Electron correlation in FeSe superconductor studied by bulk-sensitive photoemission spectroscopy

We have investigated the electronic structures of recently discovered superconductor FeSe by soft-x-ray and hard-x-ray photoemission spectroscopy with high bulk sensitivity. The large Fe 3d spectral weight is located in the vicinity of the Fermi level (EF), which is demonstrated to be a coherent quasi-particle peak. Compared with the results of the band structure calculation with local-density approximation, Fe 3d band narrowing and the energy shift of the band toward EF are found, suggesting an importance of the electron correlation effect in FeSe. The self energy correction provides the larger mass enhancement value (Z^-1=3.6) than in Fe-As superconductors and enables us to separate a incoherent part from the spectrum. These features are quite consistent with the results of recent dynamical mean-field calculations, in which the incoherent part is attributed to the lower Hubbard band.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 1 talbl

Predicting effects of climate change on productivity and persistence of forest trees

Global climate change increases uncertainty in sustained functioning of forest ecosystems. Forest canopies are a key link between terrestrial ecosystems, the atmosphere, and climate. Here, we introduce research presented at the 66th meeting of the Ecological Society of Japan in the symposium “Structure and function of forest canopies under climate change.” Old-growth forest carbon stores are the largest and may be the most vulnerable to climate change as the balance between sequestration and emission could easily be tipped. Detailed structural analysis of individual large, old trees shows they are allocating wood to the trunk and crown in patterns that cannot be deduced from ground, thus can be used to more accurately quantify total forest carbon and sequestration. Slowly migrating species sensitive to novel climatic conditions will have to acclimate at the individual level. Accounting for physiological responses of trees to climate change will improve predictions of future species distributions and subsequent functioning of forest ecosystems. Field experiments manipulating temperature and precipitation show how trees compensate physiologically to mitigate for higher temperatures and drought. However, it is difficult to measure acclimation responses over long timeframes. Intraindividual trait variation is proposed as an indicator of acclimation potential of trees to future conditions and suggests that acclimation potential may vary among regional populations within a species. Integrating whole-tree structural data with physiological data offers a promising avenue for understanding how trees will respond to climatic shifts

Cord blood transplantation (CBT) from an unrelated donor is recognized as one of the major treatment modalities in allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) for children with hematologic malignancies. We analyzed the clinical outcomes of CBT for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in Japan and identified the risk factors for the transplant outcomes. From 1997 to 2006, 332 children with ALL underwent CBT from unrelated donors, 270 of which had no prior transplant. Their disease statuses at transplant were first complete remission (CR) (n = 120), second CR (n = 71), and more advanced stages (n = 75). As preconditioning for SCT, total body irradiation (TBI) was given to 194 patients and, for the prophylaxis of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), methotrexate (MTX) was given to 159 patients. The cumulative incidents of neutrophil and platelet recovery (>20 K) were 88.5% and 78.4%, respectively. The incidents of grade II-IV, III-IV acute GVHD (aGVHD), and chronic GVHD (cGVHD) were 45.6%, 20.4%, and 19.2%, respectively, and treatment-related mortality was 22.6%. The 5-year event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) at CR1, CR2, and advanced status were 47.4%, 45.5%, 15.0%, and 63.7%, 59.7%, and 20.7%, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that MTX with calcineurin inhibitor (CNI) was associated with decreased incidence of grade II-IV GVHD (CNI alone: hazard ratio [HR] = 1.74, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.06-2.83, P = .027; CNI + prednisolone (PSL), HR = 1.61, 95% CI = 1.03-2.50, P = .036), III-IV aGVHD (CNI alone: HR = 3.02, 95% CI = 1.55-5.91, P = 0.001; CNI + PSL, HR = 1.89, 95% CI = 0.93-3.83, P = .078), or cGVHD (CNI alone: HR = 1.78, 95% CI = 0.83-3.82, P = .143; CNI + PSL, HR = 2.44, 95% CI = 1.24-4.82, P = .01), compared with CNI alone or CNI + PSL. At an advanced stage of disease, GVHD prophylaxis with MTX + CNI is associated with improved OS compared with CNI alone (CNI alone: HR = 3.20, 95% CI = 1.43-7.15, P = .005; CNI + PSL, HR = 1.47, CI = 0.67-3.20, P = .332). Our retrospective study showed that CBT for children with ALL is feasible and GVHD prophylaxis with MTX + CNI is associated with significant favorable outcomes in prevention of aGVHD and cGVHD as well as survival advantage in advanced cases

