    New Perspectives for Evaluating the Mass Transport in Porous Catalysts and Unfolding Macro- and Microkinetics

    In this article we shed light on newly emerging perspectives to characterize and understand the interplay of diffusive mass transport and surface catalytic processes in pores of gas phase metal catalysts. As a case study, nanoporous gold, as an interesting example exhibiting a well-defined pore structure and a high activity for total and partial oxidation reactions is considered. PFG NMR (pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance) measurements allowed here for a quantitative evaluation of gas diffusivities within the material. STEM (scanning transmission electron microscopy) tomography furthermore provided additional insight into the structural details of the pore system, helping to judge which of its features are most decisive for slowing down mass transport. Based on the quantitative knowledge about the diffusion coefficients inside a porous catalyst, it becomes possible to disentangle mass transport contributions form the measured reaction kinetics and to determine the kinetic rate constant of the underlying catalytic surface reaction. In addition, predictions can be made for an improved effectiveness of the catalyst, i.e., optimized conversion rates. This approach will be discussed at the example of low-temperature CO oxidation, efficiently catalysed by npAu at 30 °C. The case study shall reveal that novel porous materials exhibiting well-defined micro- and mesoscopic features and sufficient catalytic activity, in combination with modern techniques to evaluate diffusive transport, offer interesting new opportunities for an integral understanding of catalytic processes

    Pharmacokinetic modelling of orally administered cannabidiol and implications for medication control in horses

    Cannabidiol (CBD) products gain increasing popularity amongst animal owners and veterinarians as an alternative remedy for treatment of stress, inflammation or pain in horses. Whilst the use of cannabinoids is banned in equine sports, there is limited information available concerning CBD detection times in blood or urine. The aim of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetic properties of CBD following oral administration in the horse to assist doping control laboratories with interpreting CBD analytical results. Part 1: dose escalation study: Single oral administration of three escalating doses of CBD paste (0.2 mg/kg, n = 3 horses; 1 mg/kg, n = 3; 3 mg/kg, n = 5) with >7 days wash-out periods in between. Part 2: multiple dose study: oral administration of CBD paste (3 mg/kg, n = 6) twice daily for 15 days. Multiple blood and urine samples were collected daily throughout both studies. Following study part 2, blood and urine samples were collected for 2 weeks to observe the elimination phase. Concentrations of CBD, its metabolites and further cannabinoids were evaluated using gas-chromatography/tandem-mass-spectrometry. Pharmacokinetic parameters were assessed via two approaches: population pharmacokinetic analysis using a nonlinear mixed-effects model and non-compartmental analysis. AUC0–12 h and Cmax were tested for dose proportionality. During the elimination phase, the CBD steady-state urine to serum concentration ratio (Rss) was calculated. Oral CBD medication was well-tolerated in horses. Based on population pharmacokinetics, a three-compartment model with zero-order absorption most accurately described the pharmacokinetic properties of CBD. High volumes of distribution into peripheral compartments and high concentrations of 7-carboxy-CBD were observed in serum. Non-compartmental analysis identified a Cmax of 12.17 ± 2.08 ng/mL after single administration of CBD (dose: 3 mg/kg). AUC0–12 h showed dose proportionality, increase for Cmax leveled off at higher doses. Following multiple doses, the CBD terminal half-life was 161.29 ± 43.65 h in serum. Rss was 4.45 ± 1.04. CBD is extensively metabolized and shows high volumes of tissue distribution with a resulting extended elimination phase. Further investigation of the potential calming and anti-inflammatory effects of CBD are required to determine cut-off values for medication control using the calculated Rss

    Nanoporous Gold: From Structure Evolution to Functional Properties in Catalysis and Electrochemistry

    Nanoporous gold (NPG) is characterized by a bicontinuous network of nanometer-sized metallic struts and interconnected pores formed spontaneously by oxidative dissolution of the less noble element from gold alloys. The resulting material exhibits decent catalytic activity for low-temperature, aerobic total as well as partial oxidation reactions, the oxidative coupling of methanol to methyl formate being the prototypical example. This review not only provides a critical discussion of ways to tune the morphology and composition of this material and its implication for catalysis and electrocatalysis, but will also exemplarily review the current mechanistic understanding of the partial oxidation of methanol using information from quantum chemical studies, model studies on single-crystal surfaces, gas phase catalysis, aerobic liquid phase oxidation, and electrocatalysis. In this respect, a particular focus will be on mechanistic aspects not well understood, yet. Apart from the mechanistic aspects of catalysis, best practice examples with respect to material preparation and characterization will be discussed. These can improve the reproducibility of the materials property such as the catalytic activity and selectivity as well as the scope of reactions being identified as the main challenges for a broader application of NPG in target-oriented organic synthesis

    Resistive Switching Mechanisms on TaOx and SrRuO3 Thin-Film Surfaces Probed by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

