    Hydrodechlorination of Aroclor 1260 in aqueous two-phase mixture catalyzed by biogenerated bimetallic catalysts

    The PCBs are known recalcitrant and toxic pollutants and significant values of contamination could be found in water. PCBs can be hydrodechlorinated using Pd-based catalysts and hydrogen, but the research to identify more efficient heterogeneous catalysts, able to work in an aqueous phase, less sensible to deactivation and easily removable at the end of the treatment, remains a considerable interesting goal. A strain of Klebsiella oxytoca, DSM 29614, known to produce a specific exopolysaccaride (EPS), was grown in different media with sodium citrate or with sodium citrate plus ferric citrate, as sole energy and carbon sources under anaerobic conditions. The cultures were amended with 50 mg of palladium as Pd(NO3)2 to generate Pd-EPS (Pd content 13%) or FePd-EPS (Pd content 8.4%; Fe 7.4%) species which were secreted from the cells, isolated by treatment with a cold ethanol solution (70%) and dried under vacuum as powders. The catalytic ability of these mono- and bi-metallic species was tested in the hydrodechlorination reaction of the Aroclor 1260 PCBs mixture under aqueous biphasic conditions. Here we demonstrate that the degree of PCBs hydrodechlorination is dependent by the nature of catalyst and of base used to neutralize HCl produced, the bimetallic species being more active and an organic base resulting more effective. Working with a substrate/catalyst 8/1 molar ratio, at 3 MPa H2 and 60°C in 20 h a significant removal of highly chl orinated PCBs was obtained under the best conditions. The result seems promising for remediation of groundwater contaminated with PCBs

    Improved multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification analysis identifies a deleterious PMS2 allele generated by recombination with crossover between PMS2 and PMS2CL

    Heterozygous PMS2 germline mutations are associated with Lynch syndrome. Up to one third of these mutations are genomic deletions. Their detection is complicated by a pseudogene (PMS2CL), which - owing to extensive interparalog sequence exchange - closely resembles PMS2 downstream of exon 12. A recently redesigned multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) assay identifies PMS2 copy number alterations with improved reliability when used with reference DNAs containing equal numbers of PMS2- and PMS2CL-specific sequences. We selected eight such reference samples - all publicly available - and used them with this assay to study 13 patients with PMS2-defective colorectal tumors. Three presented deleterious alterations: an Alu-mediated exon deletion; a 125-kb deletion encompassing PMS2 and four additional genes (two with tumor-suppressing functions); and a novel deleterious hybrid PMS2 allele produced by recombination with crossover between PMS2 and PMS2CL, with the breakpoint in intron 10 (the most 5' breakpoint of its kind reported thus far). We discuss mechanisms that might generate this allele in different chromosomal configurations (and their diagnostic implications) and describe an allele-specific PCR assay that facilitates its detection. Our data indicate that the redesigned PMS2 MLPA assay is a valid first-line option. In our series, it identified roughly a quarter of all PMS2 mutations. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

    Appendiceal collision tumors: case reports, management and literature review

    Appendiceal tumors are incidentally detected in 0.5% cases of appendectomy for acute appendicitis and occur in approximately 1% of all appendectomies. Here, we report two cases of appendiceal collision tumors in two asymptomatic women. In both cases, imaging revealed right-lower-quadrant abdominal masses, which were laparoscopically resected. In both cases, histological examinations revealed an appendiceal collision tumor comprising a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm and well-differentiated neuroendocrine neoplasm (NEN). For complete oncological control, right hemicolectomy was performed in one patient for the aggressive behavior of NEN; however, histology revealed no metastasis. The other patient only underwent appendectomy. No further treatment was recommended. According to the latest guidelines, exact pathology needs to be defined. Proper management indicated by a multidisciplinary team is fundamental

    A new biogenerated Rh-based catalyst for aqueous biphasic hydroformylation

    A new bio-generated rhodium based system embedded in a peculiar polysaccharide matrix (Rh-EPS), was obtained and purified from cultures of bacterial cells of Klebsiella oxytoca DSM 29614. The product was analyzed with different techniques to obtain information on its structure-property correlation.     Cowden’s disease with extensive gastrointestinal polyposis

    Cowden’s disease, or multiple hamartoma syndrome, is a rare condition classified recently as a hereditary preneoplastic syndrome. Multiple orocutaneous hamartomas are associated with involvement of other organ systems, including fibrocystic breast disease and breast carcinoma, goiter, thyroid cancer, gastrointestinal polyps, and endometrial carcinoma. We describe a patient with Cowden’s disease who underwent extensive gastroenterological work-up and review other cases in the literature. © 1994 Raven Press, Ltd., New York

    Palladium(II) Complexes with N-Phosphine Oxide-Substituted Imidazolylidenes (PoxIms): Coordination Chemistry and Catalysis

    The coordination chemistry of N-phosphine oxide-substituted imidazolylidenes (PoxIms) as heteroditopic, hemilabile ligands toward palladium(II) has been investigated. Both bis-carbene and mono-carbene complexes can be prepared, but the latter are accessible only in the presence of ancillary ligands that do not easily dissociate from the metal center. The phosphanyl oxide group was found to often coordinate to palladium(II) as well, though this interaction appears to be weak as this group is indeed easily replaced by, e.g., a solvent molecule. The resulting complexes have been tested as catalysts in the low-temperature Suzuki reaction of 4-chloroanisole with phenylboronic acid and they show promise for further optimization studies

    Hybrid Organic/Inorganic Perovskite-Polymer Nanocomposites: Toward the Enhancement of Structural and Electrical Properties

    Hybrid organic/inorganic perovskite nanoparticles (NPs) have garnered remarkable research attention because of their promising photophysical properties. New and interesting properties emerge after combining perovskite NPs with semiconducting materials. Here, we report the synthesis and investigation of a composite material obtained by mixing CH3NH3PbBr3 nanocrystals with the semiconducting polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). By the combination of structural techniques and optical and magnetic spectroscopies we observed multiple effects of the perovskite NPs on the P3HT: (i) an enlargement of P3HT crystalline domains, (ii) a strong p-doping of the P3HT, and (iii) an enhancement of interchain order typical of H-aggregates. These observations open a new avenue toward innovative perovskite NP-based applications
