Searches for vector-like quarks and ttˉt\bar{t} resonances with the ATLAS detector

Searches for vector-like quarks and ttˉt\bar{t} resonances are performed with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using an integrated luminosity of 14.3~fb−1^{-1} of proton-proton collisions recorded in 2012 at a center-of-mass energy of s=\sqrt{s} = 8~TeV. Several final states have been exploited to carry out these searches such as lepton plus jets and opposite and same-sign dilepton final states. No significant excess of events above the Standard Model expectation is observed, and upper limits at 95%\% CL are derived for vector-like quarks of various masses in a two-dimensional plane of branching ratios, and for ttˉt\bar{t} resonances in two benchmark models, a topcolor leptophobic Zâ€ČZ' and a Kaluza-Klein gluon.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, Proceedings of The Second Annual Conference on Large Hadron Collider Physics, Columbia University, New York, U.S.A, June 2-7, 201

Embodying feminist research: learning from action research, political practices, diffractions and collective knowledge.

In the past three decades, feminists and critical theorists have discussed and argued the importance of deconstructing and problematizing social science research methodology in order to question normalized hierarchies concerning the production of knowledge and the status of truth claims. Nevertheless, often, these ideas have basically remained theoretical propositions not embodied in research practices. In fact there is very little published discussion about the difficulties and limits of their practical application. In this paper we introduce some interconnected reflections starting from two different but related experiences of embodying 'feminist activist research'. Our aim is to emphasise the importance of attending to process, making mistakes and learning during fieldwork, as well as experimenting with personalized forms of analysis, such as the construction of narratives and the story-telling process

The higher topological complexity of subcomplexes of products of spheres---and related polyhedral product spaces

We construct "higher" motion planners for automated systems whose space of states are homotopy equivalent to a polyhedral product space Z(K,{(Ski,⋆)})Z(K,\{(S^{k_i},\star)\}), e.g. robot arms with restrictions on the possible combinations of simultaneously moving nodes. Our construction is shown to be optimal by explicit cohomology calculations. The higher topological complexity of other families of polyhedral product spaces is also determined.Comment: 30 pages. This second version of the paper extends the results of the first version to the case of polyhedral product spaces Z(K,{(Ski,⋆)})Z(K,\{(S^{k_i},\star)\}) where no restriction is assumed on the sphere dimensions $k_i

QUALITATIVE ANSWERING SURVEYS AND SOFT COMPUTING

In this work, we reflect on some questions about the measurement problem in economics and, especially, their relationship with the scientific method. Statistical sources frequently used by economists contain qualitative information obtained from verbal expressions of individuals by means of surveys, and we discuss the reasons why it would be more adequately analyzed with soft methods than with traditional ones. Some comments on the most commonly applied techniques in the analysis of these types of data with verbal answers are followed by our proposal to compute with words. In our view, an alternative use of the well known Income Evaluation Question seems especially suggestive for a computing with words approach, since it would facilitate an empirical estimation of the corresponding linguistic variable adjectives. A new treatment of the information contained in such surveys would avoid some questions incorporated in the so called Leyden approach that do not fit to the actual world.Computing with words, Leyden approach, qualitative answering surveys, fuzzy logic

Retrospective comparative study of bone loss in implants with and without immediate loading in the Egas Moniz university clinic

To evaluate bone loss after three years in implants placed at the implantology consult at the Egas Moniz University Clinic, relating bone loss to the type of loading (conventional or immediate load). A comparative and retrospective study, performed on a sample of 65 implants, placed in 24 of 327 patients, who attended the implantology consult at the Egas Moniz University Clinic in 2015, representing 7.3% of the study population through the measurement of distance between implant platform and bone using radiographs. Three years after implant placement with and without immediate loading there is statistically significant bone loss mesially and distally. It was found that when compared bone loss in loaded vs unloaded mesially and distally implants, there were no statistically significant differences. The bone loss of the unloaded implants was compared three years after being placed, with the bone level of the loaded implants also three years later. No significant difference was found. Although no statistically significant differences were found between bone loss in loaded implants vs unloaded mesially and distally, as it is supported by the literature, it was possible to conclude that there was, in fact, a statistically significant bone loss, mesially and distally, three years after implant placement with and without immediate loading. This may be due to poor oral hygiene, a history of periodontitis, smoking and peri-implantitis.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Evaluation of mathematical indices as tools for distinguishing ÎČ-thalassemia trait from iron deficiency anemia in Portuguese females with microcytic anemia

Microcytic anemia is a common condition frequently caused by iron deficiency anemia (IDA) or ÎČ-thalassemia trait (BTT). Some mathematical indices have been described as fast and inexpensive tools for distinguishing these two conditions. This approach is very useful in mass screening programs especially in countries with limited resources. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of 13 distinct indices: RBC, England&Fraser, Mentzer, Srivastava, Shine&Lal, RDW, Ricerca, Jayabose (RDWI), Green&King (G&K), MDHL, MCHD, Sirdah and Ensani. We investigated 102 adult Portuguese female, presenting anemia (HbA; c.92+6T>C; c.92+110G>A or c.1188C>T) and 51 IDA, being assured that no individual had simultaneously the two conditions. To determine the performance of the indices, sensitivity, specificity, Youden index (YI) and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were calculated. Due to the high values of AUC (Area Under the Curve) from ROC analysis, a cutoff of 0.70 for the YI was established in order to determine the best formulas. We find that the 3 best performing indices to differentiate the 2 groups were RBC (YI=0.71; AUC=0.902), RDWI (YI=0.84; AUC=0.973) and G&K (YI=0.82; AUC=0.972). Our results suggest a similarity with other Mediterranean countries such as Spain and Greece, where G&K and RDWI also performed above our set cutoff. The same is observed in Brazil probably due to its Portuguese ancestry. We conclude that aiming to diagnosis the condition underlying a microcytic anemia in a female population, there is value in using this method to recognize the individuals suspected of BTT and forward them for HbA2 measurement or HBB molecular test. In the future, a robust group of male patients should be added to the analysis in order to extrapolate which of these indices would best apply to the whole adult Portuguese population. This work was partially funded by INSA_2012DGH720 and ISAMBinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