Increasing asthma prevalence is a major problem in Western countries. Various factors, such as allergic sensitization to indoor allergens, change in incidence in infectious diseases, and increase of air pollutants, are considered to be possible factors for increasing prevalence. Inhaled corticosteroids play an important role in asthma treatment, and its impact on asthma morbidity and mortality has already been established. In addition, recent attention has been focused on molecular targeted therapy in the treatment of bronchial asthma. Promising results of anti-IgE antibody are reported in several clinical trials and anti-CD23 antibody is now introduced in clinical trials

Direct Visualization of Antigen-specific CD8+T Cells during the Primary Immune Response to Epstein-Barr Virus In Vivo

Primary infection with virus can stimulate a vigorous cytotoxic T cell response. The magnitude of the antigen-specific component versus the bystander component of a primary T cell response remains controversial. In this study, we have used tetrameric major histocompatibility complex–peptide complexes to directly visualize antigen-specific cluster of differentration (CD)8+ T cells during the primary immune response to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection in humans. We show that massive expansion of activated, antigen-specific T cells occurs during the primary response to this virus. In one individual, T cells specific for a single EBV epitope comprised 44% of the total CD8+ T cells within peripheral blood. The majority of the antigen-specific cells had an activated/memory phenotype, with expression of human histocompatibility leukocyte antigen (HLA) DR, CD38, and CD45RO, downregulation of CD62 leukocyte (CD62L), and low levels of expression of CD45RA. After recovery from AIM, the frequency of antigen-specific T cells fell in most donors studied, although populations of antigen-specific cells continued to be easily detectable for at least 3 yr

Earlier studies have shown that bone marrow-derived mononuclear cell(BM-MNC)implantation induces therapeutic angiogenesis in patients with peripheral arterial disease(PAD). However, the invasiveness of bone marrow collection limits clinical application of BM-MNC implantation. We performed peripheral blood-derived mononuclear cell(PB-MNC)implantation in ischemic limbs of five patients with PAD. After implantation, clinical symptoms such as rest pain and numbness were relieved in four patients. Maximal walking distance markedly increased from 160 m to 915 m in one patient. Non-healing ulcers were cured after repeated cell implantation in one patient with Burger disease. There was no adverse event. These findings suggest that PB-MNC implantation is a safe and noninvasive strategy for therapeutic angiogenesis for the treatment of severe PAD

With the recognition that airway inflammation is present even in patients with mild bronchial asthma, therapy with inhaled corticosteroids is now indicated in various stages of patients. In the present article, we retrospectively examined the prescriptions for inhaled corticosteroids and other drugs for the treatment of outpatients with bronchial asthma at Tokushima University Hospital. We also analyzed asthma control in these patients, in terms of the incidence of emergency consultations and hospitalizations due to asthma exacerbations. To analyze the recent trend, the patients observed from 1998 to 2000 (recent years) were included, and for control purpose, those in 1990 and 1991 (earlier years) were also included. The percentage of patients treated with inhaled corticosteroids remarkably increased in recent years (mean 81.3%) compared to earlier years (mean 23.5%). In contrast, the usage of oral corticosteroids, oral xanthine derivatives, β2-adrenergic receptor agonists and anti-allergic agents tended to decrease in the 10 years period. After the introduction in 1995, considerable patients up to 25% have been treated with anti-leukotrienes. Emergency consultations decreased in recent years (mean 0.18/patient/year) compared to earlier years (mean 0.79/patient/year). Emergency hospitalizations also decreased in recent years (mean 0.043/patient/year) compared to earlier years (mean 0.23/patient/year).In the present study, spread of inhaled corticosteroid therapy and decline in incidence of emergency consultation and hospitalization were simultaneously observed at Tokushima University Hospital, and the former has, at least in part, a contribution to the latter
