Multivariate Analaysis of Critical Consciousness on Female University Students in West Java

There are a lot of gender-based discriminations in West Java, however little effort is made to change this condition. Critical Consciousness (CC) can be the answer to this problem. This study aims to examine the influence of teacher political support, parents and peer political support, experience of discrimination, socioemotional adaptation, academic adaptation, and socioeconomic background on CC and its domains. Sample in this study was taken from population of female students at universities in West Java, with a total of 260 respondents. All instruments in this study have been adapted to accommodate specific characteristics of female students in West Java. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test the validity of the construct and multivariate regression analysis was used to analyze the data. There is a significant influence from the variables of academic adaptation, socioeconomic background, teacher political support, life satisfaction, parents and peer political support and experiences of discrimination on CC and its domains with t-value > 1.96. Pedagogical approach from teachers, parents, and peers is important. However, in current society that’s not the only factor, education is still influenced by socioeconomic background, proven by this study that socioeconomic background heavily influenced one of CC domains. The present study evaluated the psychometric properties of a self-report scale for assessing Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) symptoms according to the DSM-5 and ICD-11 among 3270 college/univers ity students (2095 [64.1%] females; age mean 21.6 [3.1] years) from different countries worldwide. Croatian, English, Polish, Portuguese, Serbian, Turkish, and Vietnamese versions of the scale were tested. The study showed that symptoms of IGD could be measured as a single underlying factor among college/university students. A nine itemsymptom scale following DSM-5, and a short four-item scale representing the main ICD-11 symptoms, had sound internal consistency and construct validity. Three symptom-items were found non-invariant across the language samples (i.e., preoccupation with on-line gaming, loss of interests in previous hobbies and entertainment, and the use of gaming to relieve negative moods). This study provides initial evidence for assessing IGD symptoms among college/university students and will hopefully foster further research into gaming addiction in this population worldwide especially with taking into account language/cultural differences.U ovoj studiji su procenjena psihometrijska svojstva skale samoprocene koja je namenjena proceni simptoma poremećaja igranja kompjuterskih igrara na internetu (eng.

Gender Gap in Parental Leave Intentions: Evidence from 37 Countries

Despite global commitments and efforts, a gender-based division of paid and unpaid work persists. To identify how psychological factors, national policies, and the broader sociocultural context contribute to this inequality, we assessed parental-leave intentions in young adults (18–30 years old) planning to have children (N = 13,942; 8,880 identified as women; 5,062 identified as men) across 37 countries that varied in parental-leave policies and societal gender equality. In all countries, women intended to take longer leave than men. National parental-leave policies and women’s political representation partially explained cross-national variations in the gender gap. Gender gaps in leave intentions were paradoxically larger in countries with more gender-egalitarian parental-leave policies (i.e., longer leave available to both fathers and mothers). Interestingly, this cross-national variation in the gender gap was driven by cross-national variations in women’s (rather than men’s) leave intentions. Financially generous leave and gender-egalitarian policies (linked to men’s higher uptake in prior research) were not associated with leave intentions in men. Rather, men’s leave intentions were related to their individual gender attitudes. Leave intentions were inversely related to career ambitions. The potential for existing policies to foster gender equality in paid and unpaid work is discussed

An exploration of the factors that influence smoking amongst Indonesian Pesantren (Islamic boarding school) students and teachers: an ethnographic study

This thesis explores the factors that influence smoking behaviours amongst Indonesian Pesantren (Islamic Boarding Schools) santri (students) and kyai (Islamic Scholar, Teacher, or Leader). Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world and also home to the largest Muslim population in the world. It has the highest male smoking prevalence rates in the world and the highest in Muslim countries. Specifically, it has examined how religious practices, school environments, and personal beliefs affect smoking behaviours. The study adopted an ethnographic approach to data collection in three pesantren; Traditional (Salafiyah), Modern (Khalafiyah) and one that is a combination of both. The thesis documents the findings from semi-structured interviews conducted with 49 participants (students and teachers). Participant observation and documentary analysis are used to provide further insights into smoking behaviours. The findings suggest that the practice of gifting cigarettes to pesantren teachers was common. Positive beliefs about smoking, particularly herbal cigarettes, was another factor that greatly influenced pesantren teachers and students smoking behaviours. They believed that smoking herbal cigarettes could provide health benefits, maintaining health, curing diseases, and reducing addiction. Furthermore, smoking was believed to provide smokers with financial benefits. Religiosity was also found to significantly influence pesantren teachers and santri to smoke. Smoker participants believed that smoking-related diseases and death was mostly determined by Allah, and humans had very passive role to control their health states. In contrast to the previous findings, however, the findings of the current study challenge a theory that states religion can be a protective factor against tobacco use. The thesis suggests there is a need to review smoke-free policies and develop pesantren specific public health campaigns that incorporate culturally specific approaches combined with conventional public health methods. It makes an original contribution to knowledge about the role of gifting, religiosity, and health beliefs on the smoking behaviours of santri (students) and Kyai (Islamic Scholar, Teacher, or Leader) in pesantren

Cross-cultural measurement invariance of adolescent self-report on the pediatric quality of life inventory™ 4.0

    No full text
This study evaluated the cross-cultural measurement invariance of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory version 4.0 (PedsQLTM) among adolescents sampled from Bulgaria, Croatia, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Serbia, and Turkey. The multiple-indicator multiple-cause (MIMIC) model was used, which allowed controlling of demographic variables (i.e., age, gender, and socioeconomic status). Significant effects of country on scores within the PedsQLTM domains were observed, with up to 17 items showing differential item functioning (DIF) across the countries. We did not find support for cross-cultural measurement invariance hypotheses for scores on the PedsQLTM adolescent self-report in this study. Researchers should use caution in making cross-cultural quality of life comparisons while using the PedsQL.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
