    InfoBrief 2 : capacity strengthening of SGCs to measure economic sub-sector innovation performance in Sub-Saharan Africa

    This policy brief is based on research and development (R&D) data submitted by 23 countries for the African Innovation Outlook 3 (AIO3) study, as well as current work on indicators of economic sub-sector innovation performance. R&D and innovation systems need to be better mapped to inform policymakers and decision makers. The African Innovation Outlook 3 (AIO3) results provide a first level of understanding of R&D and innovation performance at the national level. Results also show that more work needs to be done to improve the collection of quality and high coverage data.SIDANational Research Foundatio

    Distribution of Gross domestic expenditure on R&D (GERD) by sector of R&D performance, and by type of cost and type of R&D activity for Ethiopia are discussed in this paper. For Science Granting Councils (SGCs) to effectively manage promotion of R&D activities, micro-level indicators are essential for measuring and understanding the status of R&D performance. Micro-data provide detailed information on the characteristics of the smallest unit of enquiry within a system. GERD measures all expenditures on R&D within national borders

    This report describes project deliverables, findings, lessons, challenges and recommendations from the Science Granting Council Initiative (SGCI) Theme 2. Activities involved building the capacity of SGCs to design and monitor research programmes based on science, technology and innovation (STI) indicators within the context of national development. The need for generating a data-rich picture on the status of subnational and national research and development (R&D) and Innovation systems is a priority.     La cumbre permitió reconocer que ambos continentes comparten el objetivo común de alimentar al mundo y fomentar la sostenibilidad ambiental global, y puso de manifiesto la necesidad de desarrollar una agenda conjunta de cooperación. Durante esa mesa redonda, los ministros de agricultura y otros actores del sector, de ambos continentes, analizaron la agenda global para la transformación de los sistemas agroalimentarios, contando con la participación de especialistas de alto nivel y amplio reconocimiento internacional. El propósito de esta Cumbre fue identificar las áreas en las que las dos regiones puedan trabajar juntas, sobre todo, aquellas en las que las oportunidades de cooperación podrían ser más rentables; así como los mecanismos operativos y financieros necesarios para movilizar los recursos requeridos. Los diálogos se concentraron en las siguientes áreas temáticas: (i) ciencia, tecnología e innovación; (ii) cambio climático y resiliencia; (iii) oportunidades en la agricultura digital; (iv) innovaciones institucionales y políticas; (v) comercio internacional y regional de alimentos; y, (vi) la transformación de los sistemas agroalimentarios post-CSANU; entre otros asuntos considerados indispensables para aumentar la productividad, la inclusión y la sostenibilidad de los sistemas agroalimentarios
