    Medicinal Plants and Phenolic Compounds

    Medicinal plants were shown to play a significant role in curing many diseases of ancient times. The plant kingdom is truly a goldmine of potential drug compounds. Several earlier reviews and research studies summarized that the products from natural sources have contributed significantly to the discovery of drugs and health benefits for people. Moreover, it is believed that natural products are less deadly than synthetic medicines because of their plant origins. Medicinal plants are significant in the role of curing a variety of diseases and the properties that they possess for curing are related to the existence of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, anthocyanins and other phytochemicals. This chapter covers the effects of phenolic compound on plants and the importance of phenolic compounds for human health for prevention of various oxidative stress associated diseases

    Revisiting the impact of ESG on financial performance of FTSE350 UK firms: Static and dynamic panel data analysis

    This study re-examines the impact of ESG (economic, environmental, social, and corporate governance performance) on the financial performance of UK firms. Most recent sample of 351 firms from FTSE350 for the time period 2002–2018 is used. The study estimates the impact of total ESG and individual dimensions of ESG on corporate financial performance using static and dynamic panel data techniques, and it also examines the impact of high and low ESG on firm financial performance. Further, the study investigates the role of firm size as a moderator in the relationship between ESG and firm financial performance. The results of total ESG performance indicate that ESG has a positive and significant impact on firm financial performance. However, in the case of the individual ESG performance, the results are mixed. Overall, the results confirm that high ESG firms show high financial performance as compared to low ESG firms. Results indicate that firm size moderates the relationship between ESG performance and firm financial performance

    Emotional Exhaustion as Stressor agent for Job Stress in Call Centers: Empirical evidence from perspective of Job Satisfaction and Turnover Intention as Work Outcomes

    The purpose of the study is to analyze job burnout component emotional exhaustion as a probable stressor agent that causes job stress and their impact on job satisfaction and turnover intention as work outcomes. The scales were adapted from that measure to analyze the effect of emotional exhaustion causing job stress, also highlights the evidence in support of the conceptual model. Data was collected by the survey that generated 220 respondents. The sample chosen for this research are employees working in telecommunication call centers of Lahore city region in Pakistan. SPSS regression analysis was employed for data analysis. The results showed that emotional exhaustion carried negative and significant relation with job satisfaction (β= -.354,p<.05) and significant positive relation with turnover intention (β= .290, p<.05) also significant relation between dependent variables followed by mediating effect of two dimensions of job stress analyzed by PROCESS procedure of bootstrapping technique contained no and full mediation between emotional exhaustion in relation with job satisfaction and turnover intention respectively. Outcome from the conducted study depicted that stress did not affected the level of satisfaction of employees as they are well trained and informed that job stress is the part of their work activities in call centers and the stress in organizations is needed to be dealt with

    Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is officially a pandemic now. With around 30-40 % workforce working from home and around 30% unemployment expected, so far by analysts, it is becoming very important to understand the personal and professional impact that this pandemic is having on professionals.In the last weeks, alone many ICT companies have downsized, reduced pay, or stopped benefits in order to handle the economic strain caused by the pandemic while factories and manufacturing concerns have come to a halt. On a personal level, staying at home, isolation, unemployment, financial strain occurs that can cause numerous behavioral concerns. The aim of this paper is to do an exploratory study with a mix of auto ethnographic view and identify professional and personal effects both positive and negative due to the COVID-19 pandemic and repercussions for professionals. As COVID-19 is an ongoing pandemic, thereby to the best of our knowledge, no study has been conducted which explain the impact of COVID-19 on personal and professional lives with the qualitative context we adopted

    How Internship Experience Mediates Career Decision? Insight from Business Institutions

    This research paper aims to examine business graduates’ pre-employment decisions relevant to pursue a satisfied and successful career after going through internship training. Subjects were the students who have undergone through an internship program and data was analyzed by using SPSS software. A five point Likert Scale has been used to examine the relation of dependent variable person career (PC) fit and independent variables (job attributes, PO-fit and PJ-fit).The internees degree of perceived pay, benefits, promotion as related to future growth opportunities , job location, peers’ relationship, firm’s image and job duties as major factors and key criterion to pursue a satisfied and successful career .The results also indicate that person job (PJ) fit contributes more than person organization (PO) fit towards person career (PC) fit.Offering internship programs and trainings allows employers the opportunity of exploring full time fresh graduates pool and best talent to recruit

