Synthesis and characterisation of LK-99
Recently, two arXiv preprints (arXiv:2307.12008, arXiv:2307.12037) reported
signatures of superconductivity above room temperature and at ambient pressure,
striking worldwide experimental research efforts to replicate the results3-7,
as well as theoretical attempts to explain the purported superconductivity8-12.
The material of interest has chemical formula PbCu(PO)O,
where , and was named by the authors as LK-99. It belongs to lead
apatite family, and was synthesised from two precursors, lanarkite
(PbSOPbO) and copper phosphide (CuP). Here we performed a
systematic study on LK-99, starting from solid-state synthesis, followed by
characterisation and transport measurements. We did not observe any signatures
of superconductivity in our samples of LK-99
Machine learning approach to genome of two-dimensional materials with flat electronic bands
Many-body physics of electron-electron correlations plays a central role in
condensed mater physics, it governs a wide range of phenomena, stretching from
superconductivity to magnetism, and is behind numerous technological
applications. To explore this rich interaction-driven physics, two-dimensional
(2D) materials with flat electronic bands provide a natural playground thanks
to their highly localised electrons. Currently, thousands of 2D materials with
computed electronic bands are available in open science databases, awaiting
such exploration. Here we used a new machine learning algorithm combining both
supervised and unsupervised machine intelligence to automate the otherwise
daunting task of materials search and classification, to build a genome of 2D
materials hosting flat electronic bands. To this end, a feedforward artificial
neural network was employed to identify 2D flat band materials, which were then
classified by a bilayer unsupervised learning algorithm. Such a hybrid approach
of exploring materials databases allowed us to reveal completely new material
classes outside the known flat band paradigms, offering new systems for
in-depth study on their electronic interactions

The object of research is transparent conductive coating based on fluorine doped tin oxide deposited on silica float glass by the pyrolytic method. However, both in the manufacturing process of such a coating and in the process of its operation, degradation of its electrically conductive properties is observed. This may be due to changes in the structure of the coating under the influence of certain technological and operational factors, namely: process temperature, holding time, gas environment during the application and operation of a transparent electrically conductive coating. Studies have confirmed a significant increase in electrical conductivity. They also found a slight decrease in the transmittance of transparent oxide-tin films obtained with the introduction of ammonium fluoride as a dopant during the pyrolysis of 1M alcohol solutions of Sn2+ and Sn4+chlorides and are widely used as precursors for the content of such coatings. So, with a ratio of Sn4+/F=10 in working solutions, a minimum of specific surface resistance was fixed at 32 Ohm/m2. At the same time, a decrease in the value of the averaged transmittance in the optical wavelength range of 0.2-6.0 μm by 51 %, and in its visible part (0.4-0.8 μm) by 11 %. It is shown that thermal degradation of the coating is a significant factor in increasing the resistance values both in the technological process and during operational impacts. The results obtained indicate that reheating to temperatures above 450 °C leads to the appearance of the phenomenon of thermal degradation of the electrically conductive properties of the coating. So, during a 1-hour exposure at a temperature of 550 °C, the increase in specific surface resistance increases by 2 times and is fixed at 68 Ohm/m2 after complete cooling. Repeated heating cycles with the indicated parameters lead to a significantly lesser effect, which may indicate stabilization of the processes that occur during thermal destruction of the electrically conductive coating. Unusual suppression of the superconducting energy gap and critical temperature in atomically thin NbSe2
It is well known that superconductivity in thin films is generally suppressed
with decreasing thickness. This suppression is normally governed by either
disorder-induced localization of Cooper pairs, weakening of Coulomb screening,
or generation and unbinding of vortex-antivortex pairs as described by the
Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) theory. Defying general expectations,
few-layer NbSe2 - an archetypal example of ultrathin superconductors - has been
found to remain superconducting down to monolayer thickness. Here we report
measurements of both the superconducting energy gap and critical temperature in
high-quality monocrystals of few-layer NbSe2, using planar-junction tunneling
spectroscopy and lateral transport. We observe a fully developed gap that
rapidly reduces for devices with the number of layers N < 5, as does their
ctitical temperature. We show that the observed reduction cannot be explained
by disorder, and the BKT mechanism is also excluded by measuring its transition
temperature that for all N remains very close to Tc. We attribute the observed
behavior to changes in the electronic band structure predicted for mono- and
bi- layer NbSe2 combined with inevitable suppression of the Cooper pair density
