    Cows fed hydroponic fodder and conventional diet: effects on milk quality

    The technology of green fodder production is especially important in arid and semiarid regions. Hydroponics improves on average the amount of crops in the same space, as traditional soil-based farming and can reduce water consumption compared to traditional farming methods. Limited research has been carried out on the use of hydroponic fodder and milk quality. A comparative study of traditional (Malta farm) and hydroponic fodder (Gozo farm) was conducted in Malta with 20 cows of the Holstein\u2013Friesian breed from two farms. Individual and bulk-tank milk samples were collected once a week for a period of 1 month in order to evaluate physical (pH, conductivity, density, freezing point) and chemical (fat, protein, ash, lactose, solid nonfat) parameters as well as mineral (Zn, Cu, Pb, Ba) content. Milk proximate and physical data were processed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures and an ANOVA procedure with farm and time as effects for minerals. The results indicated differences in fat content and pH, showing higher values (P < 0.05) in milk samples of cows fed with the hydroponic rather than the traditional fodder; a significant time effect (P < 0.001) was found in all qualitative analyses except for lactose and salts. Minerals were in the range as reported elsewhere; Cu and Pb content was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in the Gozo farm than the one in Malta, whereas Zn content showed higher values in Malta (P < 0.001) than Gozo. Although the proximate results were similar for both farms, except for the higher fat content for the Gozo farm, principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that milk quality for the Gozo farm was superior to that of the Malta farm.     LargeScale Precursors to Major Lake Effect Snowstorms Lee of Lake Erie

    Lake‐effect snowstorms are primarily a mesoscale feature; however, major lakeeffect snowstorms are linked closely to their synoptic environment. Thus, a lakeeffect system which lasts for more than 24 h cannot only be explained by the boundary layer; it is also associated with the upper tropospheric flow. This research will address whether major lake‐effect snow events off of Lake Erie can also be associated with large‐scale planetary features several days prior to event onset. The goal is to aid in the forecast process by increasing the accuracy and leadtime of lake‐effect snow forecasts. This study includes 31 cases recorded from the National Weather Service at Buffalo’s lake effect database. These 31 cases were then stratified into categories depending on its: length, the time of year, and the type of event. This categorization allowed for comparison of the state of the atmosphere in the days prior to different types of events. In order to assess the large‐scale pattern, teleconnections were used as a proxy for the state of the atmosphere. For cases that lasted for greater than 42 hours, there was a correlation to the phase Madden Julian oscillation eight days prior to onset. The cases that occurred during the positive and negative states of the Arctic Oscillation had two different upper level trough patterns, the former originating in Southern Canada and the latter over the Southwestern United States

    Description beyond the mean field approximation of an electrolyte confined between two planar metallic electrodes

    We study an electrolyte confined in a slab of width WW composed of two grounded metallic parallel electrodes. We develop a description of this system in a low coupling regime beyond the mean field (Poisson--Boltzmann) approximation. There are two ways to model the metallic boundaries: as ideal conductors in which the electric potential is zero and it does not fluctuate, or as good conductors in which the average electric potential is zero but the thermal fluctuations of the potential are not zero. This latter model is more realistic. For the ideal conductor model we find that the disjoining pressure is positive behaves as 1/W31/W^3 for large separations with a prefactor that is universal, i.e. independent of the microscopic constitution of the system. For the good conductor boundaries the disjoining pressure is negative and it has an exponential decay for large WW. We also compute the density and electric potential profiles inside the electrolyte. These are the same in both models. If the electrolyte is charge asymmetric we find that the system is not locally neutral and that a non-zero potential difference builds up between any electrode and the interior of the system although both electrodes are grounded.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, added a new appendix B and a discussion on ideal conductors vs. good conductor

    Magnetic Field Structure around Low-Mass Class 0 Protostars: B335, L1527 and IC348-SMM2

    We report new 350 micron polarization observations of the thermal dust emission from the cores surrounding the low-mass, Class 0 YSOs L1527, IC348-SMM2 and B335. We have inferred magnetic field directions from these observations, and have used them together with results in the literature to determine whether magnetically regulated core-collapse and star-formation models are consistent with the observations. These models predict a pseudo-disk with its symmetry axis aligned with the core magnetic field. The models also predict a magnetic field pinch structure on a scale less than or comparable to the infall radii for these sources. In addition, if the core magnetic field aligns (or nearly aligns) the core rotation axis with the magnetic field before core collapse, then the models predict the alignment (or near alignment) of the overall pinch field structure with the bipolar outflows in these sources. We show that if one includes the distorting effects of bipolar outflows on magnetic fields, then in general the observational results for L1527 and IC348-SMM2 are consistent with these magnetically regulated models. We can say the same for B335 only if we assume the distorting effects of the bipolar outflow on the magnetic fields within the B335 core are much greater than for L1527 and IC348-SMM2. We show that the energy densities of the outflows in all three sources are large enough to distort the magnetic fields predicted by magnetically regulated models.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    Charge-Fluctuation-Induced Non-analytic Bending Rigidity

