Politics, Radicalism and Anglo-German Relations: The Reception of Ernst Moritz Arndt in Early 19th-Century Britain

This essay presents the early reception of Ernst Moritz Arndt in Britain. Retrieving this largely forgotten engagement with Arndt, and engagement of Arndt as it turns out, provides two insights. On a more general level it illustrates the influence of political constellations and political expediency on the introduction and reception of authors and texts. On a more specific level, it gives an insight into the engagement of young English liberals with the (radical) political thinking of the German Wars of Liberation, especially with its liberal and spiritual aspects, and its efforts to exert influence in a growing and increasingly powerful public sphere

On density and temperature-dependent ground-state and continuum effects in the equation of state for stellar interiors -- A Comment on the paper by S. Arndt, W. Dappen and A. Nayfonov 1998, ApJ 498, 349

Misunderstandings have occurred regarding the conclusions of the paper by S. Arndt, W. Dappen and A. Nayfonov 1998, ApJ 498, 349. At occasions, its results were interpreted as if it had shown basic flaws in the general theory of dynamical screening. The aim of this comment is to emphasize in which connection the conclusions of the paper have to be understood in order to avoid misinterpretations.Comment: Astrophysical Journal (to appear 1 May 1999), 5 page

Substantial regional variation in substitution rates in the human genome: importance of GC content, gene density and telomere-specific effects

This study presents the first global, 1 Mbp level analysis of patterns of nucleotide substitutions along the human lineage. The study is based on the analysis of a large amount of repetitive elements deposited into the human genome since the mammalian radiation, yielding a number of results that would have been difficult to obtain using the more conventional comparative method of analysis. This analysis revealed substantial and consistent variability of rates of substitution, with the variability ranging up to 2-fold among different regions. The rates of substitutions of C or G nucleotides with A or T nucleotides vary much more sharply than the reverse rates suggesting that much of that variation is due to differences in mutation rates rather than in the probabilities of fixation of C/G vs. A/T nucleotides across the genome. For all types of substitution we observe substantially more hotspots than coldspots, with hotspots showing substantial clustering over tens of Mbp's. Our analysis revealed that GC-content of surrounding sequences is the best predictor of the rates of substitution. The pattern of substitution appears very different near telomeres compared to the rest of the genome and cannot be explained by the genome-wide correlations of the substitution rates with GC content or exon density. The telomere pattern of substitution is consistent with natural selection or biased gene conversion acting to increase the GC-content of the sequences that are within 10-15 Mbp away from the telomere.Comment: 35 pages, 6 figure

When the reaper becomes a salesman: The influence of terror management on product preferences

    Get PDF
The present research investigates how consumer choice is affected by Terror Management Theory’s proposition of Mortality Salience increasing one’s cultural worldview defense and self-esteem striving. The study builds empirically upon prior theorizing by Arndt, Solomon, Kasser and Sheldon (2004). During an experiment, we manipulated Mortality Salience and measured product preferences for conspicuousness and familiarity. Participants primed with death were more likely to choose conspicuous products, corroborating previous research of mortality salience raising materialistic tendencies. In addition, participants showed a tendency to prefer familiar brands. These results are in line with the Terror Management Theory framework

The Electoral Consequences of Third Way Welfare State Reforms: Social Democracy's Transformation and its Political Costs

Christoph Arndt is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Aarhus University in Denmark. His book provided a cross-national, comparative policy analysis which "demonstrates that Third Way reforms went against the social policy preferences of social democracy's core voters and indeed produced an electoral setback for social democrats at the ballots." (Arndt,2013, p.282).This term "Third Way" refers to various political positions which try to reconcile right-wing and left-wing politics by advocating a varying synthesis of right-wing economic and left-wing social policies (Bobbio&Cameron,1997).This book is the eighteenth in the Changing Welfare States series, and provides a comparative study of the electoral consequences of Third Way welfare state reforms. It investigates whether Third Way reforms alienated traditional social democratic core constituents and shed some light on the factors causing variations between countries. The book’s main argument is that Third Way reforms indeed produced an electoral setback for social democrats and that the nature of the setback is contingent on the electoral system and the party competition social democrats face when reforming the welfare state (Arndt, 2013, p. 24). Regarding the Changing Welfare States series, it is important to note that "the overriding objective of the series is tracing and explaining the full trajectories of contemporary welfare state changes and its outcomes" (Arndt, 2013, p.2). The welfare state may be narrowly described in old school traditional ways, in addressing the “social risks of old age, unemployment, sickness(including the health care system), disability, poverty and inequality in general”, or in new school ways including the "social risks that have arisen mainly due to post-industrialization, such as reconciling work and family life, non-standard employment, and low and inadequate skills" (Arndt, 2013, p. 2)
