    Optimization of reliable cyclic cable layouts in offshore wind farms

    A novel approach for optimizing reliable cable layouts in offshore wind farms is presented. While optimization models traditionally are designed to suggest acyclic cable routes, those developed in this work recognize that cyclic layouts reduce the consequences of cable failures. The models under study take into account that cables cannot cross each other, which, particularly in instances with restrictive cable capacity, can make it attractive to let cables follow a joint trajectory, and visit turbines without connecting to them. A two-layered optimization process is developed. The outer layer is associated with an integer programming problem, which is subject to simultaneous generation of rows and columns representing cable paths. In the inner layer, a problem identifying feasible low cost paths is solved, guided by optimal dual variable values in the continuous relaxation of the former problem. Results from experimental applications to existing wind farms show good promise of the method.publishedVersio

    A review of choice-based revenue management : theory and methods

    Over the last fifteen years, the theory and practice of revenue management has experienced significant developments due to the need to incorporate customer choice behavior. In this paper, we portray these developments by reviewing the key literature on choice-based revenue management, specifically focusing on methodological publications of availability control over the years 2004–2017. For this purpose, we first state the choice-based network revenue management problem by formulating the underlying dynamic program, and structure the review according to its components and the resulting inherent challenges. In particular, we first focus on the demand modeling by giving an overview of popular choice models, discussing their properties, and describing estimation procedures relevant to choice-based revenue management. Second, we elaborate on assortment optimization, which is a fundamental component of the problem. Third, we describe recent developments on tackling the entire control problem. We also discuss the relation to dynamic pricing. Finally, we give directions for future research

    Versatile compressive microscope for hyperspectral transmission and fluorescence lifetime imaging

    Increasing demand for multimodal characterization and imaging of new materials entails the combination of various methods in a single microscopic setup. Hyperspectral imaging of transmission spectra or photoluminescence (PL) decay imaging count among the most used methods. Nevertheless, these methods require very different working conditions and instrumentation. Therefore, combining the methods into a single microscopic system is seldom implemented. Here we demonstrate a novel versatile microscope based on single-pixel imaging, where we use a simple optical configuration to measure the hyperspectral information, as well as fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM). The maps are inherently spatially matched and can be taken with spectral resolution limited by the resolution of the used spectrometer (3 nm) or temporal resolution set by PL decay measurement (120 ps). We verify the system's performance by its comparison to the standard FLIM and non-imaging transmission spectroscopy. Our approach enabled us to switch between a broad field-of-view and micrometer resolution without changing the optical configuration. At the same time, the used design opens the possibility to add a variety of other characterization methods.     Floridian high-voltage power-grid network partitioning and cluster optimization using simulated annealing

    Many partitioning methods may be used to partition a network into smaller clusters while minimizing the number of cuts needed. However, other considerations must also be taken into account when a network represents a real system such as a power grid. In this paper we use a simulated annealing Monte Carlo (MC) method to optimize initial clusters on the Florida high-voltage power-grid network that were formed by associating each load with its "closest" generator.     A review of revenue management : recent generalizations and advances in industry applications

    Originating from passenger air transport, revenue management has evolved into a general and indispensable methodological framework over the last decades, comprising techniques to manage demand actively and to further improve companies’ profits in many different industries. This article is the second and final part of a paper series surveying the scientific developments and achievements in revenue management over the past 15 years. The first part focused on the general methodological advances regarding choice-based theory and methods of availability control over time. In this second part, we discuss some of the most important generalizations of the standard revenue management setting: product innovations (opaque products and flexible products), upgrading, overbooking, personalization, and risk-aversion. Furthermore, to demonstrate the broad use of revenue management, we survey important industry applications beyond passenger air transportation that have received scientific attention over the years, covering air cargo, hotel, car rental, attended home delivery, and manufacturing. We work out the specific revenue management-related challenges of each industry and portray the key contributions from the literature. We conclude the paper with some directions for future research

    Designed nanomolar small-molecule inhibitors of Ena/VASP EVH1 interaction impair invasion and extravasation of breast cancer cells

    Battling metastasis through inhibition of cell motility is considered a promising approach to support cancer therapies. In this context, Ena/VASP-depending signaling pathways, in particular interactions with their EVH1 domains, are promising targets for pharmaceutical intervention. However, protein-protein interactions involving proline-rich segments are notoriously difficult to address by small molecules. Hence, structure-based design efforts in combination with the chemical synthesis of additional molecular entities are required. Building on a previously developed nonpeptidic micromolar inhibitor, we determined 22 crystal structures of ENAH EVH1 in complex with inhibitors and rationally extended our library of conformationally defined prolinederived modules (ProMs) to succeed in developing a nanomolar inhibitor (K-d = 120 nM, MW = 734 Da). In contrast to the previous inhibitor, the optimized compounds reduced extravasation of invasive breast cancer cells in a zebrafish model. This study represents an example of successful, structure-guided development of low molecular weight inhibitors specifically and selectively addressing a proline-rich sequence-recognizing domain that is characterized by a shallow epitope lacking defined binding pockets. The evolved high-affinity inhibitor may now serve as a tool in validating the basic therapeutic concept, i.e., the sup pression of cancer metastasis by inhibiting a crucial protein- protein interaction involved in actin filament processing and cell migration

    Light scattering from a periodically modulated two dimensional electron gas with partially filled Landau levels

    We study light scattering from a periodically modulated two dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular magnetic field. If a subband is partially filled, the imaginary part of the dielectric function as a function of frequency contains additional discontinuities to the case of completely filled subbands. The positions of the discontinuities may be determined from the partial filling factor and the height of the discontinuity can be directly related to the modulation potential.