    The local electronic properties of tantalum oxide (TaO[subscript x], 2 ≤ x ≤ 2.5) and strontium ruthenate (SrRuO[subscript 3]) thin-film surfaces were studied under the influence of electric fields induced by a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip. The switching between different redox states in both oxides is achieved without the need for physical electrical contact by controlling the magnitude and polarity of the applied voltage between the STM tip and the sample surface. We demonstrate for TaO[subscript x] films that two switching mechanisms operate. Reduced tantalum oxide shows resistive switching due to the formation of metallic Ta, but partial oxidation of the samples changes the switching mechanism to one mediated mainly by oxygen vacancies. For SrRuO[subscript 3], we found that the switching mechanism depends on the polarity of the applied voltage and involves formation, annihilation, and migration of oxygen vacancies. Although TaO[subscript x] and SrRuO[subscript 3] differ significantly in their electronic and structural properties, the resistive switching mechanisms could be elaborated based on STM measurements, proving the general capability of this method for studying resistive switching phenomena in different classes of transition metal oxides.National Science Foundation (U.S.).     Proton beam therapy for pediatric tumors of the central nervous system — experiences of clinical outcome and feasibility from the KiProReg Study

    Simple Summary Radiation therapy is an important cornerstone of the treatment of many different types of brain tumors occurring in childhood. Proton beam therapy offers the opportunity to reduce doses outside of the target volume due to its physical characteristics. By sparing a large volume of the brain from radiation doses, proton beam therapy aims at reducing long-term side effects and preserving cognitive function. Our study aims at better understanding side effects and therefore contributing to better treatment decisions in this vulnerable group of patients. Therefore, the study analyses outcome and side effects including imaging changes in a large cohort of children with brain tumors from a prospective registry. Abstract As radiotherapy is an important part of the treatment in a variety of pediatric tumors of the central nervous system (CNS), proton beam therapy (PBT) plays an evolving role due to its potential benefits attributable to the unique dose distribution, with the possibility to deliver high doses to the target volume while sparing surrounding tissue. Children receiving PBT for an intracranial tumor between August 2013 and October 2017 were enrolled in the prospective registry study KiProReg. Patient’s clinical data including treatment, outcome, and follow-up were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Kaplan–Meier, and Cox regression analysis. Adverse events were scored according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) 4.0 before, during, and after PBT. Written reports of follow-up imaging were screened for newly emerged evidence of imaging changes, according to a list of predefined keywords for the first 14 months after PBT. Two hundred and ninety-four patients were enrolled in this study. The 3-year overall survival of the whole cohort was 82.7%, 3-year progression-free survival was 67.3%, and 3-year local control was 79.5%. Seventeen patients developed grade 3 adverse events of the CNS during long-term follow-up (new adverse event n = 7; deterioration n = 10). Two patients developed vision loss (CTCAE 4°). This analysis demonstrates good general outcomes after PBT

    Experimental consolidation and absolute measurement of the nat C(p,x)11 C nuclear activation cross section at 100 MeV for particle therapy physics

    The natC(p,x)11C reaction has been discussed in detail in the past [EXFOR database, Otuka et al. (Nuclear Data Sheets 120:272–276, 2014)]. However, measured activation cross sections by independent experiments are up to 15% apart. The aim of this study is to investigate underlying reasons for these observed discrepancies between different experiments and to determine a new consensus reference cross section at 100 MeV. Therefore, the experimental methods described in the two recent publications [Horst et al. (Phys Med Biol https://doi.org/10.1088/1361-6560/ab4511 [Titel anhand dieser DOI in Citavi-Projekt übernehmen] , 2019) and Bäcker et al. (Nuclear Instrum Methods Phys Res B 454:50–55, 2019)] are compared in detail and all experimental parameters are investigated for their impact on the results. For this purpose, a series of new experiments is performed. With the results of the experiments a new reference cross section of (68±3) mb is derived at (97±3) MeV proton energy. This value combined with the reliably measured excitation function could provide accurate cross section values for the energy region of proton therapy. Because of the well-known gamma-ray spectrometer used and the well-defined beam characteristics of the treatment machine at the proton therapy center, the experimental uncertainties on the absolute cross section could be reduced to 3%. Additionally, this setup is compared to the in-beam measurement setup from the second study presented in the literature (Horst et al. 2019).     Behavioral observations, heart rate and heart rate variability in horses following oral administration of a cannabidiol containing paste in three escalating doses (part 1/2)

