Corporate Governance: The Revival of an Academic, Professional and Policy Field
This paper explores the basic concepts of corporate governance in relation to its intellectual
foundations and historical development. The basic assumption relies on the fact that the
reinforcement of corporate governance as an academic, professional, and policy field is a
consequence of the many corporate failures that have occurred in recent years, mainly since
2002. Most theoretical developments for this new moment in history have been borrowed from
the same academics and practitioners that reflected and worked on the field after the 1929
economic crash, with deep origin on general social scientific research. In addition, corporate
governance is growing as a distinctive business function as well as a set of global prescriptions
that impact business activities across industries and cultures. The role of the board of directors
and the ideas on power and accountability remain critical issues in the new 21st century corporate
governance debates
The effects of news authorship, exclusiveness and media type in readers’ paying intent for online news: An experimental study
This study explores how news authorship, exclusiveness, and media type affect readers’ paying intent for digital contents. A web-based experiment involving 602 Spanish adults reveals that authorship (prestigious journalist), exclusiveness, and media type (legacy media and new media over unknown media) increase readers’ economic value assessments of online news. In addition, our results show that the interaction between authorship and media type is affected by the level of news exclusiveness: when an online article is written by a prestigious journalist and is exclusive, readers’ heuristic assessments of its economic value are biased toward new media over legacy ones, and thus privilege the former and penalize the latter in their pecuniary evaluations. These results might point to a change in readers’ consumption patterns, favoring the brand values, and news production processes of new media over legacy ones
How advertising affects quality perception of public service television? A comparison of two surveys in Spain (2008 and 2012)
This paper aims at providing new insights about audiences’ opinions concerning the role of advertising and its relation with the perceived quality of TV channels. It analyses Spanish audience's perception of quality of public service broadcasters TVE1 and La 2 before and after the advertising withdrawal in 2010. The goal is identifying if the advertising removal is perceived as an improvement of the quality of TVE. The first conclusion is that a vast majority of the viewers find the channels more attractive now without any advertising than before having it. In addition, gender and age are not significant variables in order to affect this opinion. But the audience educational level does impact their perception: those less educated have a significantly better opinion about the advertising withdrawal than others who are more educated. Both national public service channels (TVE1 and La 2) have improved significantly their quality perception when comparing 2008 and 2012 surveys. They are the only two channels within the Spanish market to obtain a better quality assessment. In fact, all channels tend to maintain or reduce their quality perception in the 2008–2012 time period
In this article, we will analyse the effects of digitalisation and
convergence, both in the world of television and in the evolution of business models for firms in this sector. We will also
refer to the convergence of business and technology in new
intermediaries in the audiovisual market. Later on we will describe the public’s increasingly important role and, finally, we
will examine the possible scenarios for Spain’s audiovisual
sector in the second decade of this century
Introduction: This research article examines the sociodemographic profile of Spanish news consumers in the last decade.
Methods: The study is based on ten surveys conducted by the Centre for Sociological Research (CIS, according to its initials in Spanish) between 2006 and 2017, on samples ranging from 2,455 to 3,191 participants, to determine whether sociodemographic profiles of news consumers are different across media platforms and whether they can efficiently predict news consumption.
Results: It is concluded that the Internet has increased the consumption of print and digital newspapers. News consumption in radio and television is so widespread that the selected sociodemographic variables do not allow us to detect noticeable differences. However, newspaper readers are predominantly male, urban, middle-aged, middle and upper class, and highly educated. Internet news consumers basically match the previous profile, except in terms of age, as they are younger. In the case of newspaper and Internet news, the variables that predict their consumption more efficiently are education level, female sex (negative correlation) and social class (positive correlation). Finally, the correlation coefficients between news consumption in all three media platforms are significant, but not very high