    In this Letter, we consider a neutral system of mobile positive and negative charges confined on the surface of curved films. This may be an appropriate model for: i) a highly charged membrane whose counterions are confined to a sheath near its surface; ii) a membrane composed of an equimolar mixture of anionic and cationic surfactants in aqueous solution. We find that the charge fluctuations contribute a non-analytic term to the bending rigidity that varies logarithmically with the radius of curvature.     Multilevel examination of diabetes in modernising China: what elements of urbanisation are most associated with diabetes?

    Aims/hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between urbanisation-related factors and diabetes prevalence in China. Methods: Anthropometry, fasting blood glucose (FBG) and community-level data were collected for 7,741 adults (18–90 years) across 217 communities and nine provinces in the 2009 China Health and Nutrition Survey to examine diabetes (FBG ≄7.0 mmol/l or doctor diagnosis). Sex-stratified multilevel models, clustered at the community and province levels and controlling for individual-level age and household income were used to examine the association between diabetes and: (1) a multicomponent urbanisation measure reflecting overall modernisation and (2) 12 separate components of urbanisation (e.g., population density, employment, markets, infrastructure and social factors). Results: Prevalent diabetes was higher in more-urbanised (men 12%; women 9%) vs less-urbanised (men 6%; women 5%) areas. In sex-stratified multilevel models adjusting for residential community and province, age and household income, there was a twofold higher diabetes prevalence in urban vs rural areas (men OR 2.02, 95% CI 1.47, 2.78; women, OR 1.94, 95% CI 1.35, 2.79). All urbanisation components were positively associated with diabetes, with variation across components (e.g. men, economic and income diversity, OR 1.42, 95% CI 1.20, 1.66; women, transportation infrastructure, OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.06, 1.32). Community-level variation in diabetes was comparatively greater for women (intraclass correlation [ICC] 0.03–0.05) vs men (ICC ≀0.01); province-level variation was greater for men (men 0.03–0.04; women 0.02). Conclusions/interpretation: Diabetes prevention and treatment efforts are needed particularly in urbanised areas of China. Community economic factors, modern markets, communications and transportation infrastructure might present opportunities for such efforts.     Attraction between DNA molecules mediated by multivalent ions

    The effective force between two parallel DNA molecules is calculated as a function of their mutual separation for different valencies of counter- and salt ions and different salt concentrations. Computer simulations of the primitive model are used and the shape of the DNA molecules is accurately modelled using different geometrical shapes. We find that multivalent ions induce a significant attraction between the DNA molecules whose strength can be tuned by the averaged valency of the ions. The physical origin of the attraction is traced back either to electrostatics or to entropic contributions. For multivalent counter- and monovalent salt ions, we find a salt-induced stabilization effect: the force is first attractive but gets repulsive for increasing salt concentration. Furthermore, we show that the multivalent-ion-induced attraction does not necessarily correlate with DNA overcharging.Comment: 51 pages and 13 figure

    Electroviscous effects of simple electrolytes under shear

    On the basis of a hydrodynamical model analogous to that in critical fluids, we investigate the influences of shear flow upon the electrostatic contribution to the viscosity of binary electrolyte solutions in the Debye-H\"{u}ckel approximation. Within the linear-response theory, we reproduce the classical limiting law that the excess viscosity is proportional to the square root of the concentration of the electrolyte. We also extend this result for finite shear. An analytic expression of the anisotropic structure factor of the charge density under shear is obtained, and its deformation at large shear rates is discussed. A non-Newtonian effect caused by deformations of the ionic atmosphere is also elucidated for τDγ˙>1\tau_D\dot{\gamma}>1. This finding concludes that the maximum shear stress that the ionic atmosphere can support is proportional to λD−3\lambda_D^{-3}, where γ˙\dot{\gamma}, λD\lambda_D and τD=λD2/D\tau_D=\lambda_D^2/D are, respectively, the shear rate, the Debye screening length and the Debye relaxation time with DD being the relative diffusivity at the infinite dilution limit of the electrolyte.Comment: 13pages, 2figure

    Can Polymer Coils be modeled as "Soft Colloids"?

    We map dilute or semi-dilute solutions of non-intersecting polymer chains onto a fluid of ``soft'' particles interacting via a concentration dependent effective pair potential, by inverting the pair distribution function of the centers of mass of the initial polymer chains. A similar inversion is used to derive an effective wall-polymer potential; these potentials are combined to successfully reproduce the calculated exact depletion interaction induced by non-intersecting polymers between two walls.
