Directionally asymmetric self-assembly of cadmium sulfide nanotubes using porous alumina nanoreactors: Need for chemohydrodynamic instability at the nanoscale
We explore nanoscale hydrodynamical effects on synthesis and self-assembly of
cadmium sulfide nanotubes oriented along one direction. These nanotubes are
synthesized by horizontal capillary flow of two different chemical reagents
from opposite directions through nanochannels of porous anodic alumina which
are used primarily as nanoreactors. We show that uneven flow of different
chemical precursors is responsible for directionally asymmetric growth of these
nanotubes. On the basis of structural observations using scanning electron
microscopy, we argue that chemohydrodynamic convective interfacial instability
of multicomponent liquid-liquid reactive interface is necessary for sustained
nucleation of these CdS nanotubes at the edges of these porous nanochannels
over several hours. However, our estimates clearly suggest that classical
hydrodynamics cannot account for the occurrence of such instabilities at these
small length scales. Therefore, we present a case which necessitates further
investigation and understanding of chemohydrodynamic fluid flow through
nanoconfined channels in order to explain the occurrence of such interfacial
instabilities at nanometer length scales.Comment: 26 pages, 6 figures; http://www.iiserpune.ac.in/researchhighlight
Stochastic theory of large-scale enzyme-reaction networks: Finite copy number corrections to rate equation models
Chemical reactions inside cells occur in compartment volumes in the range of
atto- to femtolitres. Physiological concentrations realized in such small
volumes imply low copy numbers of interacting molecules with the consequence of
considerable fluctuations in the concentrations. In contrast, rate equation
models are based on the implicit assumption of infinitely large numbers of
interacting molecules, or equivalently, that reactions occur in infinite
volumes at constant macroscopic concentrations. In this article we compute the
finite-volume corrections (or equivalently the finite copy number corrections)
to the solutions of the rate equations for chemical reaction networks composed
of arbitrarily large numbers of enzyme-catalyzed reactions which are confined
inside a small sub-cellular compartment. This is achieved by applying a
mesoscopic version of the quasi-steady state assumption to the exact
Fokker-Planck equation associated with the Poisson Representation of the
chemical master equation. The procedure yields impressively simple and compact
expressions for the finite-volume corrections. We prove that the predictions of
the rate equations will always underestimate the actual steady-state substrate
concentrations for an enzyme-reaction network confined in a small volume. In
particular we show that the finite-volume corrections increase with decreasing
sub-cellular volume, decreasing Michaelis-Menten constants and increasing
enzyme saturation. The magnitude of the corrections depends sensitively on the
topology of the network. The predictions of the theory are shown to be in
excellent agreement with stochastic simulations for two types of networks
typically associated with protein methylation and metabolism.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures; published in The Journal of Chemical Physic
Gravitational Properties of Monopole Spacetimes Near the Black Hole Threshold
Although nonsingular spacetimes and those containing black holes are
qualitatively quite different, there are continuous families of configurations
that connect the two. In this paper we use self-gravitating monopole solutions
as tools for investigating the transition between these two types of
spacetimes. We show how causally distinct regions emerge as the black hole
limit is achieved, even though the measurements made by an external observer
vary continuously. We find that near-critical solutions have a naturally
defined entropy, despite the absence of a true horizon, and that this has a
clear connection with the Hawking-Bekenstein entropy. We find that certain
classes of near-critical solutions display naked black hole behavior, although
they are not truly black holes at all. Finally, we present a numerical
simulation illustrating how an incident pulse of matter can induce the
dynamical collapse of a monopole into an extremal black hole. We discuss the
implications of this process for the third law of black hole thermodynamics.Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures RevTe
The evolution of mass loaded supernova remnants: II. Temperature dependent mass injection rates
We investigate the evolution of spherically symmetric supernova remnants in which mass loading takes place due to conductively driven evaporation of embedded clouds. Numerical simulations reveal significant differences between the evolution of conductively mass loaded and the ablatively mass loaded remnants studied in Paper I. A main difference is the way in which conductive mass loading is extinguished at fairly early times, once the interior temperature of the remnant falls below ~ 107 K. Thus, at late times remnants that ablatively mass load are dominated by loaded mass and thermal energy, while those that conductively mass load are dominated by swept-up mass and kinetic energy. Simple approximations to the remnant evolution, complementary to those in Paper I, are given
Exploring how material cues drive sensorimotor prediction across different levels of autistic-like traits
This is the final version. Available from Springer (part of Springer Nature) via the DOI in this record.Recent research proposes that sensorimotor difficulties, such as those experienced by many autistic people, may arise from atypicalities in prediction. Accordingly, we examined the relationship between non-clinical autistic-like traits and sensorimotor prediction in the material-weight illusion, where prior expectations derived from material cues typically bias one’s perception and action. Specifically, prediction-related tendencies in perception of weight, gaze patterns, and lifting actions were probed using a combination of self-report, eye-tracking, motion-capture, and force-based measures. No prediction-related associations between autistic-like traits and sensorimotor control emerged for any of these variables. Follow-up analyses, however, revealed that greater autistic-like traits were correlated with reduced adaptation of gaze with changes in environmental uncertainty. These findings challenge proposals of gross predictive atypicalities in autistic people, but suggest that the dynamic integration of prior information and environmental statistics may be related to autistic-like traits. Further research into this relationship is warranted in autistic populations, to assist the development of future movement-based coaching methods.Economic and Social Research Counci
How accurate are the non-linear chemical Fokker-Planck and chemical Langevin equations?
