Spinodal fractionation in a polydisperse square well fluid
Using Kinetic Monte Carlo simulation, we model gas-liquid spinodal
decomposition in a size-polydisperse square well fluid, representing a
'near-monodisperse' colloidal dispersion. We find that fractionation (demixing)
of particle sizes between the phases begins asserting itself shortly after the
onset of phase ordering. Strikingly, the direction of size fractionation can be
reversed by a seemingly trivial choice between two inter-particle potentials
which, in the monodisperse case, are identical -- we rationalise this in terms
of a perturbative, equilibrium theory of polydispersity. Furthermore, our
quantitative results show that Kinetic Monte Carlo simulation can provide
detailed insight into the role of fractionation in real colloidal systems.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Bootstrapping Monte Carlo Tree Search with an Imperfect Heuristic
We consider the problem of using a heuristic policy to improve the value
approximation by the Upper Confidence Bound applied in Trees (UCT) algorithm in
non-adversarial settings such as planning with large-state space Markov
Decision Processes. Current improvements to UCT focus on either changing the
action selection formula at the internal nodes or the rollout policy at the
leaf nodes of the search tree. In this work, we propose to add an auxiliary arm
to each of the internal nodes, and always use the heuristic policy to roll out
simulations at the auxiliary arms. The method aims to get fast convergence to
optimal values at states where the heuristic policy is optimal, while retaining
similar approximation as the original UCT in other states. We show that
bootstrapping with the proposed method in the new algorithm, UCT-Aux, performs
better compared to the original UCT algorithm and its variants in two benchmark
experiment settings. We also examine conditions under which UCT-Aux works well.Comment: 16 pages, accepted for presentation at ECML'1
A pragmatic approach to semantic repositories benchmarking
The aim of this paper is to benchmark various semantic repositories in order to evaluate their deployment in a commercial image retrieval and browsing application. We adopt a two-phase approach for evaluating the target semantic repositories: analytical parameters such as query language and reasoning support are used to select the pool of the target repositories, and practical parameters such as load and query response times are used to select the best match to application requirements. In addition to utilising a widely accepted benchmark for OWL repositories (UOBM), we also use a real-life dataset from the target application, which provides us with the opportunity of consolidating our findings. A distinctive advantage of this benchmarking study is that the essential requirements for the target system such as the semantic expressivity and data scalability are clearly defined, which allows us to claim contribution to the benchmarking methodology for this class of applications
Synthetic spectra of H Balmer and HeI absorption lines. I: Stellar library
We present a grid of synthetic profiles of stellar H Balmer and HeI lines at
optical wavelengths with a sampling of 0.3 A. The grid spans a range of
effective temperature 4000 K < Teff < 50000 K, and gravity 0.0 < log g < 5.0 at
solar metallicity. For Teff > 25000 K, NLTE stellar atmosphere models are
computed using the code TLUSTY (Hubeny 1988). For cooler stars, Kurucz (1993)
LTE models are used to compute thesynthetic spectra. The grid includes the
profiles of the high-order hydrogen Balmer series and HeI lines for effective
temperatures and gravities that have not been previously synthesized. The
behavior of H8 to H13 and HeI 3819 with effective temperature and gravity is
very similar to that of the lower terms of the series (e.g. Hb) and the other
HeI lines at longer wavelengths; therefore, they are suited for the
determination of the atmospheric parameters of stars. These lines are
potentially important to make predictions for these stellar absorption features
in galaxies with active star formation. Evolutionary synthesis models of these
lines for starburst and post-starburst galaxies are presented in a companion

Monte Carlo modeling of atomic oxygen attack of polymers with protective coatings on LDEF
Characterization of the behavior of atomic oxygen interaction with materials on the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) assists in understanding of the mechanisms involved. Thus the reliability of predicting in-space durability of materials based on ground laboratory testing should be improved. A computational model which simulates atomic oxygen interaction with protected polymers was developed using Monte Carlo techniques. Through the use of an assumed mechanistic behavior of atomic oxygen interaction based on in-space atomic oxygen erosion of unprotected polymers and ground laboratory atomic oxygen interaction with protected polymers, prediction of atomic oxygen interaction with protected polymers on LDEF was accomplished. However, the results of these predictions are not consistent with the observed LDEF results at defect sites in protected polymers. Improved agreement between observed LDEF results and predicted Monte Carlo modeling can be achieved by modifying of the atomic oxygen interactive assumptions used in the model. Co-evolution of RDF Datasets
Linking Data initiatives have fostered the publication of large number of RDF
datasets in the Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud, as well as the development of
query processing infrastructures to access these data in a federated fashion.
