model the only nonvanishing form factors are the
CP-even ones, which arise from both the quark and gauge sectors, and contribute
to the magnetic dipole and the electric quadrupole moments of this neutral
particle.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Jean-Baptiste Bélanger, hydraulic engineer, researcher and academic
Jean-Baptiste BÉLANGER (1790-1874) worked as a hydraulic engineer at the beginning of his career. He developed the backwater equation to calculate gradually-varied open channel flow properties for steady flow conditions. Later, as an academic at the leading French engineering schools (Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées, and Ecole Polytechnique), he developed a new university curriculum in mechanics and several textbooks including a seminal text in hydraulic engineering. His influence on his contemporaries was considerable, and his name is written on the border of one of the four facades of the Eiffel Tower. BÉLANGER's leading role demonstrated the dynamism of practicing engineers at the time, and his contributions paved the way to many significant works in hydraulics
Periodic Modulations in an X-ray Flare from Sagittarius A*
We present the highly significant detection of a quasi-periodic flux
modulation with a period of 22.2 min seen in the X-ray data of the Sgr A* flare
of 2004 August 31. This flaring event, which lasted a total of about three
hours, was detected simultaneously by EPIC on XMM-Newton and the NICMOS
near-infrared camera on the HST. Given the inherent difficulty in, and the lack
of readily available methods for quantifying the probability of a periodic
signal detected over only several cycles in a data set where red noise can be
important, we developed a general method for quantifying the likelihood that
such a modulation is indeed intrinsic to the source and does not arise from
background fluctuations. We here describe this Monte Carlo based method, and
discuss the results obtained by its application to a other XMM-Newton data
sets. Under the simplest hypothesis that we witnessed a transient event that
evolved, peaked and decayed near the marginally stable orbit of the
supermassive black hole, this result implies that for a mass of 3.5 x 10^{6}
Msun, the central object must have an angular momentum corresponding to a spin
parameter of a=0.22.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, submitted to ApJ
Development and Characterisation of a Gas System and its Associated Slow-Control System for an ATLAS Small-Strip Thin Gap Chamber Testing Facility
A quality assurance and performance qualification laboratory was built at
McGill University for the Canadian-made small-strip Thin Gap Chamber (sTGC)
muon detectors produced for the 2019-2020 ATLAS experiment muon spectrometer
upgrade. The facility uses cosmic rays as a muon source to ionise the quenching
gas mixture of pentane and carbon dioxide flowing through the sTGC detector. A
gas system was developed and characterised for this purpose, with a simple and
efficient gas condenser design utilizing a Peltier thermoelectric cooler (TEC).
The gas system was tested to provide the desired 45 vol% pentane concentration.
For continuous operations, a state-machine system was implemented with alerting
and remote monitoring features to run all cosmic-ray data-acquisition
associated slow-control systems, such as high/low voltage, gas system and
environmental monitoring, in a safe and continuous mode, even in the absence of
an operator.Comment: 23 pages, LaTeX, 14 figures, 4 tables, proof corrections for Journal

Field-angle dependence of sound velocity in the Weyl semimetal TaAs
The elastic modulus of a single crystal of the Weyl semimetal TaAs
was investigated by measuring relative changes in the sound velocity under
application of a magnetic field up to 10 T. Using an ultrasonic pulsed-echo
technique, we studied the shear response of the crystal when the angle between
the sound wave propagation and the magnetic field is changed. We observe a
broken tetragonal symmetry at fields above 6 T, an anisotropy that is likely
related to a longitudinal negative magnetoresistance and therefore might
provide evidence of the chiral anomaly, one of the main topological signatures
of this class of materials. We also observe quantum oscillations in the sound
velocity whose frequencies vary with magnetic field orientation. A fan diagram
of Landau level indices reveals topological and trivial Berry phases, depending
on the field orientation, indicating a sensitivity to different Fermi surface
pockets that do or do not enclose Weyl nodes respectively
Single Leptoquark Production at and Colliders
We consider single production of leptoquarks (LQ's) at and
colliders, for two values of the centre-of-mass energy,
GeV and 1 TeV. We find that LQ's which couple within the first
generation are observable for LQ masses almost up to the kinematic limit, both
at and colliders, for the LQ coupling strength equal to
. The cross sections for single production of - and
-generation LQ's at colliders are too small to be observable.
In collisions, on the other hand, -generation LQ's with
masses much larger than can be detected. However,
-generation LQ's can be seen at colliders only for
masses at most , making their observation more probable via the
pair production mechanism.Comment: plain TeX, 14 pages, 6 figures (not included but available on

On SUSY GUTs with a degenerate Higgs mass matrix
Certain supersymmetric grand unified models predict that the coefficients of
the quadratic terms in the MSSM Higgs potential should be degenerate at the GUT
scale. We discuss some examples for such models, and we analyse the
implications of this peculiar condition of a GUT-scale degenerate Higgs mass
matrix for low-scale MSSM phenomenology. To this end we explore the parameter
space which is consistent with existing experimental constraints by means of a
Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis.Comment: 31 pages, 27 figures; v2: typos correcte
A Versatile cascade of intramolecular vilsmeier-haack and azomethine ylide 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition toward tricyclic cores of alkaloids
Abstract: In the pursuit of synthetic efficiency, we developed an innovative one-pot transformation of linear substrates into bi- and tricyclic adducts using a
cascade of amide activation, nucleophilic cyclization, azomethine ylide generation, and subsequent inter- or intramolecular 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition.
Despite the high density and variety of functional groups on the substrates, the sequence occurred with perfect chemoselectivity with good to
excellent yields
Loop-induced photon spectral lines from neutralino annihilation in the NMSSM
We have computed the loop-induced processes of neutralino annihilation into
two photons and, for the first time, into a photon and a Z boson in the
framework of the NMSSM. The photons produced from these radiative modes are
monochromatic and possess a clear "smoking gun" experimental signature. This
numerical analysis has been done with the help of the SloopS code, initially
developed for automatic one-loop calculation in the MSSM. We have computed the
rates for different benchmark points coming from SUGRA and GMSB soft SUSY
breaking scenarios and compared them with the MSSM. We comment on how this
signal can be enhanced, with respect to the MSSM, especially in the low mass
region of the neutralino. We also discuss the possibility of this observable to
constrain the NMSSM parameter space, taking into account the latest limits from
the FERMI collaboration on these two modes.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures. Minor clarifications added in the text. Typing
