Fluid identities: poetry and the navigation of mixed ethnicities in Late Antique Gaul

This paper uses the work of Late Antique (4th-6th century) Latin poets to demonstrate the ways that pre-modern sources can be a part of scholarly discussions of the development of environmental imaginations and can usefully contribute to the development of the environmental humanities. The three poets (Ausonius, Sidonius Apollinaris, and Venantius Fortunatus) have many works that explore and describe nature; one theme that emerges is that they closely connected the rivers of Gaul to their concerns over political and cultural identity. Rivers, including the Rhone and the Mosel, were intricately woven into the daily life and cultural identities of 4th-6th century Gaul, and were both tangible and fluid political boundaries. These poems use rivers to confirm cultural identities, validate the Christian cultural experience, and express broader cultural and political concerns about cultural integration and hybridity.En este ensayo se utilizan textos de poetas latinos de la antigüedad tardía (siglos IV y VI) para demostrar cómo algunos recursos pre-modernos pueden formar parte de discusiones académicas sobre el desarrollo de la imaginación ambiental y contribuir al desarrollo de las humanidades ambientales. Los tres poetas que se discuten aquí—Ausonio, Sidonio Apolinar y Venancio Fortunato—tienen obras que exploran y describen la naturaleza. Uno de los temas que surgen es que ellos conectan los ríos de la Galia con su preocupación por la identidad política y cultural. Algunos ríos, entre ellos el Ródano y el Mosela, eran fronteras políticas fluidas y tangibles que estaban intrincadamente relacionadas con la vida diaria y las identidades culturales de la Galia durante los siglos IV y VI. The Interactive Effects of Caffeine and Estrogen on Memory for Word Lists

Previous research has yielded conflicting results regarding the effects of caffeine on word list recall. Erikson et al. (1985) found that caffeine impaired recall among females when words were presented at a slow rate. Arnold et al. (1988) observed a facilitory effect of caffeine on the recall, after practice, of females tested during Days 1-5 of the menstrual cycle. Research on cognitive task performance among females suggests that performance varies according to the phase of menstrual cycle. Medical research demonstrates a relationship between estrogen and caffeine metabolism. In this study, it was hypothesized that females\u27 recall of word lists would vary with level of caffeine administered and phase of the menstrual cycle. It was further hypothesized that the performances of oral contraceptive users and non-oral contraceptive users would differ. Two hundred and eight females were administered 0, 2, or 4 milligrams of caffeine per kilogram of body weight. Approximately half of the subjects used oral contraceptives. Subjects were tested during either Days 1-5 or Days 9-13 of the menstrual cycle. Subjects heard 13 lists of 12 words and wrote their recall immediately after hearing each list. The proportion of words recalled from the primacy, middle, and recency portion of each list was computed. A 3(Caffeine) x 2(Pill) x 2(Phase of Cycle) x 3(Practice) x 4(Presentation Rate) x 3(Serial Position) ANOVA was performed. A dose x serial position interaction indicated that caffeine facilitated recall for words in the primacy position. A dose x pill x phase x rate x serial position interaction was observed. Among subjects tested during Days 1-5, caffeine facilitated recall only among oral contraceptive users for words in the primacy position at the two slowest rates. Among subjects tested during Days 9-13, caffeine facilitated recall for words in the primacy position at the three slowest rates among non-oral contraceptive users and for words in the middle position at the fastest rate among oral contraceptive users. Results suggest that among females, the effects of caffeine on word list recall are modulated according to the level of estrogen in their system

The Role of Insurance Agents in the Prevention of Environmental Loss and Damage

Over the past several decades, businesses have been placed under great pressure from government and the public to avoid environmental loss and damages. To mitigate environmental loss and damages, companies purchase environmental insurance, which protects companies from direct financial liability and transfers the risk to the insurance agency. Thus, insurance companies to have a vested interest in preventing payouts to businesses by ensuring that their clients protect against environmental losses. Past literature in the field of environmental management has paid little attention to the role of insurance companies and their agents in the prevention of environmental loss and damage. However, there is anecdotal evidence that insurance agents can play an active role in helping firms identify and prevent environmental health and safety issues. Focusing on the printing industry, this study aims to better understand the role insurance agents play in helping firms manage their environmental performance. This study found that insurance companies view themselves as institutions that enhance environmental health and safety performance of manufacturing facilities by preventing environmental health and safety risks. However, it is not clear that printing firms likely do not believe insurance companies contribute to preventing environmental health and safety risks at their facilities. Thus, while there is potential for insurance companies to act as non-public governance institutions that regulate and improve the environmental performance of firms, this potential may not be being realized to its fullest extent

Social, Cultural and Behavioral Determinants of Health among Hawaii Filipinos: The Filipino Healthy Communities Project

Background/Purpose: Filipinos are Hawaii’s largest immigrant group and second largest ethnic group. The Hawaii Filipino Health Communities Project was initiated by the Hawaii State Department of Health, because of the high rates of heart disease and stroke mortality, and other behavioral risks seen among Hawaii’s Filipino population (i.e. high smoking rates among Filipino men). The project sought to gather Filipino community members’ perspectives on why such chronic disease health disparities exist for Filipinos, and identify solutions to address them. Methods: The project gathered information from both immigrant and local Filipinos throughout the state, using community engagement methods of interviews with community leaders (n=20) and community-based focus groups (n=20 groups with 130 participants), Results: Filipino community members were aware of, and community leaders well-versed in, the behavioral, cultural, and social determinants of health in their communities. However, being aware of such determinants of health has yet not resulted in changed behavior in the overall Filipino community (i.e. improved diet, increased physical activity, or better access to healthcare). Conclusion: More outreach is needed with Filipinos, along with interventions to combat health disparities in chronic disease, such as increased smoking cessation and creative ways to eat healthier and increase physical activit
