Functional results were good or excellent in 95 of the 135 cases (70,3 %). Radiological results were good in 78 of the 135 patients (57,8 %). In view of the high percentage of both clinical and radio- logical failures observed in our casuistry, we think that the method must be used cautiously, using a careful technique that avoids the complications related to its utilization

We report 185 cases of distal radius fractures treated by closed reduction and percutaneous Kirschner wire fixation. Final functional results were good or excellent in 156 of the 185 cases (84,3%). In view of the results, we think that the method is simple, useful and cheap, and must value its use in the majority of the distal radius fractures

We present a retrospective study of 35 cases of Monteggia fracture-dislocation treated between the year 1990 and 2003. The results were satisfactory in 29 patients, intermediate in 4 cases and poor in the 2 remaining ones. Conclusions: Treatment of this injury must be orthopaedic in childhood. In the adults, on the contrary, the treatment must be surgical and to consist of a stable osteosynthesis of the fracture of the ulna with a DCP type plate. Reduction of the head of the radius dislocation must be always tried by orthopaedic methods since the results like that obtained are better. If it is not possible, the open reduction can be tried, avoiding providing that there is possible the resection of the radial head. On the other hand, diagnosis and treatment must fulfil early to be able to obtain a good functional result

Los mejores resultados se obtuvieron en el grupo de casos tratados con placa palmar (90 % de resultados satisfactorios).A total of 67 cases of B3 type fracture of the distal radius treated in our Department are presented. A volar plate was used as fixation method in 30 cases, Kirschner wire in 19 cases, external fixator in 17 cases, and external fixator plus Kirschner wire in 1 case. The best results were obtained in the group of cases treated with a volar plate (90 percent of sa- tisfactory results)

Estimation of PM10-bound As, Cd, Ni and Pb levels by means of statistical modelling: PLSR and ANN approaches

Air quality assessment regarding metals and metalloids using experimental measurements is expensive and time consuming due to the cost and time required for the analytical determination of the levels of these pollutants. According to the European Union (EU) Air Quality Framework Directive (Directive 2008/50/EC), other alternatives, such as objective estimation techniques, can be considered for ambient air quality assessment in zones and agglomerations where the level of pollutants is below a certain concentration value known as the lower assessment threshold. These conditions occur in urban areas in Cantabria (northern Spain). This work aims to estimate the levels of As, Cd, Ni and Pb in airborne PM10 at two urban sites in the Cantabria region (Castro Urdiales and Reinosa) using statistical models as objective estimation techniques. These models were developed based on three different approaches: partial least squares regression (PLSR), artificial neural networks (ANNs) and an alternative approach consisting of principal component analysis (PCA) coupled with ANNs (PCA-ANN). Additionally, these models were externally validated using previously unseen data. The results show that the models developed in this work based on PLSR and ANNs fulfil the EU uncertainty requirements for objective estimation techniques and provide an acceptable estimation of the mean values. As a consequence, they could be considered as an alternative to experimental measurements for air quality assessment regarding the aforementioned pollutants in the study areas while saving time and resources. The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness through the Project CMT2010-16068. The authors also thank the Regional Environment Ministry of the Cantabria Government for providing the PM10 samples at the Castro Urdiales and Reinosa sites
