    Science 2.0 Repositories

Information and communication technology (ICT) advances in research infrastructures are continuously changing the way research and scientific communication are performed. Scientists, funders, and organisations are moving the paradigm of Research Publishing well beyond traditional articles. The aim is to pursue an holistic approach where publishing includes any product (e.g. publications, datasets, experiments, software, web sites, blogs) resulting from a research activity and relevant to the interpretation, evaluation, and reuse of the activity or part of it. We show that the implementation of this vision is today mainly inspired by literature scientific communication workflows, which separate the “where” research is conducted from the “where” research is published and shared. We claim that this model cannot fit well with scientific communication practice envisaged in Science 2.0 settings and propose a new class of scientific data repositories, denominated “Science 2.0 Repositories” (SciRepos), as a possible solution. SciRepos address the data pub lishing issues by blurring the distinction between research life-cycle and research publishing. They enable effective scientific communication workflows by making research products creation and publishing occur “within” the research infrastructure and “during” the research activities. We present the benefits resulting from Publishing in SciRepos and define a Reference Model and a Reference Architecture for a SciRepo platform, a general purpose platform facilitating the realisation of a SciRepo over any ICT-based research infrastructure environment with limited costs and efforts if compared with from-scratch approaches

Are Scientific Data Repositories Coping with Research Data Publishing?

Research data publishing is intended as the release of research data to make it possible for practitioners to (re)use them according to “open science” dynamics. There are three main actors called to deal with research data publishing practices: researchers, publishers, and data repositories. This study analyses the solutions offered by generalist scientific data repositories, i.e., repositories supporting the deposition of any type of research data. These repositories cannot make any assumption on the application domain. They are actually called to face with the almost open ended typologies of data used in science. The current practices promoted by such repositories are analysed with respect to eight key aspects of data publishing, i.e., dataset formatting, documentation, licensing, publication costs, validation, availability, discovery and access, and citation. From this analysis it emerges that these repositories implement well consolidated practices and pragmatic solutions for literature repositories. These practices and solutions can not totally meet the needs of management and use of datasets resources, especially in a context where rapid technological changes continuously open new exploitation prospects

Data science: a game changer for science and innovation

AbstractThis paper shows data science's potential for disruptive innovation in science, industry, policy, and people's lives. We present how data science impacts science and society at large in the coming years, including ethical problems in managing human behavior data and considering the quantitative expectations of data science economic impact. We introduce concepts such as open science and e-infrastructure as useful tools for supporting ethical data science and training new generations of data scientists. Finally, this work outlines SoBigData Research Infrastructure as an easy-to-access platform for executing complex data science processes. The services proposed by SoBigData are aimed at using data science to understand the complexity of our contemporary, globally interconnected society

Dynamic User Interfaces construction for Virtual Research Environments

    No full text
Nowadays, the rapid evolution of technologies is preparing a considerable and wide-reaching change in practices governing research activities organizations, knowledge acquisition, communication and exploitation. Virtual Research Environments (VRE) lay at the core of this digital innovation. They provide collaborative frameworks enabling scientists to produce and exchange results with peers around the globe in cost-effective manner. In their most advanced realizations, VREs are distributed and dynamically created environments where a set of resources are assigned to a set of users, (i) via interfaces, (ii) for a limited timeframe, (iii) at little or no resource providers cost. A VRE is indeed designed to be a highly dynamic environment, resources which partake in a VRE can be very-large in number and change in time. Consequently, user interfaces (UI) for VREs should face the same variability and dynamicity by actively adapting themselves to the functionality relative to the services needed by their users, or available at a specific time. We propose an approach for VRE UI dynamic creation that is, generic, automatic, and promotes an effective usage of the available resources. We show how such approach has been adopted and validated in a rich framework for supporting the on-demand VRE creation. We discuss solutions for VRE User Interfaces development, facilitating the sharing and reuse of UI resources, i.e. user interface constituents, trying to reduce the developer effort as much as possible and lower costs