at the superconductor-vacuum interface. Our experimental results for N > 2 are
in good agreement with the dependences of the gap and Tc expected in the latter
case while the effect of band-structure reconstruction is evidenced by a
stronger suppression of the gap and the disappearance of its anisotropy for N =
2. The spatial scale involved in the surface suppression of the density of
states is only a few angstroms but cannot be ignored for atomically thin
superconductors.Comment: 21 pages, including supporting informatio
Development of a rangefinding method for determining the coordinates of targets by a network of radar stations in counter-battery warfare
The increase in the accuracy of determining the coordinates of targets is explained by the use of a network of counter-battery radar stations and the rangefinding method for determining the coordinates of targets. The main advantage of using the rangefinding method for determining the coordinates of targets in a network of counter-battery radar stations is to ensure the required accuracy in determining the coordinates of targets without using accurate measurement of angular coordinates. The minimum geometry of the system, which ensures the use of the rangefinding method for determining coordinates, is given. The method of determining the coordinates of targets by a network of counter-battery radar stations has been improved. In contrast to the known ones, information about the range to the target is additionally used in a spatially distributed network of radar stations for counter-battery combat. The boundaries of the working zones of the network of two and three counter-battery radar stations are calculated. The features of creating a continuous strip using the rangefinding method for determining the coordinates of the target are considered. Statistical modeling of the rangefinding method for determining the plane coordinates of the target has been carried out.
It has been established that the use of the rangefinding method ensures the determination of the planar coordinates of the target in a sector of at least 120°. The targets are at a distance of direct radio visibility in relation to the counter-battery radar. The root-mean-square error in determining the target range in this case is no more than 50 m. It has been established that the creation of continuous bands of a low-altitude radar field at a certain height is possible by arranging radar stations in a line. In this case, the distance between the counter-battery radar stations should be no more than half the target detection range at this heigh
Dimensional reduction, quantum Hall effect and layer parity in graphite films
The quantum Hall effect (QHE) originates from discrete Landau levels forming
in a two-dimensional (2D) electron system in a magnetic field. In three
dimensions (3D), the QHE is forbidden because the third dimension spreads
Landau levels into multiple overlapping bands, destroying the quantisation.
Here we report the QHE in graphite crystals that are up to hundreds of atomic
layers thick - thickness at which graphite was believed to behave as a 3D bulk
semimetal. We attribute the observation to a dimensional reduction of electron
dynamics in high magnetic fields, such that the electron spectrum remains
continuous only in the direction of the magnetic field, and only the last two
quasi-one-dimensional (1D) Landau bands cross the Fermi level. In sufficiently
thin graphite films, the formation of standing waves breaks these 1D bands into
a discrete spectrum, giving rise to a multitude of quantum Hall plateaux.
Despite a large number of layers, we observe a profound difference between
films with even and odd numbers of graphene layers. For odd numbers, the
absence of inversion symmetry causes valley polarisation of the standing-wave
states within 1D Landau bands. This reduces QHE gaps, as compared to films of
similar thicknesses but with even layer numbers because the latter retain the
inversion symmetry characteristic of bilayer graphene. High-quality graphite
films present a novel QHE system with a parity-controlled valley polarisation
and intricate interplay between orbital, spin and valley states, and clear
signatures of electron-electron interactions including the fractional QHE below

Exfoliation of natural van der Waals heterostructures to a single unit cell thickness
Weak interlayer interactions in van der Waals crystals facilitate their mechanical exfoliation to monolayer and few-layer two-dimensional materials, which often exhibit striking physical phenomena absent in their bulk form. Here we utilize mechanical exfoliation to produce a two-dimensional form of a mineral franckeite and show that the phase segregation of chemical species into discrete layers at the sub-nanometre scale facilitates franckeite's layered structure and basal cleavage down to a single unit cell thickness. This behaviour is likely to be common in a wider family of complex minerals and could be exploited for a single-step synthesis of van der Waals heterostructures, as an alternative to artificial stacking of individual two-dimensional crystals. We demonstrate p-type electrical conductivity and remarkable electrochemical properties of the exfoliated crystals, showing promise for a range of applications, and use the density functional theory calculations of franckeite's electronic band structure to rationalize the experimental results