However, different experimental studies have shown that availability of LOD
datasets cannot be always ensured, being RDF data replication required for
envisioning reliable federated query frameworks. Albeit enhancing data
availability, RDF data replication requires synchronization and conflict
resolution when replicas and source datasets are allowed to change data over
time, i.e., co-evolution management needs to be provided to ensure consistency.
In this paper, we tackle the problem of RDF data co-evolution and devise an
approach for conflict resolution during co-evolution of RDF datasets. Our
proposed approach is property-oriented and allows for exploiting semantics
about RDF properties during co-evolution management. The quality of our
approach is empirically evaluated in different scenarios on the DBpedia-live
dataset. Experimental results suggest that proposed proposed techniques have a

3D Ultrastructure of the Cochlear Outer Hair Cell Lateral Wall Revealed By Electron Tomography.
Outer Hair Cells (OHCs) in the mammalian cochlea display a unique type of voltage-induced mechanical movement termed electromotility, which amplifies auditory signals and contributes to the sensitivity and frequency selectivity of mammalian hearing. Electromotility occurs in the OHC lateral wall, but it is not fully understood how the supramolecular architecture of the lateral wall enables this unique form of cellular motility. Employing electron tomography of high-pressure frozen and freeze-substituted OHCs, we visualized the 3D structure and organization of the membrane and cytoskeletal components of the OHC lateral wall. The subsurface cisterna (SSC) is a highly prominent feature, and we report that the SSC membranes and lumen possess hexagonally ordered arrays of particles. We also find the SSC is tightly connected to adjacent actin filaments by short filamentous protein connections. Pillar proteins that join the plasma membrane to the cytoskeleton appear as variable structures considerably thinner than actin filaments and significantly more flexible than actin-SSC links. The structurally rich organization and rigidity of the SSC coupled with apparently weaker mechanical connections between the plasma membrane (PM) and cytoskeleton reveal that the membrane-cytoskeletal architecture of the OHC lateral wall is more complex than previously appreciated. These observations are important for our understanding of OHC mechanics and need to be considered in computational models of OHC electromotility that incorporate subcellular features
Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy discriminates the response to microglial stimulation of wild type and Alzheimer's disease models.
Microglia activation has emerged as a potential key factor in the pathogenesis of Alzheimers disease. Metabolite levels assessed by magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) are used as markers of neuroinflammation in neurodegenerative diseases, but how they relate to microglial activation in health and chronic disease is incompletely understood. Using MRS, we monitored the brain metabolic response to lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-induced microglia activation in vivo in a transgenic mouse model of Alzheimers disease (APP/PS1) and healthy controls (wild-type (WT) littermates) over 4 hours. We assessed reactive gliosis by immunohistochemistry and correlated metabolic and histological measures. In WT mice, LPS induced a microglial phenotype consistent with activation, associated with a sustained increase in macromolecule and lipid levels (ML9). This effect was not seen in APP/PS1 mice, where LPS did not lead to a microglial response measured by histology, but induced a late increase in the putative inflammation marker myoinositol (mI) and metabolic changes in total creatine and taurine previously reported to be associated with amyloid load. We argue that ML9 and mI distinguish the response of WT and APP/PS1 mice to immune mediators. Lipid and macromolecule levels may represent a biomarker of activation of healthy microglia, while mI may not be a glial marker
