    Cross-coupling methodology in the synthesis of luminescent metal complexes and multimetallic assemblies

    The synthesis of a series of complexes of the type [M(C^N)2(N^N)]+ is reported, where M is either iridium or rhodium, C^N is a cyclometalating ligand such as 2-phenylpyridine (ppy) and N^N is 2,2'-bipyridme (bpy) or a substituted bpy ligand. Several complexes are produced via an in situ Suzuki cross-coupling reaction between a bromo-substituted metal complex and an organic boronic acid. The introduction of fluoro-substituents in the C^N ligand is found to significantly perturb the excited state properties of such complexes, whilst species containing bpy ligands appended with dimethylamino, pyridyl or hydroxy functionalities display pH responsive photophysical properties. The Suzuki cross-coupling reaction is further extended to the controlled synthesis of multimetallic arrays containing from two to eight metal centres. This is achieved via the coupling of bromo-substituted metal complexes with previously unreported ruthenium, iridium or rhodium complexes bearing bpy ligands with boronic acid substituents. The regioselective brominatìon of ppy ligands already bound to metal centres allows for the elaboration of dimeric systems to tetrameric systems, and tetrameric systems to octameric systems by exploiting the same coupling reaction. Access to well-defined mixed metal species is achieved, including a tetrameric species which incorporates rhodium, iridium and ruthenium moieties. Similarly, imsymmetrical bridging units are simply created and can contain either bpy, ppy or 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine (tpy) coordinating units. Photophysical investigations reveal that the energy transfer properties of these multimetallic assemblies, which contain simple phenyl bridging units between the bpy, ppy or tpy ligands, can be reliably predicted from the properties of the constituent building blocks. That is to say that the bridging ligand does not alter the relative excited state energies of the complexes when they are incorporated as building blocks in extended systems. This allows for the design of energy-channelling multimetallic species, potentially applicable to solar energy conversion devices

    GPU Concurrency: Weak Behaviours and Programming Assumptions

    Concurrency is pervasive and perplexing, particularly on graphics processing units (GPUs). Current specifications of languages and hardware are inconclusive; thus programmers often rely on folklore assumptions when writing software. To remedy this state of affairs, we conducted a large empirical study of the concurrent behaviour of deployed GPUs. Armed with litmus tests (i.e. short concurrent programs), we questioned the assumptions in programming guides and vendor documentation about the guarantees provided by hardware. We developed a tool to generate thousands of litmus tests and run them under stressful workloads. We observed a litany of previously elusive weak behaviours, and exposed folklore beliefs about GPU programming---often supported by official tutorials---as false. As a way forward, we propose a model of Nvidia GPU hardware, which correctly models every behaviour witnessed in our experiments.     Audiovisual Biofeedback Improves Cine-Magnetic Resonance Imaging Measured Lung Tumor Motion Consistency.

    PURPOSE: To assess the impact of an audiovisual (AV) biofeedback on intra- and interfraction tumor motion for lung cancer patients. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Lung tumor motion was investigated in 9 lung cancer patients who underwent a breathing training session with AV biofeedback before 2 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sessions. The breathing training session was performed to allow patients to become familiar with AV biofeedback, which uses a guiding wave customized for each patient according to a reference breathing pattern. In the first MRI session (pretreatment), 2-dimensional cine-MR images with (1) free breathing (FB) and (2) AV biofeedback were obtained, and the second MRI session was repeated within 3-6 weeks (mid-treatment). Lung tumors were directly measured from cine-MR images using an auto-segmentation technique; the centroid and outlier motions of the lung tumors were measured from the segmented tumors. Free breathing and AV biofeedback were compared using several metrics: intra- and interfraction tumor motion consistency in displacement and period, and the outlier motion ratio. RESULTS: Compared with FB, AV biofeedback improved intrafraction tumor motion consistency by 34% in displacement (P=.019) and by 73% in period (P<.001). Compared with FB, AV biofeedback improved interfraction tumor motion consistency by 42% in displacement (P<.046) and by 74% in period (P=.005). Compared with FB, AV biofeedback reduced the outlier motion ratio by 21% (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrated that AV biofeedback significantly improved intra- and interfraction lung tumor motion consistency for lung cancer patients. These results demonstrate that AV biofeedback can facilitate consistent tumor motion, which is advantageous toward achieving more accurate medical imaging and radiation therapy procedures

    Significance of herpesvirus immediate early gene expression in cellular immunity to cytomegalovirus infection

    Interstitial pneumonia linked with reactivation of latent human cytomegalovirus due to iatrogenic immunosuppression can be a serious complication of bone marrow transplantation therapy of aplastic anaemia and acute leukaemia1. Cellular immunity plays a critical role in the immune surveillance of inapparent cytomegalovirus infections in man and the mouse1−7. The molecular basis of latency, however, and the interaction between latently or recurrently infected cells and the immune system of the host are poorfy understood. We have detected a so far unknown antigen in the mouse model. This antigen is found in infected cells in association with the expression of the herpesvirus 'immediate early' genes and is recognized by cytolytic T lymphocytes (CTL)8. We now demonstrate that an unexpectedly high proportion of the CTL precursors generated in vivo during acute murine cytomegalovirus infection are specific for cells that selectively synthesize immediate early proteins, indicating an immunodominant role of viral non-structural proteins

