Biomechanical behavior of customized scaffolds: A three-dimensional finite element analysis
Teeth loss due to periodontal diseases, trauma, or infections often causes dimensional loss in the affected maxillary. In patients with reduced maxillary size, restoration of chewing function and esthetics with endosseous dental implants may fail. The aim of this work was to simulate the biomechanical behavior, using the finite element method, of customized scaffolds fixed by a dental implant on a partially edentulous jaw. Porous scaffolds were designed from medical images of a partially edentulous jaw with type IV bone quality. The influence of the diameter of the hole and the porosity of the scaffold on the maximum levels of stress and strain in the peri-implant bone was evaluated. The highest stress values in the scaffolds, dental implant, and crown were lower than the yield strength of their respective materials. The customized scaffolds allow to recover the dimensions of the evaluated jaw. A significant decrease in stress and strain values was observed in the peri-implant cortical bone. Furthermore, it was found that the evaluated parameters did not have a significant influence on the maximum von Mises equivalent stress and maximum strain values in the peri-implant bone.MCIN/ AEI/10.13039/501100011033 PID2019-109371 GB-I0
Determination of curing heat and curing time of light-cured composite resins by differential scanning calorimetry
The behavior of curing heat of in light-cured restorative composite
resins, containing bis-GMA and 3G, was investigated by differential
scanning calorimetry (DSC). Visible light-activated polymerization of these
monomer systems was studied using camphorquinone (CQ) and dimethylaminoethyl
methacrylate (DMAEMA) as reducing agent. In particular, DSC
can be easily used to measure the heat of polymerization because of the
easy features in the sample preparation. Four samples of a visible lightcured
restorative composite resin (two of them unfilled and two filled) were
studied at two different light exposition times. The used materials in this
study were bis-GMA, 2,2-bis[p-g-methacryloxy-b-hydroxypropoxy)phenyl]-
propane; 3G, triethylene glycol dimethacrylate; CQ, camphorquinone and
DMAEMA, dimethylaminoethyl+methacrylate. The two filled composites
were prepared with silicium dioxide (77 wt %, 30 µm particle size average).
A system of thermal analysis Mettler TA-3000, DSC-30 was used to carry
out measurements, in an isothermal segment at 37 oC during 5 min under a
controlled thermal program. The specimens were polymerized by illuminating
them in a DSC apparatus with radiation from a visible light
source (Heliolux II) for 0.33 and 0.67 min and the heat output was determined.
It seems that the exothermic peak of the DSC curve for lightcured
resins depend on the heat of polymerization of each monomer itself contained
in the resins

Physical chemical and thermoanalytical characterization of cements based on synthetic hydroxyapatite
Discovering Spatio-Temporal Patterns in Precision Agriculture Based on Triclustering
Agriculture has undergone some very important changes over
the last few decades. The emergence and evolution of precision agri culture has allowed to move from the uniform site management to the
site-specific management, with both economic and environmental advan tages. However, to be implemented effectively, site-specific management
requires within-field spatial variability to be well-known and character ized. In this paper, an algorithm that delineates within-field management
zones in a maize plantation is introduced. The algorithm, based on tri clustering, mines clusters from temporal remote sensing data. Data from
maize crops in Alentejo, Portugal, have been used to assess the suit ability of applying triclustering to discover patterns over time, that may
eventually help farmers to improve their harvests.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2017-88209-C2Fundaçao para a Ciéncia e a Tecnologia (FCT) UIDB/04561/202
Nanostructured fusiform hydroxyapatite particles precipitated from aquaculture wastewater
The present work represents a new approach for the isolation of uniform nano particulate hydroxyapatite (HAp). The chemical characterization of a calcium phosphate product obtained from industrial trout farm aquaculture wastewater by two different routes, washing either with a basic aqueous medium (washNaOH) or followed by a further washing with ethanol (washEtOH), is explored. Characterization of the isolated materials includes morphology studies (SEM and TEM), structural (XRD, electron diffraction), compositional (EDX) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The obtained products are a mixture of different compounds, with hydroxyapatite the predominant phase. The morphology is unusually nanometric size with fusiform shaped particles, such characteristics are ordinarily only obtained by synthetic routes. This process of phosphate precipitation represents a unique self-sufficient process to be compared to conventional chemical or biological practices for precipitating phosphate
Study and Characterization of Expansive Cement
The objective of this study is to characterize commercial expansive cement for subsequent development of national formulation, with consequent economic effect and independence of the international market. On the other hand the results contribute to the development of scientific and technological potential. Expansive cement is a product that enables non-explosive demolition, rock and concrete demolition. To characterize the composition of these products, techniques used infrared spectroscopy with Fourier Transforms and Scanning Electron Microscopy
Effect of heat treatment on apatite coatings deposited on pre-calcified titanium substrates
Titanium and its alloys are considered interesting materials for endosseous implants. However, they still present drawbacks related to their in-vivo behavior that can be overcome by coatings, such as apatite. This work focuses on the deposition of apatite coatings on commercially pure titanium (grade II) substrates previously pre-calcified. The influence of the temperature used in the thermal treatment on the microstructure and tribo-mechanical surface properties was analyzed. The coatings were structurally and chemically characterized and their tribo-mechanical behavior was evaluated. The nano-apatite coatings were only formed on surfaces with successive treatments in NaOH and CaCl solutions. In addition, scratch tests showed that after the heat treatment the nanoapatite coatings had high bond strength to the substrate.Authors thank to ICMS(CSIC-US)(Spain) for the use of their SEM and XRD facilities.
