    Evaluating Activation and Absence of Negative Effect: Gamification and Escape Rooms for Learning

    Innovation has allowed for and developed new ways of teaching and learning. Gamification is among the new training methodologies, which is a didactic approach based on the game structure with an attractive component for students. Within gamification, flipped learning and problem-based learning, escape rooms can be found as a technical aspect, which is focused on providing enigmas and tracks for the various educational content that students have assimilated through learning based on problem solving. The aim of this study is to identify how the use of gamification with the use of educational escape rooms affects activation and absence of a negative effect on students. 61 Master students of the Autonomous City of Ceuta participated in this case study. They were divided into three study groups (1 control group; 2 experimental groups) that followed different formative actions (control group—traditional; experimental groups—escape rooms). To achieve the objectives, a mixed research design based on quantitative and qualitative techniques was followed. The instrument used for data collection was the GAMEX (Gameful Experience Scale). The results reveal that the students who had taken a gamified formative action through escape rooms obtained better assessment results in the indicators concerning motivation, teamwork, commitment, activation, and absence of a negative effect on the learning process than those with the traditional methodology

    Effects on Personal Factors Through Flipped Learning and Gamification as Combined Methodologies in Secondary Education

    Purpose: This study aims to analyze the effects of a flipped and gamified program on the autonomy, competence, relation with others, satisfaction/enjoyment, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and boredom of students of Physical Education. Method: The study used a control group and an experimental group to compare pretest and posttest data in both of them. Instruments used were the Basic Psychological Needs in Exercise Scale, Sport Motivation Scale, and Sport Satisfaction Instrument, all of them validated in academic literature. Results: On one hand, data indicated that autonomy has been increased with the application of these teaching methodologies. On the other hand, students’ satisfaction, enjoyment, and intrinsic motivation have improved based on the interaction with gamification and flipped learning. Finally, with all dimensions, it seems that academic performance has been improved, although not in a significative way. Discussion/Conclusion: Results of the study provide to educational researchers valuable information for a better understanding of how flipped learning and gamification influence personal performance of Physical Education students

    Active and Emerging Methodologies for Ubiquitous Education: Potentials of Flipped Learning and Gamification

    Introduction: Nowadays, education is immersed in a process of constant renewal due to the inference of two fundamental facts: The emergence of new technologies and the development of new active methodologies that lead the teaching and learning processes. Methods: A case study was developed to analyze the effects caused in these processes by the implementation of “flipped learning” and “gamification” as teaching models; after the implementation of each one, variables such as learning achievement, learning anxiety, motivation, and autonomy were compared. This work was carried out with secondary school subjects (n = 60) of an educational center of the Autonomous City of Ceuta. A descriptive experimental study was carried out. Gamification and flipped learning effects were compared to analyze both their potentials as educational methodologies. Results: The results show the benefits of both methodologies. All measured dimensions increased positively, in accordance with previous studies on the subject. Conclusion: The implementation of both methodologies in the classroom causes an improvement in the students’ learning processes, in their achievements, and in their enthusiasm

    EhADH112 Is a Bro1 Domain-Containing Protein Involved in the Entamoeba histolytica Multivesicular Bodies Pathway

    EhADH112 is an Entamoeba histolytica Bro1 domain-containing protein, structurally related to mammalian ALIX and yeast BRO1, both involved in the Endosomal Sorting Complexes Required for Transport (ESCRT)-mediated multivesicular bodies (MVB) biogenesis. Here, we investigated an alternative role for EhADH112 in the MVB protein trafficking pathway by overexpressing 166 amino acids of its N-terminal Bro1 domain in trophozoites. Trophozoites displayed diminished phagocytosis rates and accumulated exogenous Bro1 at cytoplasmic vesicles which aggregated into aberrant complexes at late stages of phagocytosis, probably preventing EhADH112 function. Additionally, the existence of a putative E. histolytica ESCRT-III subunit (EhVps32) presumably interacting with EhADH112, led us to perform pull-down experiments with GST-EhVps32 and [35S]-labeled EhADH112 or EhADH112 derivatives, confirming EhVps32 binding to EhADH112 through its Bro1 domain. Our overall results define EhADH112 as a novel member of ESCRT-accessory proteins transiently present at cellular surface and endosomal compartments, probably contributing to MVB formation during phagocytosis

