The Use of Rhetoric in Anti-Suffrage and Anti-Feminist Publications

After decades of struggling to gain the right to vote, women were finally granted that right with the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment on August 18, 1920. While it would seem that most, if not all, women would be in favor of gaining the right to vote, the women’s suffrage movement did not represent the wishes of all women within the United States. Scholarship in this area largely focuses on the historical developments of the suffrage movements, with the presence of female opponents of suffrage and anti-suffragist organizations receiving less attention.1 These anti-suffragists were vocal in their opposition to the suffragists who represented a threat to their ideal of womanhood. While female suffragists largely ignored them at that time, it is important to acknowledge their presence in American history

Using a Mixed Methods Approach to Study the Evolution of Party Platforms - 1960-2016

Every four years, members of political parties convene in order to craft platforms in which they articulate the positions of the parties on a plethora of different issues. While not widely read, the importance of these platforms cannot be understated. They provide a lens for us in order to view the ideological shifts of the parties and often serve as a mechanism by which to guide the legislative agendas of the parties. This dissertation examines Republican and Democratic platforms written between 1960-2016 using a mixed methods approach in order to evaluate the value of using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. This mixed methods approach consists of using results from computer-assisted textual analysis software along with data from the Manifesto Project and a manual reading of the platforms. These analyses are performed on the overall platforms prior to being adapted to focus on a single issue in the platform – the environment. These different approaches allow us to get a big picture examination of how the parties utilize specific rhetorical tools to make their case to their party base and the general public while also giving insights as to how the parties have shifted ideologically and in the types of issues that the parties have focused on. Additionally, a manual reading of portions of the platform dealing with the environment point to shortcomings of relying solely on computer-assisted textual analysis tools as well as data from the Manifesto Project

Finding Froebel in the environmental and economic climate of the 21st Century

This editorial for Part 2 of the Special Issue on the pedagogy of Friedrich Froebel situates the articles in the  context of economic pressures and environmental challenges in the Anthropocene. These different positions include environmental concerns, neoliberalism, and the fragility of how methods and curriculum issues can be interpreted, all which took us towards the complexity of life in the Anthropocene. ECORD NEWSLETTER 16The "GOLD" IODP Project aims to recover the complete history of the Gulf of Lion (25-30 Ma) with a specific focus on Global Climate and Sea-level Changes, Extreme Events, Margin formation, Natural Resources and the Deep Biosphere using dedicated drilling Platform (MSP, Joides and Chikyu). It should be emphasized that no academic drillings dealing with pre-5million years exist in the Mediterranean Sea

Phosphorylation of CENP-A on serine 7 does not control centromere function

    Get PDF
CENP-A is the histone H3 variant necessary to specify the location of all eukaryotic centromeres via its CENP-A targeting domain and either one of its terminal regions. In humans, several post-translational modifications occur on CENP-A, but their role in centromere function remains controversial. One of these modifications of CENP-A, phosphorylation on serine 7, has been proposed to control centromere assembly and function. Here, using gene targeting at both endogenous CENP-A alleles and gene replacement in human cells, we demonstrate that a CENP-A variant that cannot be phosphorylated at serine 7 maintains correct CENP-C recruitment, faithful chromosome segregation and long-term cell viability. Thus, we conclude that phosphorylation of CENP-A on serine 7 is dispensable to maintain correct centromere dynamics and function

Albumin impact on clinical practice and complications of ischemic stroke in patients with stroke

Background: Cerebrovascular disease is the third common leading cause of death after cancer and heart disease in the United States. Also cerebrovascular disease is the most common neurological disease which can lead to complications or mortality. The incidence of ischemic stroke increases with age, and almost two thirds of cases occur in people over 65 years. Albumin as a blood thinner to reduce blood viscosity and sufficient vasodilation in response to low oxygen increases blood flow in ischemic and normal brain. The aim of this study was to investigate the Albumin impact on clinical practice and complications of ischemic stroke in patients with stroke. Methods: This is a randomized clinical study that has been done on 100 patients with ischemic stroke included 54 male and 46 female referred to Alavi hospital in Ardabil. Patients with inclusion criteria randomly divided in two similar sample size groups. For case group we prescribed albumin 20% and for control group normal-saline. NIHSS questionnaire completed for each patient based on their interview and medical documents in hospital according the specialist doctor idea. Collected data analysed by statistical methods in SPSS.19.Results: From all patients, 41% have HTN, 30% Diabetes, 32% ischemic stroke type cortical in branch MCA and 14% in brain stem. The highest risk factor for stroke was in people with high blood pressure. The mean of NIHSS in the end of third month after intervention in the patients with cortical ischemia in albumin group with 24.8±5.1 was lower than placebo group with 31.3±3 and this difference was statistically significant (p = 0.012).Conclusions: Results showed that in cortical ischemic stroke there was a significant relationship between receiving albumin and decreasing NISHH score. But there was no significant relationship between receiving albumin and decreasing NISHH score in Lacunar and brain stem stroke

Raman spectroscopic study on the conformation of 11 S form acetylcholinesterase from Torpedo californica

AbstractVibrational Raman spectroscopy has been used to study the conformation of the 11 S form of acetylcholine-sterase from Torpedo californica. Secondary structure analysis by the method of Williams [(1983) J. Mol. Biol. 166, 581–603] shows 49% α-helical structure, 23% β-sheets, 11% turns and 15% undefined structure. Secondary structure estimates obtained for this enzyme by Raman spectroscopy and circular dichroism have been analyzed
