An ultrafast 1 x M all-optical WDM packet-switched router based on the PPM header address

    Get PDF
This paper presents an all-optical 1 x M WDM router architecture for packet routing at multiple wavelengths simultaneously, with no wavelength conversion modules. The packet header address adopted is based on the pulse position modulation (PPM) format, thus enabling the use of only a singlebitwise optical AND gate for fast header address correlation. It offers multicast as well as broadcast capabilities. It is shown that a high speed packet routing at 160 Gb/s can be achieved with a low channel crosstalk (CXT) of ~ -27 dB at a channel spacing of greater than 0.4 THz and a demultiplexer bandwidth of 500 GHz

    Kinematic Self-Similar Plane Symmetric Solutions

This paper is devoted to classify the most general plane symmetric spacetimes according to kinematic self-similar perfect fluid and dust solutions. We provide a classification of the kinematic self-similarity of the first, second, zeroth and infinite kinds with different equations of state, where the self-similar vector is not only tilted but also orthogonal and parallel to the fluid flow. This scheme of classification yields twenty four plane symmetric kinematic self-similar solutions. Some of these solutions turn out to be vacuum. These solutions can be matched with the already classified plane symmetric solutions under particular coordinate transformations. As a result, these reduce to sixteen independent plane symmetric kinematic self-similar solutions.Comment: 29 pages, accepted for publication in Classical Quantum Gravit

Interdependence of ICD Rates in Paired Quantum Dots on Geometry

    Get PDF
Using state of the art antisymmetrized multiconfiguration time dependent Hartree MCTDH electron dynamics calculations we study the interdependence of the intermolecular Coulombic decay ICD process on the geometric parameters of a doubly charged paired quantum dot PQD model system in the framework of the effective mass approximation EMA . We find that ICD displays a maximum rate for a certain geometry of the electron emitting quantum dot, which is simultaneously dependent on both the distance between the quantum dots as well as the photon absorbing quantum dot s geometry. The rate maximum is shown to be caused by the competing effects of polarization of electron density and Coulomb repulsion. The ICD rate maximized PQD geometry in GaAs QDs yields a decay time of 102.39 ps. It is given by two vertically aligned cylindrical QDs with radii of 14.42 nm separated by 86.62 nm. The photon absorbing QD then has a height of 46.59 nm and the electron emitting QD a height of 16.33 n

Effective Fokker-Planck Equation for Birhythmic Modified van der Pol Oscillator

We present an explicit solution based on the phase-amplitude approximation of the Fokker-Planck equation associated with the Langevin equation of the birhythmic modified van der Pol system. The solution enables us to derive probability distributions analytically as well as the activation energies associated to switching between the coexisting different attractors that characterize the birhythmic system. Comparing analytical and numerical results we find good agreement when the frequencies of both attractors are equal, while the predictions of the analytic estimates deteriorate when the two frequencies depart. Under the effect of noise the two states that characterize the birhythmic system can merge, inasmuch as the parameter plane of the birhythmic solutions is found to shrink when the noise intensity increases. The solution of the Fokker-Planck equation shows that in the birhythmic region, the two attractors are characterized by very different probabilities of finding the system in such a state. The probability becomes comparable only for a narrow range of the control parameters, thus the two limit cycles have properties in close analogy with the thermodynamic phases

In this paper, focuses on how to create a special library of some marketed solar panels in the Orcad-Pspice environment using the design features provided by the founder, we established and implanted in Orcad-Pspice the electric scheme of the solar panels according to their architecture. This makes it possible to model the operation of each panel when it is closed on a resistive load. Also, simulation is used to determine the electric characteristics of these panels according to temperature and solar irradiation. In this paper, focuses on how to create a special library of some marketed solar panels in the Orcad-Pspice environment using the design features provided by the founder, we established and implanted in Orcad-Pspice the electric scheme of the solar panels according to their architecture. Objective: There is a lack of data on the etiology and outcome of pneumothorax among the Pakistani population. Our aim was to review the etiology, clinical course, management and outcome of patients presenting with pneumothorax.PATIENTS AND Methods: All adult cases with pneumothorax admitted to a University Teaching Hospital in Karachi, between January 1992 and June 1996, were reviewed and analyzed. Results: A total of 146 patients were reviewed. Their mean age was 46.3 years (SD +/- 17.8 years) with a male to female ratio of 3.7:1. Secondary pneumothorax was the commonest type seen (45%), followed by traumatic (21%), iatrogenic (18%) and primary (16%). Tuberculosis (47%) and COPD (45%) were most common lung diseases associated with secondary pneumothorax. Pneumothorax secondary to TB presented at an earlier age than that with COPD (49.6 vs. 60.1 years). Similarly, patients with primary pneumothorax were significantly younger than patients with secondary pneumothorax (42.3 vs. 51.7 years). Rib fracture was the most common cause of traumatic pneumothorax. Coronary artery bypass grafting, transthoracic fine needle aspiration and neck vein cannulations were the leading iatrogenic causes. The commonest symptoms of pneumothorax were dyspnea (68%) and chest pain (40%). Most cases (81%) were successfully managed by intercostal tube drainage.CONCLUSION: In our study population, secondary pneumothorax was the commonest variety seen. TB was the commonest cause of secondary pneumothorax, closely followed by COPD. Nearly 40% of pneumothorax were either traumatic or iatrogenic. Intercostal tube drainage remains the treatment of choice for pneumothorax

Comparison of measurements of the outer scale of turbulence by three different techniques

    Get PDF
We have made simultaneous and nearly simultaneous measurements of L0, the outer scale of turbulence, at the Palomar Observatory by using three techniques: angle-of-arrival covariance measurements with the Generalized Seeing Monitor (GSM), differential-image-motion measurements with the adaptive-optics system on the Hale 5-m telescope, and fringe speed measurements with the Palomar Testbed Interferometer (PTI). The three techniques give consistent results, an outer scale of approximately 10-20 m, despite the fact that the spatial scales of the three instruments vary from 1 m for the GSM to 100 m for the PTI
