Meson-Baryon s-wave Resonances with Strangeness -3
Starting from a consistent SU(6) extension of the Weinberg-Tomozawa (WT)
meson-baryon chiral Lagrangian (Phys. Rev. D74 (2006) 034025), we study the
s-wave meson-baryon resonances in the strangeness S=-3 and negative parity
sector. Those resonances are generated by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation
with the WT interaction used as kernel. The considered mesons are those of the
35-SU(6)-plet, which includes the pseudoscalar (PS) octet of pions and the
vector (V) nonet of the rho meson. For baryons we consider the 56-SU(6)-plet,
made of the 1/2+ octet of the nucleon and the 3/2+ decuplet of the Delta.
Quantum numbers I(J^P)=0(3/2^-) are suggested for the experimental resonances
Omega*(2250)- and Omega*(2380)-. Among other, resonances with I=1 are found,
with minimal quark content sss\bar{l}l', being s the strange quark and l, l'
any of the the light up or down quarks. A clear signal for such a pentaquark
would be a baryonic resonance with strangeness -3 and electric charge of -2 or
0, in proton charge units. We suggest looking for K- Xi- resonances with masses
around 2100 and 2240 MeV in the sector 1(1/2^-), and for pi Omega- and K- Xi*-
resonances with masses around 2260 MeV in the sector 1(3/2^-).Comment: 3 pages, 1 Postscript figure, 7 table
A legal perspective of integrated surface mining, solid waste landfill reclamation and land conservation
In the area of international environmental law this thesis proposes the formulation of one-step planning and permitting regulation for the integrated utilisation of new surface mines as depositories for municipal solid waste. Additionally, the utilisation of abandoned and currently operated surface mines is proposed as solid waste landfills as an integral step in their reclamation. Existing laws, litigation and issues in the United Kingdom, the U.S. and Canada are discussed because of their common legal system, language and heritage. The critical shortage of approved space for disposal of solid waste has caused an urgent and growing problem for both the waste disposal industry and society. Surface mining can serve three important environmental and societal functions inuring to the health and welfare of the public: (1) providing basic minerals for goods and construction; (20 sequentially, to provide critically needed, safe burial sites for society's wastes, and (3) to conserve land by dual purpose use and to restore derelict land to beneficial surface use. Currently, the first two functions are treated environmentally, and in regulation, as two different siting problems, yet they both are earth-disturbing and excavating industries requiring surface restoration. The processes are largely duplicative and should be combined for better efficiency, less earth disturbance, conservation of land, and for fuller and better reclamation of completed surface mines returning the surfaces to greater utility than present mined land reclamation procedures. While both industries are viewed by a developed society and its communities as "bad neighbours", they remain essential and critical for mankind's existence and welfare. The study offers successful examples of the integrated process in each country. The study argues that most non-fuel surface mine openings, if not already safe, can economically, through present containment technology, be made environmentally safe for use as solid waste landfills. Simultaneously, the procedure safeguards and monitors protection of ground and surface waters from landfill contamination
DESAIN PERHITUNGAN BIAYA PRODUKSI UNTUK PERENCANAAN LABA PADA KOMODITI KOPI PERSIKLUS DI DESA SIPONJOT HUMBAHAS
Coffee is one of the important export commodities for the people of Indonesia which is able to contribute quite a large amount of foreign exchange. Siponjot Village, Lintong Nihuta District, is one of the villages that has a large potential for the development of Arabica coffee commodities because Siponjot village is the largest producer of Arabica coffee in Humbahas district. However, there are several obstacles faced in the development of coffee farming, including the calculation of production costs per cycle. Farmers do calculate costs, but it's limited to what costs they incur during production without calculating in detail the costs from land clearing to receiving the harvest, then they also don't know how much net income they get after deducting all costs, they also don't understand how calculate the break-even point and make a profit plan. This study aims to design the calculation of production costs for coffee commodities per cycle so that it is easier for farmers to find out the costs per cycle they incur and net income and then know the break-even point to make a bigger profit plan. This research was conducted in May-August 2022 in Lintong Nihuta District, Humbahas Regency, North Sumatra. The results of the study after calculating the production costs per cycle showed that in one coffee life cycle the farmers spent Rp. 551,368,400 with a yield of 29,940 kg and farmers experienced a profit of Rp. 346,831,600 per cycle
Determination of the strange-quark mass from QCD pseudoscalar sum rules
A new determination of the strange-quark mass is discussed, based on the
two-point function involving the axial-vector current divergences. This Green
function is known in perturbative QCD up to order O(alpha_s^3), and up to
dimension-six in the non-perturbative domain. The hadronic spectral function is
parametrized in terms of the kaon pole, followed by its two radial excitations,
and normalized at threshold according to conventional chiral-symmetry. The
result of a Laplace transform QCD sum rule analysis of this two-point function
is: m_s(1 GeV^2) = 155 pm 25 MeV.Comment: Invited talk given by CAD at QCD98, Montpellier, July 1998. To appear

Preliminary development of proxy-rated quality-of-life scales for children and adults with Niemann-Pick type C
