Temporal reasoning for intuitive specification of context-awareness

    Get PDF
One of the most important challenges of the creation of intelligent environments is the specifications of what intelligent behaviours the system will exhibit. The processing of these situations can be computationally demanding. We report on the advances of the specification of a rule-based language which allows for the natural expression of situations of interest as those which occur on Intelligent Environments. The language focuses on quasi real-time situations and includes new temporal operators which allow a natural reference to time instants and to intervals. We explained how the system is implemented and how the system was validated within a Smart Office scenario

User behavior shift detection in ambient assisted living environments

Identifying users' frequent behaviors is considered a key step to achieving real, intelligent environments that support people in their daily lives. These patterns can be used in many different applications. An algorithm that compares current behaviors of users with previously discovered frequent behaviors has been developed. In addition, it identifies the differences between both behaviors. Identified shifts can be used not only to adapt frequent behaviors, but also shifts may indicate initial signs of some diseases linked to behavioral modifications, such as depression or Alzheimer’s. The algorithm was validated using datasets collected from smart apartments where five different ADLs (Activities of Daily Living) were recognized. It was able to identify all shifts from frequent behaviors, as well as identifying necessary modifications in all cases

A survey on the evolution of the notion of context-awareness

The notion of Context has been considered for a long time in different areas of Computer Science. This article considers the use of context-based reasoning from the earlier perspective of AI as well as the newer developments in Ubiquitous Computing. Both communities have been somehow interested in the potential of context-reasoning to support real-time meaningful reactions from systems. We explain how the concept evolved in each of these different approaches. We found initially each of them considered this topic quite independently and separated from each other, however latest developments have started to show signs of cross-fertilization amongst these areas. The aim of our survey is to provide an understanding on the way context and context-reasoning were approached, to show that work in each area is complementary, and to highlight there are positive synergies arising amongst them. The overarching goal of this article is to encourage further and longer-term synergies between those interested in further understanding and using context-based reasoning

Discovering frequent user-environment interactions in intelligent environments

    Get PDF
Intelligent Environments are expected to act proactively, anticipating the user's needs and preferences. To do that, the environment must somehow obtain knowledge of those need and preferences, but unlike current computing systems, in Intelligent Environments the user ideally should be released from the burden of providing information or programming any device as much as possible. Therefore, automated learning of a user's most common behaviors becomes an important step towards allowing an environment to provide highly personalized services. In this paper we present a system that takes information collected by sensors as a starting point, and then discovers frequent relationships between actions carried out by the user. The algorithm developed to discover such patterns is supported by a language to represent those patterns and a system of interaction which provides the user the option to fine tune their preferences in a natural way, just by speaking to the system

Effect of a ketogenic diet on the expression of potassium channels controlling neuronal excitability

    Get PDF
The ketogenic diet (KD) contains a high amount of fat and very low carbohydrates which leads to ketone bodies (KB) synthesis as an energy source. In our laboratory, we elaborated a KD (70% fat, 25% proteins, <1% carbohydrates) to evaluate if KB modify the gene expression of Kv channels that regulate neuronal excitability, and the social behavior. KD was administered to P21 C57BL/6 male mice after weaning for 3 weeks with ad libitum intake. We kept a control group (CG) with normal diet. The blood KB and glucose levels were measured on days (D) 0, D7, D14 and D21. After one week of KD administration, the animals reached the highest amount of blood KB (2.81 ± 0.69 mmol/L) while the CG remained at 0.71 ± 0.13 mmol/L. KB levels in the CG did not change during the assay while decreased to 1.44 ± 0.43 mmol/L in the KD group. The body weight of KD mice was 25% lower than CG up to D14 reaching similar values thereafter. Using qPCR, we analyzed the expression of Kcnq2-5 mRNA in different brain regions. We found a significant increase of Kcnq3 in cerebellum and Kcnq4 in cortex. We performed behavioral tests after 3 weeks of KD consumption. The self-grooming behavior and thigmotaxis as well as the sociability and the social novelty presented no differences between KD group and CG. Our results suggest that KB modify Kcnq expression, then could modulate neuronal excitability, and may contribute to explaining the clinical effects of KD in refractory epilepsy and autism spectrum disordersFil: Stupniki, Sofia. Chenopodium album is a very polymorphic, cosmopolitan, annual herb that grows spontaneously in modified soils in wasteland in the outlying urban zones of Bahía Blanca. In this city, the flowering period is mainly during February and March, which coincides with the highest concentrations of this pollen type in the atmosphere of the city. The objective of this study was to characterize the pollen grains of Chenopodium album, both morphologically and immunochemically, that were obtained from three different zones in the urban area of Bahía Blanca. Samples were collected from the three separate zones in the city that were far apart. The structure and morphology of the grains were analyzed using light and electron microscopy. The protein and antigenic profiles were studied with Tricine-SDS-PAGE and western blot with a polyclonal rabbit serum, respectively. The morphological analysis showed significant differences in relation to the diameters of the pollen grains in one of the studied areas. Differences in the protein expression were seen for the same area although the antigenic profile was conserved. The variations in the morphology and the protein profile may be caused by the effect of environmental conditions on the pollen, and the presence of urban contaminants from vehicular traffic.Fil: Bianchimano, Andrea Susana.
