    Multiplicative renormalizability and quark propagator

    The renormalized Dyson-Schwinger equation for the quark propagator is studied, in Landau gauge, in a novel truncation which preserves multiplicative renormalizability. The renormalization constants are formally eliminated from the integral equations, and the running coupling explicitly enters the kernels of the new equations. To construct a truncation which preserves multiplicative renormalizability, and reproduces the correct leading order perturbative behavior, non-trivial cancellations involving the full quark-gluon vertex are assumed in the quark self-energy loop. A model for the running coupling is introduced, with infrared fixed point in agreement with previous Dyson-Schwinger studies of the gauge sector, and with correct logarithmic tail. Dynamical chiral symmetry breaking is investigated, and the generated quark mass is of the order of the extension of the infrared plateau of the coupling, and about three times larger than in the Abelian approximation, which violates multiplicative renormalizability. The generated scale is of the right size for hadronic phenomenology, without requiring an infrared enhancement of the running coupling.Comment: 17 pages; minor corrections, comparison to lattice results added; accepted for publication in Phys.     Observation of the Purcell effect in high-index-contrast micropillar

    We have fabricated pillar microcavity samples with Bragg mirrors consisting of alternate layers of GaAs and Aluminium Oxide. Compared to the more widely studied GaAs/AlAs micropillars these mirrors can achieve higher reflectivities with fewer layer repeats and reduce the mode volume. We have studied a number of samples containing a low density of InGaAs/GaAs self assembled quantum dots in a cavity and here report observation of a three fold enhancement in the radiative lifetime of a quantum dot exciton state due to the Purcell effect

    Oxide-apertured microcavity single-photon emitting diode

    We have developed a microcavity single-photon source based on a single quantum dot within a planar cavity in which wet-oxidation of a high-aluminium content layer provides lateral confinement of both the photonic mode and the injection current. Lateral confinement of the optical mode in optically pumped structures produces a strong enhancement of the radiative decay rate. Using microcavity structures with doped contact layers, we demonstrate a single-photon emitting diode where current may be injected into a single dot

    DD-optimal saturated designs: a simulation study

    In this work we focus on saturated DD-optimal designs. Using recent results, we identify DD-optimal designs with the solutions of an optimization problem with linear constraints. We introduce new objective functions based on the geometric structure of the design and we compare them with the classical DD-efficiency criterion. We perform a simulation study. In all the test cases we observe that designs with high values of DD-efficiency have also high values of the new objective functions.Comment: 8 pages.     Leaders or organisations? A comparison study of factors affecting organisational citizenship behaviour in independent hotels

    Purpose - Managers of independent hotels need to maximise organisational citizenship behaviour among employees to gain sufficient competitive advantage in an increasingly competitive environment so it is important to understand what affects it. To achieve this, our study tests if servant leadership, organisational citizenship behaviour and other related constructs have the same relationships between them in two contrasting parts of the world. Design/methodology/approach - Survey data were gathered from managers of independent hotels in Spain (451) and Iran (429). Spain was selected because it is a developed country that is a leading destination for tourists. Iran was chosen as a contrast since it is a developing country with a growing tourist industry. Findings - Our findings show that Spain and Iran demonstrate different patterns of relationships in the selected variables suggesting that Iranians trust their leaders more than the organisational systems while the Spanish trust organisational systems more than their leaders. These results are consistent with Spanish culture having higher individualism than Iranian culture. They are also consistent with Iranian culture prioritising traditional values, such as personal loyalty to managers, and Spanish culture prioritising modern values, such as impersonal rules and objective processes. Research limitations/implications - Our study suggests leadership and justice affects organisational citizenship behaviour in different ways where modern values prevail compared to where traditional values prevail. It suggests that managers of independent hotels in Iran should follow the example of Spanish hotel managers by adopting more objective and fair procedures while showing that inward investors and expatriate managers in Iran should be aware of the importance of personal leadership style. Further research is needed in different countries and regions to improve the generalisability of our findings. Originality/value – Our study contributes to the literature on the application of the servant leadership construct, which was developed in the West, to other regional contexts. It also adds to the literature of independent hotels, which are an important yet under-researched part of the hospitality industry

    On the precision of chiral-dispersive calculations of ππ\pi\pi scattering

    We calculate the combination 2a0(0)5a0(2)2a_0^{(0)}-5a_0^{(2)} (the Olsson sum rule) and the scattering lengths and effective ranges a1a_1, a2(I)a_2^{(I)} and b1b_1, b2(I)b_2^{(I)} dispersively (with the Froissart--Gribov representation) using, at low energy, the phase shifts for ππ\pi\pi scattering obtained by Colangelo, Gasser and Leutwyler (CGL) from the Roy equations and chiral perturbation theory, plus experiment and Regge behaviour at high energy, or directly, using the CGL parameters for aas and bbs. We find mismatch, both among the CGL phases themselves and with the results obtained from the pion form factor. This reaches the level of several (2 to 5) standard deviations, and is essentially independent of the details of the intermediate energy region (0.82E1.420.82\leq E\leq 1.42 GeV) and, in some cases, of the high energy behaviour assumed.     Charge and spin state readout of a double quantum dot coupled to a resonator

    State readout is a key requirement for a quantum computer. For semiconductor-based qubit devices it is usually accomplished using a separate mesoscopic electrometer. Here we demonstrate a simple detection scheme in which a radio-frequency resonant circuit coupled to a semiconductor double quantum dot is used to probe its charge and spin states. These results demonstrate a new non-invasive technique for measuring charge and spin states in quantum dot systems without requiring a separate mesoscopic detector

    We study chiral symmetry breaking in quenched QED4_4, using a vertex Ansatz recently proposed by Curtis and Pennington. Bifurcation analysis is employed to establish the existence of a critical coupling and to estimate its value.     Dark Solitons in Discrete Lattices: Saturable versus Cubic Nonlinearities

    In the present work, we study dark solitons in dynamical lattices with the saturable nonlinearity and compare them with those in lattices with the cubic nonlinearity. This comparison has become especially relevant in light of recent experimental developments in the former context. The stability properties of the fundamental waves, for both on-site and inter-site modes, are examined analytically and corroborated by numerical results. Furthermore, their dynamical evolution when they are found to be unstable is obtained through appropriately crafted numerical experiments.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
