    Brain edema : a valid endpoint for measuring hepatic encephalopathy?

    Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a major complication of liver failure/disease which frequently develops during the progression of end-stage liver disease. This metabolic neuropsychiatric syndrome involves a spectrum of symptoms, including cognition impairment, attention deficits and motor dysfunction which eventually can progress to coma and death. Pathologically, HE is characterized by swelling of the astrocytes which consequently leads to brain edema, a common feature found in patients with acute liver failure (ALF) as well as in cirrhotic patients suffering from HE. The pathogenic factors involved in the onset of astrocyte swelling and brain edema in HE are unresolved. However, the role of astrocyte swelling/brain edema in the development of HE remains ambiguous and therefore measuring brain edema as an endpoint to evaluate HE is questioned. The following review will determine the effect of astrocyte swelling and brain edema on neurological function, discuss the various possible techniques to measure brain edema and lastly to propose a number of neurobehavioral tests to evaluate HE

    Morphological Parameters Associated with Ruptured Posterior Communicating Aneurysms

    The rupture risk of unruptured intracranial aneurysms is known to be dependent on the size of the aneurysm. However, the association of morphological characteristics with ruptured aneurysms has not been established in a systematic and location specific manner for the most common aneurysm locations. We evaluated posterior communicating artery (PCoA) aneurysms for morphological parameters associated with aneurysm rupture in that location. CT angiograms were evaluated to generate 3-D models of the aneurysms and surrounding vasculature. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to evaluate morphological parameters including aneurysm volume, aspect ratio, size ratio, distance to ICA bifurcation, aneurysm angle, vessel angles, flow angles, and vessel-to-vessel angles. From 2005–2012, 148 PCoA aneurysms were treated in a single institution. Preoperative CTAs from 63 patients (40 ruptured, 23 unruptured) were available and analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that smaller volume (p = 0.011), larger aneurysm neck diameter (0.048), and shorter ICA bifurcation to aneurysm distance (p = 0.005) were the most strongly associated with aneurysm rupture after adjusting for all other clinical and morphological variables. Multivariate subgroup analysis for patients with visualized PCoA demonstrated that larger neck diameter (p = 0.018) and shorter ICA bifurcation to aneurysm distance (p = 0.011) were significantly associated with rupture. Intracerebral hemorrhage was associated with smaller volume, larger maximum height, and smaller aneurysm angle, in addition to lateral projection, male sex, and lack of hypertension. We found that shorter ICA bifurcation to aneurysm distance is significantly associated with PCoA aneurysm rupture. This is a new physically intuitive parameter that can be measured easily and therefore be readily applied in clinical practice to aid in the evaluation of patients with PCoA aneurysms

    Corrosão pode ser definida como a deterioração de materiais, geralmente metálicos, por ação física, química ou eletroquímica do meio. Dentre os diversos materiais que podem sofrer corrosão, o aço carbono é o mais utilizado na indústria. Enaminoésteres são compostos considerados potenciais inibidores de corrosão devido a presença de grupos acila, amino e ligação dupla. Neste trabalho, três enaminoésteres foram sintetizados, derivados da anilina, benzilamina e fenetilamina, e sua atividade anticorrosiva avaliada através de experimentos eletroquímicos: Polarização Potenciodinâmica (PP), Resistência à Polarização Linear (RPL) e Espectroscopia de Impedância Eletroquímica (EIE). Cálculos teóricos foram utilizados para calcular a energia do orbital de fronteira HOMO (EHOMO), LUMO (ELUMO), a diferença de energia entre os orbitais (?ELUMO-HOMO) e momento de dipolo (µ). O derivado da fenetilamina apresentou melhor eficiência de inibição da corrosão com 90 e 92% pelas técnicas de EIE e RPL, respectivamente, correlacionado com o estudo de modelagem molecular que mostrou o menor valor de ?ELUMO-HOMO e maior momento de dipolo

    Corporate governance and financial constraints on strategic turnarounds

    The paper extends the Robbins and Pearce (1992) two-stage turnaround response model to include governance factors. In addition to the retrenchment and recovery, the paper proposes the addition of a realignment stage, referring specifically to the re-alignment of expectations of principal and agent groups. The realignment stage imposes a threshold that must be crossed before the retrenchment and hence recovery stage can be entered. Crossing this threshold is problematic to the extent that the interests of governance-stakeholder groups diverge in a crisis situation. The severity of the crisis impacts on the bases of strategy contingent asset valuation leading to the fragmentation of stakeholder interests. In some cases the consequence may be that management are prevented from carrying out turnarounds by governance constraints. The paper uses a case study to illustrate these dynamics, and like the Robbins and Pearce study, it focuses on the textile industry. A longitudinal approach is used to show the impact of the removal of governance constraints. The empirical evidence suggests that such financial constraints become less serious to the extent that there is a functioning market for corporate control. Building on governance research and turnaround literature, the paper also outlines the general case necessary and sufficient conditions for successful turnarounds

    Point source in a phononic grating: stop bands give rise to phonon-focusing caustics

    We use locally-excited gigahertz surface phonon wavepackets in microscopic line structures of different pitches to reveal profound anisotropy in the radiation pattern of a point source in a grating. Time-domain data obtained by an ultrafast optical imaging technique and by numerical simulations are Fourier transformed to obtain frequency-filtered real-space acoustic field patterns and k-space phononic band structure. The numerically-obtained k-space images are processed to reveal an intriguing double-horn structure in the lowest-order group-velocity surface, which explains the observed non-propagation sectors bounded by caustics, noted at frequencies above the bottom of the first stop band. We account for these phonon-focusing effects, analogous to collimation effects previously observed in two- and three-dimensional lattices, with a simple analytical model of the band structure based on a plane wave expansion. As the frequency is increased, a transition to dominant waveguiding effects along the lines is also documented

    Establishing Foundation Archives: A Reader and Guide to First Steps

    This publication is an anthology of papers presented at a conference held at the Rockefeller Archive Center in January 1990, and sponsored by the Council on Foundations. This collaboration of the Archive Center and the Council provided a rare opponunity for foundations to learn both why preserving documents is imponant and how several foundations have approached finding a repository or setting up and managing an archives. Participants in the conference had the added privilege of conferring with experts and seeing an operating archive as they toured the Rockefeller Archive Center.Foundations are institutions that are shaping private initiatives for the public good, so documenting this aspect of American society falls uniquely under the stewardship of the organizations themselves. Foundation documents often provide the only surviving records of the important contributions of nonprofits and foundations to civic life. These records will help to inform future judgments and ensure that the history of the field is not lost. The publication of this volume was intended to make the information shared at the conference more widely available and to provide an entry point and a primer for foundations as they begin their records and archives journey