The chemical Fokker-Planck equation and the corresponding chemical Langevin
equation are commonly used approximations of the chemical master equation.
These equations are derived from an uncontrolled, second-order truncation of
the Kramers-Moyal expansion of the chemical master equation and hence their
accuracy remains to be clarified. We use the system-size expansion to show that
chemical Fokker-Planck estimates of the mean concentrations and of the variance
of the concentration fluctuations about the mean are accurate to order
for reaction systems which do not obey detailed balance and at
least accurate to order for systems obeying detailed balance,
where is the characteristic size of the system. Hence the chemical
Fokker-Planck equation turns out to be more accurate than the linear-noise
approximation of the chemical master equation (the linear Fokker-Planck
equation) which leads to mean concentration estimates accurate to order
and variance estimates accurate to order . This
higher accuracy is particularly conspicuous for chemical systems realized in
small volumes such as biochemical reactions inside cells. A formula is also
obtained for the approximate size of the relative errors in the concentration
and variance predictions of the chemical Fokker-Planck equation, where the
relative error is defined as the difference between the predictions of the
chemical Fokker-Planck equation and the master equation divided by the
prediction of the master equation. For dimerization and enzyme-catalyzed
reactions, the errors are typically less than few percent even when the
steady-state is characterized by merely few tens of molecules.Comment: 39 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in J. Chem. Phy
Characterization of mRNA Polyadenylation in the Apicomplexa
Messenger RNA polyadenylation is a universal aspect of gene expression in eukaryotes. In well-established model organisms, this process is mediated by a conserved complex of 15–20 subunits. To better understand this process in apicomplexans, a group of unicellular parasites that causes serious disease in humans and livestock, a computational and high throughput sequencing study of the polyadenylation complex and poly(A) sites in several species was conducted. BLAST-based searches for orthologs of the human polyadenylation complex yielded clear matches to only two—poly(A) polymerase and CPSF73—of the 19 proteins used as queries in this analysis. As the human subunits that recognize the AAUAAA polyadenylation signal (PAS) were not immediately obvious, a computational analysis of sequences adjacent to experimentally-determined apicomplexan poly(A) sites was conducted. The results of this study showed that there exists in apicomplexans an A-rich region that corresponds in position to the AAUAAA PAS. The set of experimentally-determined sites in one species, Sarcocystis neurona, was further analyzed to evaluate the extent and significance of alternative poly(A) site choice in this organism. The results showed that almost 80% of S. neurona genes possess more than one poly(A) site, and that more than 780 sites showed differential usage in the two developmental stages–extracellular merozoites and intracellular schizonts–studied. These sites affected more than 450 genes, and included a disproportionate number of genes that encode membrane transporters and ribosomal proteins. Taken together, these results reveal that apicomplexan species seem to possess a poly(A) signal analogous to AAUAAA even though genes that may encode obvious counterparts of the AAUAAA-recognizing proteins are absent in these organisms. They also indicate that, as is the case in other eukaryotes, alternative polyadenylation is a widespread phenomenon in S. neurona that has the potential to impact growth and development

Perhitungan Ongkos Produksi Mesin Pencacah Rumput Pakan Ternak Tipe Amp 1000
In a machinery industry, to know the exact production cost of machine or machine component is essential. Using the data of production cost, the selling price of the product or the value of product making project can be calculated, then the profit can be determined. This research aim to calculate the total production cost of grass chopper machine, then using the result to determine the selling price and the profit. From the performed calculation we obtain that the selling price of the machine is Rp 9.234.016 per unit. This price is cheaper dan market price which has the value of Rp 13.300.000 per unit. Therefore, the net profit of this product is Rp. 1.995.000
Emergence of long memory in stock volatility from a modified Mike-Farmer model
The Mike-Farmer (MF) model was constructed empirically based on the
continuous double auction mechanism in an order-driven market, which can
successfully reproduce the cubic law of returns and the diffusive behavior of
stock prices at the transaction level. However, the volatility (defined by
absolute return) in the MF model does not show sound long memory. We propose a
modified version of the MF model by including a new ingredient, that is, long
memory in the aggressiveness (quantified by the relative prices) of incoming
orders, which is an important stylized fact identified by analyzing the order
flows of 23 liquid Chinese stocks. Long memory emerges in the volatility
synthesized from the modified MF model with the DFA scaling exponent close to
0.76, and the cubic law of returns and the diffusive behavior of prices are
also produced at the same time. We also find that the long memory of order
signs has no impact on the long memory property of volatility, and the memory
effect of order aggressiveness has little impact on the diffusiveness of stock
prices.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures and 1 tabl