    REPRODUCCIÓN SEXUAL E INFLUENCIA DE SUSTRATOS EN EL DESARROLLO DE Malpighia glabra L. (MALPIGHIACEAE)

    Malpighia glabra, also known as “acerola”or “semeruco” within its wide distributionalrange, produces fruits that have high vitaminC content in their mature state. The objectiveof this study was to reproduce this speciesby planting seeds in germination trays usingthe following substrates: commercial peatmoss, andosol, and vertisol. The percentageof germination was calculated, the numberof germinated seeds per tray cavity ineach substrate was quantified, and growthfrom emergence of the hypocotyl to theseedling was measured. The results showedheterogeneous germination percentagesbetween substrates. The analysis of variancepresented significant differences, showingthe commercial substrate to be the best forgermination and vertisol to yield the highestgrowth rate. We can conclude that “acerola”has the capacity to germinate in any ofthese three substrates; nevertheless, the bestresults are obtained using a commercialsubstrate.Malpighia glabra, también conocidacomo acerola o semeruco dentro de suamplia distribución produce frutos quecuando alcanzan el estado de madurezson muy ricos en vitamina C. El presenteestudio tuvo como objetivo el reproduciresta especie mediante la siembra desemillas en charolas germinadoras bajocondiciones de vivero y utilizando trestipos de sustratos comerciales “peat moss”,andosol y vertisol. Se registró el porcentajede germinación, se cuantificó el númerode semillas germinadas por cavidad enlas charolas por sustrato, y se midió elcrecimiento, a partir de la emergencia delhipocótilo hasta plántula. Los resultadosmostraron una heterogeneidad en losporcentajes de germinación entre sustratos.El análisis de varianza mostró diferenciassignificativas, siendo el sustrato comercialel mejor para la germinación; la mayor tasade crecimiento se presentó con el sustratovertisol. Podemos concluir que la acerolatiene la capacidad de germinar en cualquierade los tres sustratos, sin embargo, el sustratocomercial es donde se obtienen mejoresresultados

    Analyzing Typical Mobile Gestures in mHealth Applications for Users with Down Syndrome

    Mobile technology has provided many advantages for all members of the Information Society. Communication, Organization, Transportation, Health, and Entertainment are just a few areas of mobile technology application. Nevertheless, there are still some people who find difficulties using it. Although there are a lot of applications of mHealth available for almost any kind of mobile device, there is still a lack of understanding and attending users’ needs, especially those of users with disabilities. People with Down syndrome have the potential to function as active members of our society, taking care of themselves and their own, having jobs, voting, and so on, but their physical limitations prevent them from handling correctly technological tools that could enhance their performance, including mobile technology. In this paper, we had analyzed how suitable the mHealth applications are for users with Down syndrome. We tested 24 users and analyzed their physical performance in fine-motor movements while developing a set of tasks over a mHealth application. Results showed that the design of a mHealth application for users with Down syndrome must center its interaction with simple gestures as tap and swipe avoiding more complex ones as spread and rotate. This research is a starting point to understand the fundamentals of people with Down syndrome interacting with mobile technology

    Visualizing the Intellectual Structure and Evolution of Intelligent Transportation Systems: A Systematic Analysis of Research Themes and Trends

    ording to the "i"United Nations"/i", 70% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050. This growth will be reflected in the demand for better services that should be adjusted to the collective and individual needs of the population. Governments and organizations are working on defining and implementing strategies that will enable them to respond to these challenges. The main challenges are related to transport and its management, considering transportation as a core issue in the economy, sustainability, and development of the regions. In this way, the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) play a key role in the response to these scenarios, being that they are the framework where the new hardware and software tools are integrated, allowing an efficient development of transportation systems management, attending to aspects such as: traffic management, communications between vehicles and infrastructures, and security, among others. Nevertheless, the concept of ITS evolves rapidly so it is necessary to understand its evolution. To do that, the current research develops a thematic analysis of ITS in literature, evaluating the intellectual structure and its evolution using "i"SciMAT"/i", quantifying the main bibliometric performance indicators, and identifying the main research areas, authors, journals, and countries. To this purpose, the publications related to ITS from 1993 to 2019 available in the "i"Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection"/i" were retrieved (7649 publications) and analyzed. Finally, one of the main results is the latest research themes map of ITS, considering its intellectual structure, evolution, and relationship. It assists in the definition and implementation of strategies, the identification of the scientific, academic, and business opportunities, and future research lines to consolidate the role of ITS in the new city models.
