    Heritage designation and scale: a World Heritage case study of the Ningaloo Coast

    © 2015 Tod Jones, Roy Jones and Michael Hughes As heritage research has engaged with a greater plurality of heritage practices, scale has emerged as an important concept in Heritage Studies, albeit relatively narrowly defined as hierarchical levels (household, local, national, etcetera). This paper argues for a definition of scale in heritage research that incorporates size (geographical scale), level (vertical scale) and relation (an understanding that scale is constituted through dynamic relationships in specific contexts). The paper utilises this definition of scale to analyse heritage designation first through consideration of changing World Heritage processes, and then through a case study of the world heritage designation of the Ningaloo Coast region in Western Australia. Three key findings are: both scale and heritage gain appeal because they are abstractions, and gain definition through the spatial politics of interrelationships within specific situations; the spatial politics of heritage designation comes into focus through attention to those configurations of size, level and relation that are invoked and enabled in heritage processes; and researchers choice to analyse or ignore particular scales and scalar politics are political decisions. Utilising scale as size, level and relation enables analyses that move beyond heritage to the spatial politics through which all heritage is constituted

    A new methodological contribution for the geodiversity assessment: applicability to Ceará State (Brazil)

    The concept of geodiversity aggregates the abiotic elements of nature and promotes the geoconservation. The main objective of this work is to contribute to the upgrade of the method for the assessment and quantification of geodiversity proposed by Pereira et al. (2013). The method is based on the superposition of a regular grid of 12 × 12 km on different maps (lithology, geomorphology, soil, paleonthology, mineral and geological energy resources) at scales of 1:250,000 to 1:600,000. In addition to other up- grades, the water resources are regarded here as a new com- ponent to consider when quantifying geodiversity. The sum of these maps generated the quantitative Map of Geodiversity Indices and the Map of Geodiversity Assessment, ranging from very low to very high geodiversity. The analysis of the geodiversity map of the State of Ceará (Brazil) shows the applicability and advantage of this method, highlighting two regions with higher levels of geodiversity (Northwest and South) and another region with the lowest levels (Sertões Cearenses). The results also allowed the characterization of the State of Ceará concerning the individual components of the geodiversity, especially the water resources.     Australian examples of residential integrated water cycle planning: accepted current practice and a suggested alternative

    Australian examples of Integrated Water Cycle Planning (IWCP) for residential development demonstrate that providing multiple household-water connections is a generally accepted practice. These connections typically include a potable mains supply, a separate non-potable supply utilising reclaimed water and/or a household roofwater tank for non-potable uses. Stormwater is not fully exploited as a potential urban water source. The advent of national guidelines for using recycled water for drinking purposes is expected to simplify IWCP towards a single-line household-water supply reclaimed from a range of different sources. An IWCP approach is suggested in this paper based on a single household supply complemented by: 1) potential separation of blackwater to reduce human health risk and to enhance community acceptance of recycled water, 2) the use of water sensitive urban design requirements of storing and slowly releasing urban stormwater, and 3) taking advantage of economies of scale by integrating communal roofwater tanks into the urban stormwater system
