    Get PDF
This paper investigates the reading practices of forty-five second year EFL Yemeni undergraduate students using the Four Resources Model of multiliteracy practices. The Four Resources Model of multiliteracy practices organizes reading practices into four key practices: code breaking, text participating, text uses and text analysing levels. Quantitative and qualitative methods, designed based on the Four Resources Model constructs, were used to collect data from a sample of students studying English as a Foreign Language at a university in Yemen. Quantitative data was collected through a questionnaire, while qualitative data was gathered using semi-structured interviews guided by the research objectives. The findings reveal that Yemeni students were medium users of the code breaker and text user practices whereas the meaning making and text analysis practices were reported to be used in low usage. On the whole, these early findings suggest that the reading practices and reading abilities of the Yemeni students are still limited even at the tertiary level and have not developed fully with regard to reading in English. This paper reports in detail, the use of the Four Resources Model as a tool to determine reading efficacy while examining the aforementioned findings. Discussion is put forward on the implications for teaching of reading and its approaches in a Yemeni context, especially in view of the students‟ reading needs at the tertiary level in Yemen

    Railway Wheel Wear Analysis

    Get PDF
Wear due to wheel-rail critically influences railway operations. Wear of the wheel alters its profile which compromises the vehicle stability and increases the derailment risk. Past researches have focused on wear prediction due to wheel-rail interaction that crucial for different aspects such as running stability, passenger safety, comfort, life cycle optimization, and maintenance schedule. This research aims to provide an analysis of the comparison wear of the wheel and to analyze and compare the axle against wear rate. The data of wheel wear were measured by using the Calipri device. It is a wheel measurement device that is a highly precise measurement for predictive maintenance. The data obtained were analyzed deeply in order to see the pattern of wear rate of the wheel. The analysis shows that the wear rate increase in a smaller radius of the track curve due to the curve effect that happens because of friction between the wheels and the track. The lubrication system offers a potentially cost-effective means to reduce the wear rate of the wheels thus enhance rail wheels' life

    Get PDF
Ceramics is one of the most important merchandise in the past. In Sabah, many trade ceramic wares were found in archaeological sites. The study of trade ceramics in Sabah and its distribution enables the types of ceramic wares were identified and their distribution by region in Sabah. Therefore, in order to achieve this objective, whole sites with the imported ceramic in Sabah has been divided into the following four main areas including east, west, north and interior of Sabah. Results from the analysis showed that most of ceramics that were found came from China, Europe, Netherlands, Vietnam and Thailand. While the age of ceramics is from the Song dynasty (10-13 century AD), Yuan (13-14 century AD), Ming (14 -17 century AD) and Ching (17-20 century AD), Thailand (14-15 century AD), Vietnam (14-15 century AD), Europe and the Netherlands (19-20 century AD). All of this discovery shows that the distribution of the ceramic sites may have been connected with other countries via trading activities especially in the coastal areas in Saba

Decomposition of productivity growth of the Malaysian palm oil mill sector

    Get PDF
This study investigates total factor productivity (TFP) growth in the Malaysian palm oil mill sector over the period 2005-2010, using a Stochastic Frontier Approach (SFA) model. TFP growth was decomposed into three components, namely, technical efficiency (TE), technical progress (TP) and scale components (SEC). The empirical results show that productivity growth was driven mainly by TE for all palm oil mills, followed by TP. However, a change in the scale components had a negative effect on productivity growth. Overall, the study suggests that there are opportunities to improve productivity growth in the Malaysian palm oil mill sector

Modulation of Nrf2/Keap1 pathway by dietary phytochemicals

    Get PDF
Nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2), also known as NFE2L2, has emerged as a transcription factor that plays a crucial role in cellular protection against free radical damage and reduce the incidence of the radical derived degenerative diseases such as cancer. Nrf2 is a basic leucine zipper transcription factor that binds to ARE leading to induction of a verity of ARE driven detoxification and antioxidant genes. In basal conditions, Nrf2 is sequestered in the cytoplasm by an inhibitory partner the cytoskeletal anchoring protein Kelch-like ECH associated protein-1 (Keap1) through extensive hydrogen bonds. Inducers dissociate this complex, allowing Nrf2 to translocate to the nucleus. A number of studies have elucidated that nutritional compounds can modulate the activation of Nrf2/Keap1 system. This review aims to discuss some of the key nutritional compounds that enhance the activation of Nrf2, with consequent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory defensive effects

Takaful (Islamic insurance) benefit: ownership and distribution issues in Malaysia

    Get PDF
This paper aims at investigating the ownership of the Takaful benefit and the issues of hibah in nomination. The focus is made solely on the Family takāful because this type of policy is singularly related to death. In this regard, the question is raised as whether the money paid by the takāful operator on the death of the participant (death benefit) before the policy matures constitutes the participant’s estate or not, and secondly over the validity of making a conditional hibah of that takaful policy to a nominee as a sole beneficiar

    Get PDF
This research is focusing on multibody dynamics modeling data and parameter comparison. The comfort and stability of railway vehicle suspension can be measured by using Ride Index Machine and other sensors. Complete model of EMU82 from KTMB is adapted to multibody software, ADAMS/Rail. With ADAMS/Rail, the behavior and characteristic of each suspension element can be determined. The accuracy of the simulation model is verified by comparing the result of body roll angle in Adams/Rail and the actual test. As for the experiment, certain test track will be chosen and simulated in ADAMS/Rail. The selection of track is based on the design and curvature characteristic. In experiment, data of roll angle and lateral acceleration are necessary. For that purpose selected sensors such as tri-axis accelerometer and gyro will be used. The running performance of the KTMB EMU82 suspension will be gathered from the simulation
