Channel characterisation of cooperative relaying power line communication systems

© 2016 IEEE. Power line communication (PLC) technology offers a promising platform for numerous communication applications. The power lines however can significantly attenuate communication signals operating in high frequency band. For this reason, multi-hop PLC systems become desirable. In this paper, we investigates the effect of multi-hop relaying on the power line channel transfer function. Measured results are compared with results obtained from sumulations in Matlab. Results show that the presence of relays between a transmitting and a receiving PLC nodes can intensify the attenuation and frequency selectivity. Coping With the Threat of Ebola in Monrovia: A Case Study

In early 2014, 3 West African states of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone made news headlines when Ebola virus disease (EVD) ravaged the sub-region. The Liberian government was ill-equipped to efficiently contain EVD outbreak due to inadequate training for hospitals and healthcare workers. The government\u27s mandatory cremation policies and the banning of public gatherings significantly contributed to the spread of EVD. EVD infected 10,666 and 4,808 died from the disease in the first 6 months of the epidemic. Using Bandura\u27s Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) as the theoretical framework, the purpose of this case study research was to examine the social, economic, and policy factors that contributed to the spread of EVD in the city of Monrovia, Liberia. Utilizing snowball sampling to identify participants, data were collected through in-depth interviews with 30 participants that included 10 EVD survivors, 10 family caregivers, 2 government officials, 4 nongovernmental organization staff, 2 academicians, and 2 members of the media. All data were inductively coded and analyzed using Braun and Clarke\u27s thematic analysis procedure. Two key themes were identified through data analysis. First, participants noted that a better understanding of cultural traditions may have created opportunities for intervention that prevented unnecessary exposure to the virus. Second, survivors and caregivers experienced a \u27hope for the best, but expect the worst\u27 mentality throughout the experience that guided faith. The positive social change implications stemming include recommendations to the government of Monrovia to implement culturally sensitive policies related to pandemic containment, including training of healthcare workers and the public in the event of disease outbreak

Asthma Prevalence: Focus on Prevention Management in Community Settings

Asthma prevalence continues to increase across the United States of America, affecting more than 43.1 million people and projected to affect over 50 million people by 2025. Asthma prevalence differs by demographic characteristics, such as race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, education, age and gender. Poor quality of life is common among people who suffer from asthma, in addition to school and work absenteeism. In 2008, children 5-17 years old with at least one reported asthma attack missed 10.5 million school days in the past year (CDC, 2010). Healthcare use for asthma is high and disparities remain in asthma healthcare use and reimbursement. In community settings, reimbursement for asthma education and prevention has been problematic due to current reimbursement mechanisms (Bodenheimer et al. (2003); Halterman (2010); CDC (2011) and Laster et al. 2010) that do not go far enough in assisting low-income communities manage their asthma medically nor have uniform standards for billable services associated with asthma management provided by both healthcare professionals and public health workers. A change in reimbursement policy is advocated and the evidence for the effectiveness of community health workers in asthma management is examined

Coulomb and quenching effects in small nanoparticle-based spasers

We study numerically the effect of mode mixing and direct dipole-dipole interactions between gain molecules on spasing in a small composite nanoparticles with a metallic core and a dye-doped dielectric shell. By combining Maxwell-Bloch equations with Green's function formalism, we calculate lasing frequency and threshold population inversion for various gain densities in the shell. We find that gain coupling to nonresonant plasmon modes has a negligible effect on spasing threshold. In contrast, the direct dipole-dipole coupling, by causing random shifts of gain molecules' excitation frequencies, hinders reaching the spasing threshold in small systems. We identify a region of parameter space in which spasing can occur considering these effects.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
