    A study of the fate of radiocarbon-labeled glucose and carbon dioxide in the acerola (West Indian Cherry) has shown that these substances follow patterns of conversion comparable to those observed in other plants. These substances were not preferentially incorporated into ascorbic acid by acerola fruit. Sucrose, several amino acids, and malic acid appear to compete successfully with ascorbic acid for the label from these precursors

    Nanoscale magnetic structure and properties of solution-derived self-assembled La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 islands

    The following article appeared in Journal of Applied Physics 111.2 (2012): 024307 and may be found at http://scitation.aip.org/content/aip/journal/jap/111/2/10.1063/1.3677985Strain-induced self-assembled La0.7Sr0.3MnO 3 nanoislands of lateral size 50-150 nm and height 10-40 nm have been grown on yttria-stabilized zirconia (001)-substrates from ultradiluted chemical solutions based on metal propionates. The nanoislands grow highly relaxed withstanding the epitaxial relation (001)LSMO[110]//(001) Ysz[010] and show bulk-like average magnetic properties in terms of Curie temperature and saturation magnetization. The interplay of the magnetocrystalline and shape anisotropy within the nanoisland ensemble results in an in-plane magnetic anisotropy with a magnetocrystalline constant K 1(150K) = -(5±1) kJ/m3 and in-plane easy axis along the [110] -La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 direction as measured, for the first time, through ferromagnetic resonance experiments. Magnetic force microscopy studies reveal the correlation between nanoisland size and its magnetic domain structure in agreement with micromagnetic simulations.     Enhanced tunable second harmonic generation from twistable interfaces and vertical superlattices in boron nitride homostructures

    Broken symmetries induce strong even-order nonlinear optical responses in materials and at interfaces. Unlike conventional covalently bonded nonlinear crystals, van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures feature layers that can be stacked at arbitrary angles, giving complete control over the presence or lack of inversion symmetry at a crystal interface. Here, we report highly tunable second harmonic generation (SHG) from nanomechanically rotatable stacks of bulk hexagonal boron nitride (BN) crystals and introduce the term twistoptics to describe studies of optical properties in twistable vdW systems. By suppressing residual bulk effects, we observe SHG intensity modulated by a factor of more than 50, and polarization patterns determined by moiré interface symmetry. Last, we demonstrate greatly enhanced conversion efficiency in vdW vertical superlattice structures with multiple symmetry-broken interfaces. Our study paves the way for compact twistoptics architectures aimed at efficient tunable frequency conversion and demonstrates SHG as a robust probe of buried vdW interfaces

    Submillimetric GPS distance measurement over short baselines: case study in inner consistency

    Distance determination in the open air with submillimetric accuracy is a challenging task usually carried out with the use of submillimetric distancemeters and costly observation campaigns. The present paper represents a first step in the research of the potential use of GPS for submillimetric distance determination for distances up to a few hundred metres consisting in the evaluation of GPS distance determination reproducibility. As will be concluded, reliable submillimetric precision is attainable after some hours of observation if the same equipment in both baseline ends is used, even considering that there still remain some long-term systematic effects of a few tenths of a millimetre. The need for precise absolute antenna calibration values is also shown to be critical for submillimetric distance reproducibility.This research is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (AYA2011-23232).     Network-based models for social recommender systems

    With the overwhelming online products available in recent years, there is an increasing need to filter and deliver relevant personalized advice for users. Recommender systems solve this problem by modeling and predicting individual preferences for a great variety of items such as movies, books or research articles. In this chapter, we explore rigorous network-based models that outperform leading approaches for recommendation. The network models we consider are based on the explicit assumption that there are groups of individuals and of items, and that the preferences of an individual for an item are determined only by their group memberships. The accurate prediction of individual user preferences over items can be accomplished by different methodologies, such as Monte Carlo sampling or Expectation-Maximization methods, the latter resulting in a scalable algorithm which is suitable for large datasets

    The effect of salts on the liquid–liquid phase equilibria of PEG600 + salt aqueous two-phase systems

    Six new ATPSs were prepared by combining polyethylene glycol PEG600 with potassium citrate, dipotassium hydrogen phosphate, sodium formate, potassium formate, sodium sulfate, and lithium sulfate. Complete phase diagrams, including the binodal curve and three tie-lines, were determined at 23 °C. The experimental data obtained for the binodal curve were successfully adjusted to the Merchuk equation, and the reliability of tie-line data was confirmed using the equations suggested by Othmer–Tobias and Bancroft. The ability of each ion to induce ATPS formation was investigated. Na+ proved to be more effective in ATPS formation than K+ and Li+. For potassium salts, the order observed for the effectiveness of the anions was: HPO42– > C6H5O73– > HCO2–. Regarding the sodium salts, it was found that SO42– is clearly more effective than HCO2–. The position of the ions in the Hofmeister series and their free energy of hydration (ΔGhyd) were used to explain the ability of the ions to induce PEG salting-out. Furthermore, the effective excluded volume (EEV) of the salts was determined and the following order was found: Na2SO4 > K2HPO4 > Li2SO4 > K3C6H5O7 > NaCHO2 > KCHO2.
