    Peripherally-metallated porphyrins: meso-n1-porphyrinyl-platinum(II) complexes of 5,15-diaryl- and 5,10,15-triarylporphyrins

    Attempted metathesis reactions of peripherally-metallated meso-η1-porphyrinylplatinum(II) complexes such as trans-[PtBr(NiDPP)(PPh3)2] (H2DPP = 5,15-diphenylporphyrin) with organolithium reagents fail due to competitive addition at the porphyrin ring carbon opposite to the metal substituent. This reaction can be prevented by using 5,10,15-triarylporphyrins, e.g. 5,10,15-triphenylporphyrin (H2TrPP) and 5-phenyl-10,20-bis(3’,5’-di-t-butylphenyl)porphyrin (H2DAPP) as substrates. These triarylporphyrins are readily prepared using the method of Senge and co-workers by addition of phenyllithium to the appropriate 5,15-diarylporphyrins, followed by aqueous protolysis and oxidation. They are convenient, soluble building blocks for selective substitutions and subsequent transformations at the remaining free meso carbon. The sequence of bromination, optional central metallation and oxidative addition of Pt(0) tris(phosphine) complexes generates the organoplatinum porphyrins in high overall yields. The bromo ligand on the Pt(II) centre can be substituted by alkynyl nucleophiles, including 5-ethynylNiDPP, to form the first examples of meso-η1-porphyrinylplatinum(II) complexes with a second Pt-C bond. The range of porphyrinylplatinum(II) bis(tertiary phosphine) complexes was extended to the triethylphosphine analogues, by oxidative addition of H2TrPPBr to Pt(PEt3)3, and the initially-formed cis adduct is only slowly thermally transformed to trans-[PtBr(H2TrPP)(PEt3)2] 16.     This study is an attempt to evaluate the procedure employed in the adoption of children in Kentucky since the enactment of the new adoption law in June, 1940, which made mandatory a social investigation during the sixty-day period required between the date of the filing of the petition and the date of the court hearing. It aims (1) to examine the operations of the Kentucky law in the area of Jefferson County tor which the records were made available by the State Department of Welfare, Child Welfare Division, Frankfort, Kentucky, and (2) to measure the local procedure by the standard of the best available knowledge and practice. In the process of examination and measurement of local procedure, it is well to bear in mind that (1) many of the adoptions studied were begun a number of years ago, without benefit of specialized adoptive-placing techniques, (2) the adoption law requiring social investigation is new and (3) the machinery set up tor its administration has not been in operation long enough tor us to evaluate its program of interpretation to the community. The community will get the kind of service in the field of adoption which it demands. For the information of those interested in the development of improved adoption practices tor all candidates tor adoption, this study will point out certain adverse aspects from which 118 may deviate in the future tor the improvement and development of better standards in adoption as related to the child welfare of this community and the state

    Survival, Reproductive Success, and Spread of Introduced Rio Grande Turkeys in Northeast Iowa

    Thirty-nine Rio Grande wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo intermedia) from Texas were introduced in the Yellow River State Forest, Allamakee County, Iowa, in the winter of 1960-61. The population was studied in three northeastern Iowa counties from June, 1966, through September, 1967; concentrated field studies were centered in and near the Paint Creek Unit of the forest. Adult turkeys appeared to tolerate the northeastern Iowa climate well, but poults may not be so tolerant. Although reproduction has occurred each year since the introduction, poult survival seemingly has been sporadic, possibly because of differences in weather conditions during the rearing seasons. Records indicate production was favorable for 1961, 1965, and 1967 compared with 1962, 1963, 1964, and 1966 when it seemed to be less so. The turkey population appeared to be rather stable by the end of the study but probably never has exceeded 100. Nevertheless, each year there has been a progressive extension of the turkeys\u27 known range. Sighting records have shown that the main inhabited turkey range was composed of 71 square miles in 1961, 100 in 1962, 108 in 1963, 139 in 1964, 149 in 1965, 316 in 1966, and 343 in 1966-67. Verified sightings have been made across the Mississippi River in Wisconsin and up to 41 miles from the release area in Iowa

    Dual-purpose self-deliverable lunar surface PV electrical power system

    A safe haven and work supported PV power systems on the lunar surface will likely be required by NASA in support of the manned outpost scheduled for the post-2000 lunar/Mars exploration and colonization initiative. Initial system modeling and computer analysis shows that the concept is workable and contains no major high risk technology issues which cannot be resolved in the circa 2000 to 2025 timeframe. A specific selection of the best suited type of electric thruster has not been done; the initial modeling was done using an ion thruster, but Rocketdyne must also evaluate arc and resisto-jets before a final design can be formulated. As a general observation, it appears that such a system can deliver itself to the Moon using many system elements that must be transported as dead payload mass in more conventional delivery modes. It further appears that a larger power system providing a much higher safe haven power level is feasible if this delivery system is implemented, perhaps even sufficient to permit resource prospecting and/or lab experimentation. The concept permits growth and can be expanded to include cargo transport such as habitat and working modules. In short, the combined payload could be manned soon after landing and checkout. NASA has expended substantial resources in the development of electric propulsion concepts and hardware that can be applied to a lunar transport system such as described herein. In short, the paper may represent a viable mission on which previous investments play an invaluable role. A more comprehensive technical paper which embodies second generation analysis and system size will be prepared for near-term presentation