OBJECTIVES: Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC) is a rare life-limiting disease for which there is no cure. No scales currently exist to measure the impact of medication, physical therapy or clinical trials. The aim of this study was to develop age-appropriate Quality-of-Life (QoL) scales to measure the impact of NPC on children and adults. DESIGN: Scale development study using a phenomenological approach to data generation and analysis. METHODS: Fourteen interviews were conducted with people living with NPC and/or their parents/carers. Themes were generated and examined against an existential-phenomenological theory of wellbeing. A matrix was constructed to represent the phenomenological insight gained on participants' subjective experiences and a bank of items that were related to their QoL was developed. RESULTS: NPC quality-of-life questionnaires for children (NPCQLQ-C) and adults (NPCQLQ-A) proxy prototype scales were produced and completed by 23 parents/carers of children (child age mean = 8.61 years) and 20 parents/carers of adults (adult age = 33.4 years). Reliability analysis resulted in a 15-item NPCQLQ-C and a 30-item NPCQLQ-A, which showed excellent internal consistency, Cronbach's α = 0.925 and 0.947, respectively. CONCLUSION: The NPCQLQ-C and NPCQLQ-A are the first disease-specific QoL scales to be developed for people living with NPC. This novel approach to scale development values the experiential, real life impact of living with NPC and focused on the lived-experiences and impact on QoL. The scales will enable healthcare professionals and researchers to have a better understanding and quantifiable measurement of the impact of living with NPC on a patient's daily life
Strong Decays of Strange Quarkonia
In this paper we evaluate strong decay amplitudes and partial widths of
strange mesons (strangeonia and kaonia) in the 3P0 decay model. We give
numerical results for all energetically allowed open-flavor two-body decay
modes of all nsbar and ssbar strange mesons in the 1S, 2S, 3S, 1P, 2P, 1D and
1F multiplets, comprising strong decays of a total of 43 resonances into 525
two-body modes, with 891 numerically evaluated amplitudes. This set of
resonances includes all strange qqbar states with allowed strong decays
expected in the quark model up to ca. 2.2 GeV. We use standard nonrelativistic
quark model SHO wavefunctions to evaluate these amplitudes, and quote numerical
results for all amplitudes present in each decay mode. We also discuss the
status of the associated experimental candidates, and note which states and
decay modes would be especially interesting for future experimental study at
hadronic, e+e- and photoproduction facilities. These results should also be
useful in distinguishing conventional quark model mesons from exotica such as
glueballs and hybrids through their strong decays.Comment: 69 pages, 5 figures, 39 table
Weight Watchers on prescription: an observational study of weight change among adults referred to Weight Watchers by the NHS.
BACKGROUND: The scale of overweight and obesity in the UK places a considerable burden on the NHS. In some areas the NHS has formed partnerships with commercial companies to offer weight management services, but there has been little evaluation of these schemes. This study is an independent audit of the Weight Watchers NHS Referral scheme and evaluates the weight change of obese and overweight adults referred to Weight Watchers (WW) by the NHS. METHOD: Data was obtained from the WW NHS Referral Scheme database for 29,326 referral courses started after 2nd April 2007 and ending before 6th October 2009 [90% female; median age 49 years (IQR 38-61 years); median BMI 35.1 kg/m2 (IQR 31.8-39.5 kg/m2). Participants received vouchers (funded by the PCT following referral by a healthcare professional) to attend 12 WW meetings. Body weight was measured at WW meetings and relayed to the central database. RESULTS: Median weight change for all referrals was -2.8 kg [IQR -5.9--0.7 kg] representing -3.1% initial weight. 33% of all courses resulted in loss of ≥5% initial weight. 54% of courses were completed. Median weight change for those completing a first course was -5.4 kg [IQR -7.8--3.1 kg] or -5.6% of initial weight. 57% lost ≥5% initial weight. CONCLUSIONS: A third of all patients who were referred to WW through the WW NHS Referral Scheme and started a 12 session course achieved ≥5% weight loss, which is usually associated with clinical benefits. This is the largest audit of NHS referral to a commercial weight loss programme in the UK and results are comparable with other options for weight loss available through primary care.RIGHTS : This article is licensed under the BioMed Central licence at http://www.biomedcentral.com/about/license which is similar to the 'Creative Commons Attribution Licence'. Gaussian tree constraints applied to acoustic linguistic functional data
Evolutionary models of languages are usually considered to take the form of trees. With the development of so-called tree constraints the plausibility of the tree model assumptions can be assessed by checking whether the moments of observed variables lie within regions consistent with Gaussian latent tree models. In our linguistic application, the data set comprises acoustic samples (audio recordings) from speakers of five Romance languages or dialects. The aim is to assess these functional data for compatibility with a hereditary tree model at the language level. A novel combination of canonical function analysis (CFA) with a separable covariance structure produces a representative basis for the data. The separable-CFA basis is formed of components which emphasize language differences whilst maintaining the integrity of the observational language-groupings. A previously unexploited Gaussian tree constraint is then applied to component-by-component projections of the data to investigate adherence to an evolutionary tree. The results highlight some aspects of Romance language speech that appear compatible with an evolutionary tree model but indicates that it would be inappropriate to model all features as such
Small optic suspensions for Advanced LIGO input optics and other precision optical experiments
We report on the design and performance of small optic suspensions developed
to suppress seismic motion of out-of-cavity optics in the Input Optics
subsystem of the Advanced LIGO interferometric gravitational wave detector.
These compact single stage suspensions provide isolation in all six degrees of
freedom of the optic, local sensing and actuation in three of them, and passive
damping for the other three