    Cannabidiol (CBD) products have been proposed to exert stress- and anxiety-relieving effects in animals. Despite the increasing popularity of CBD for veterinary use, the available research detailing the effects of CBD in horses is limited. The aim of this study (part 1 of 2) was to analyze stress parameters via behavioral observations and heart rate monitoring in healthy horses following single oral administration of a CBD containing paste in different doses. Study products were two pastes for oral administration, one containing CBD and one containing no active ingredient. Pastes were applied as single administrations in consecutive trials with escalating dosages (doses: 0.2, 1.0, 3.0 mg CBD/kg) to a treatment (trial 1: n = 3, trial 2: n = 3, trial 3: n = 5 horses) and a control group (trial 1: n = 3, trial 2: n = 3, trial 3: n = 6 horses) with minimum wash-out periods of seven days in between. Behavioral parameters were evaluated using video recordings to score the levels of sedation including the horses' reactions to acoustic and visual stimuli. Facial expression was assessed using photographs. Evaluation was based on the previously described facial sedation scale for horses (FaceSed) and the Horse Grimace Scale. For baseline values, identical observations were recorded on the day before each paste administration. Both paste administration and behavioral evaluation were performed double blinded. Cardiac beat-to-beat (R-R) intervals were continuously recorded throughout the trial and assessed using heart rate and heart rate variability parameters. Statistical analysis included comparison between treatment and control group over escalating doses and time points using linear mixed models. The CBD paste was well tolerated, and no side effects were observed. Analysis of sedation scores and facial expressions did not indicate significant differences between treatment and control group over the escalating doses. The heart rate was neither reduced, nor were significant changes in heart rate variability observed compared to the control group. Main limitation of this study is the small sample size. Further research is required to determine adequate doses and indications for the use of CBD products in horses

    Das Themenheft Digitale Teilhabe beschäftigt sich zentral mit den Potentialen der Nutzung der neuen Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien durch benachteiligte Menschen. Im Leitartikel wird der Versuch unternommen, mögliche theoretische Anknüpfungspunkte und Forschungsfragen für weitere Studien- und Forschungsarbeiten in dem noch jungen Themenfeld der Digitalen Teilhabe zu identifizieren. Hierzu wird zunächst das zugrunde liegende Verständnis von Behinderung/Benachteiligung diskutiert und inklusive (Medien-)Bildung als Teil der Persönlichkeitsbildung skizziert. In verschiedenen Diskursen bzw. Disziplinen werden dann theoretische Anknüpfungspunkte für weitere Forschungsarbeiten benannt. Die Idee für das Themenheft ist im Rahmen des Projekts "Begleitforschung im PIKSL-Labor" des Zentrums für Planung und Evaluation Sozialer Dienste der Uni Siegen (ZPE) entstanden. Das PIKSL-Projekt zielt darauf ab, Menschen mit Behinderungen moderne Kommunikationstechnologien zugänglich zu machen, um ihnen Teilhabemöglichkeiten zu erleichtern und zugleich die personale Abhängigkeit von professioneller Unterstützung zu reduzieren. Der inter- und transdisziplinäre Ansatz von PIKSL wird durch die Vielfalt der Artikel in dem Heft deutlich: Digitale Teilhabe wird nicht alleine aus (medien-)pädagogischer bzw. sozialwissenschaftlicher Perspektive betrachtet. Die Besonderheit liegt in der Kooperation unterschiedlicher Disziplinen wie Soziale Arbeit, Kunst und Webdesign

    Behavioral observations, heart rate and cortisol monitoring in horses following multiple oral administrations of a cannabidiol containing paste (part 2/2)

    As a remedy against stress and anxiety, cannabidiol (CBD) products are of increasing interest in veterinary medicine. Limited data is available describing the actual effectiveness of CBD in horses. The aim of this study (part 2 of 2) was to analyze stress parameters via behavioral observation, heart rate monitoring and assessment of blood and saliva cortisol levels in healthy horses treated repeatedly with a CBD containing paste. Twelve horses were randomly assigned to a treatment or a control group. Two pastes were orally administered in a double-blinded study design, one paste containing CBD and one paste without active ingredient. Both pastes were administered twice daily over 15 days (dose: 3 mg CBD/kg). Behavioral observations were conducted daily using a sedation score and a rating of facial expressions, based on the previously described facial sedation scale for horses (FaceSed) and the Horse Grimace Scale. Blood and saliva samples were obtained regularly to determine cortisol levels throughout the study. Cortisol levels were analyzed by means of liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). Behavioral observations and cortisol levels were compared between groups. Prior to paste administration, a novel object test was performed and the horses’ reaction to loading on a trailer was recorded. Both tests were repeated after 13 days of paste application. Movement patterns such as different gaits during the novel object test were evaluated and an ethogram was designed to assess exhibited behavioral traits. Cardiac beat-to-beat (R-R) intervals were recorded throughout and evaluated using heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) parameters. Blood and saliva samples for cortisol analysis were taken before and after the tests. Daily behavioral observations and cortisol levels did not differ between the treatment and the control group. Similarly, analysis of movement patterns, HR, HRV and cortisol levels during the novel object test and trailer test did not identify significant differences between the groups. Regularly administered oral CBD (3 mg/kg BID over 15 days) had no statistically significant effect on behavioral observations, cortisol levels, HR and HRV in horses. Further research is required to establish adequate doses and indications for the use of CBD in horses