    Proportion of urinary tract infection in neonatal sepsis

    Background: Urinary tract infection (UTI) in neonates might be associated with bacteremia and congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT), that in complicated situations can lead to renal parenchymal scarring and chronic kidney disease. Aim: To determine occurrence of UTI in neonatal sepsis. Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted on 500 term, extramural hospitalized neonates, suspected to have infection underwent, a detailed history, physical examination and a comprehensive sepsis workup. The diagnosis of neonatal UTI was based, on positive urine culture, obtained by suprapubic aspiration (SPA).  Results: Out of 500 neonates included in our study (324 boys and 176 girls), blood culture was positive in 84 (36.5%) neonates in early-onset sepsis group (n=230), while in late-onset sepsis group (n=270) blood culture was positive in130 (48.1%), p-value < 0.05. In both early-onset sepsis (EOS) and late-onset sepsis (LOS) groups, blood culture was found to be positive in a greater proportion of male (41.3%) than female (29.3%) patients, p-value <0.05.  The most common organism isolated from blood and urine culture was Klebsiella, followed by E-coli. Urine culture was positive in 34 (6.8%) patients, among whom 29 (85%) culture-positive cases were from the LOS group, a p-value of <0.05.  Conclusions: UTI is not uncommon among the hospitalized neonates, and UTI evaluation among septic neonates can prove beneficial for the prevention of long-term sequelae of neonatal UTI

    HIGH FREQUENCY OF OSTEOPENIA IN YOUNG ADULTS OF KARACHI

    Background: Osteopenia or low bone density, generally considered the disease of the old, is now sneaking around the younger generation. The increase in frequency of low trauma fractures is raising an alarm. This study was aimed to explore the frequency of osteopenia amongst young adults in Karachi, Pakistan. Methods: Non-probability consecutive sampling was used to choose 116 subjects at Ziauddin University, Karachi, in January 2018. After informed consent participants underwent bone scans for measurement of bone mineral density on their calcaneus (bone in heel). Tocategorize osteopenia T-score between -1.0 and -2.5 was evaluated. All participants with T-score of -2.5 or below were identifiedas osteoporotic. The data were entered on IBM SPSS statistics version 20.0 and descriptive analysis was done. Results: Osteopenia was detected in 57 (49.1%) of the participants [42 (36.2%) male and 15 (12.9%) female] of which 38 (32.8%) belonged to aged 21 to 35 years. Osteoporosis was found in 20 (17.2%) of this group. In the older participants’ frequency of osteopenia and osteoporosis was 12.2% and 42.9% respectively. Chi square test indicated no significant association between age and bone scan results (p=0.432). Frequency of osteopenia was higher in males (56%) compared to females (36.6%) whereas, osteoporosis was higher in females (53.7%) than males (12%). Results showed statistically significant association (p>0.01) with gender and bone scan results. Conclusion: Almost half the young adults in our study classified for osteopenia. Lifestyle modification factors are hypothesized to play an important role towards this high frequency. Further studies should evaluate risk factors for osteopenia in younger population

    CHARACTERIZATION OF MICRO FLORA FROM COAL MINES OF BALUCHISTAN, PAKISTAN

    The coal sites of our country Pakistan especially Baluchistan and their micro flora have not been defined properly. However, it is thought to harbour a number of microbes including harmful, non-harmful gram positive, gram negative, acidophilic, alkaliphilic, halophiles, and thermophiles within itself. The proposed study aims to seek a cultural and diversified cataloguing of the entire micro flora present in the coal sites of Mach, Baluchistan. The study spreads to a timeline of 3 months and samples will be collected from Mach coal mine. Moreover, workers, who are suffering from lung diseases in particular were, will also be subjected to analysis to assess probable correlation with microbes. Total of 150 samples were collected in which 50 of coal dust samples were collected with sterilized swabs. 50 samples of airborne debris from mines sewerage water where collected in pre-sterilized Duran bottles. Moreover 50 sputum mine worker samples were collected in sterilized stomacher bag for isolation and correlation studies. Out of 150 samples we isolate different genera of kingdom monera which are related to coal mines and environment. Isolated microbes includes harmful, non-harmful gram positive, gram negative,acidophile, alkaliphilic, halophiles sulphur oxidising and thermophiles bacteria’s which perform different activities according to the atmosphere and offered nutrient’s .obligate acidophilic, heterotropic ,aerobic motile ,gram negative bacteria are generally found. Acidiothiobacillus species is major among them. Beside it, Pseudomonas, flavobacteriu species, shigella specie, vibrio parahaemolyticuc, Staphylococcal aureus and Escherichia coli colonies are also obtained. Microscopy performs for colony morphology. During microscopy we found different shapes of bacteria’s like rod, cocci, spring shape etc. Further more we perfume APi 20 kit test for some bacterial species and compile the results. The study concluded that coal mines are riche in microbial flora which is effective for coal miners and also for the GDP growth of the country. Somehow there are also harmful bacteria’s but they do not produce great impact on miner. Keywords: coal mine microbial flora , microscopy, biochemical test