    Mycobacterium tuberculosis produces two homologous chaperonin (Cpn)60 proteins, Cpn60.1 and Cpn60.2 (Hsp65). Both proteins stimulate human and murine monocyte cytokine synthesis but, unlike Cpn60 proteins from other microbial species, fail to stimulate the breakdown of cultured murine bone. Here, we have examined the mechanism of action of these proteins on bone remodelling and osteoclastogenesis, induced in vitro in murine calvarial explants and the murine monocyte cell line RAW264.7. Additionally, we have determined their effect on bone remodelling in vivo in an animal model of arthritis. Recombinant Cpn60.1 but not Cpn60.2 inhibited bone breakdown both in vitro, in murine calvaria and in vivo, in experimental arthritis. Analysis of the mechanism of action of Cpn60.1 suggests that this protein works by directly blocking the synthesis of the key osteoclast transcription factor, nuclear factor of activated T cells c1. The detection of circulating immunoreactive intact Cpn60.1 in a small number of patients with tuberculosis but not in healthy controls further suggests that the skeleton may be affected in patients with tuberculosis. Taken together, these findings reveal that M. tuberculosis Cpn60.1 is a potent and novel inhibitor of osteoclastogenesis both in vitro and in vivo and a potential cure for bone-resorptive diseases like osteoporosis

    Fetal Movement Counting Using Optical Fibre Sensors

    Daily fetal movement counting based on maternal perception is widely deployed to monitor fetal wellbeing. However, the counting performed by the mother is prone to errors for various reasons. There are limited devices on the market that can provide reliable and automatic counting. This paper presents a prototype of a novel fetal movement monitoring device based on fibre Bragg grating sensors. Deformation of the skin caused by a fetal movement can lead to a change of the strain and stress on the optical fibre sensors, therefore can induce distortions to the breathing pattern of the mother. In the study data was gathered by the sensors through strain measurement and was post-processed using independent component analysis (ICA) and high-pass filtering to show the instances of the fetal movements. Information gathered during user trials with the prototype suggests that the system detects significantly higher numbers of fetus movements than that observed based on the mother’s perception. Among the various techniques available for fetal movement monitoring, fibre optic sensing provides many advantages including multiplex capability, flexibility and minimal size, making the concept an attractive solution for reliable monitoring of antenatal fetal movements

    Environmentally friendly analysis of emerging contaminants by pressurized hot water extraction-stir bar sorptive extraction-derivatization and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

    This work describes the development, optimiza- tion, and validation of a new method for the simultaneous determination of a wide range of pharmaceuticals (beta- blockers, lipid regulators ... ) and personal care products (fragrances, UV filters, phthalates ... ) in both aqueous and solid environmental matrices. Target compounds were extracted from sediments using pressurized hot water ex- traction followed by stir bar sorptive extraction. The first stage was performed at 1,500 psi during three static extrac- tion cycles of 5 min each after optimizing the extraction temperature (50 – 150 °C) and addition of organic modifiers (% methanol) to water, the extraction solvent. Next, aqueous extracts and water samples were processed using polydime- thylsiloxane bars. Several parameters were optimized for this technique, including extraction and desorption time, ionic strength, presence of organic modifiers, and pH. Fi- nally, analytes were extracted from the bars by ultrasonic irradiation using a reduced amount of solvent (0.2 mL) prior to derivatization and gas chromatography – mass spectrome- try analysis. The optimized protocol uses minimal amounts of organic solvents (<10 mL/sample) and time ( ≈ 8 h/sam- ple) compared to previous ex isting methodologies. Low standard deviation (usually below 10 %) and limits of de- tection (sub-ppb) vouch for the applicability of the method- ology for the analysis of target compounds at trace levels.     Treating asthma with omega-3 fatty acids: where is the evidence? A systematic review

    BACKGROUND: Considerable interest exists in the potential therapeutic value of dietary supplementation with the omega-3 fatty acids. Given the interplay between pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids, and the less pro-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, it has been thought that the latter could play a key role in treating or preventing asthma. The purpose was to systematically review the scientific-medical literature in order to identify, appraise, and synthesize the evidence for possible treatment effects of omega-3 fatty acids in asthma. METHODS: Medline, Premedline, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, CAB Health, and, Dissertation Abstracts were searched to April 2003. We included randomized controlled trials (RCT's) of subjects of any age that used any foods or extracts containing omega-3 fatty acids as treatment or prevention for asthma. Data included all asthma related outcomes, potential covariates, characteristics of the study, design, population, intervention/exposure, comparators, and co interventions. RESULTS: Ten RCT's were found pertinent to the present report. CONCLUSION: Given the largely inconsistent picture within and across respiratory outcomes, it is impossible to determine whether or not omega-3 fatty acids are an efficacious adjuvant or monotherapy for children or adults. Based on this systematic review we recommend a large randomized controlled study of the effects of high-dose encapsulated omega-3 fatty acids on ventilatory and inflammatory measures of asthma controlling diet and other asthma risk factors. This review was limited because Meta-analysis was considered inappropriate due to missing data; poorly or heterogeneously defined populations, interventions, intervention-comparator combinations, and outcomes. In addition, small sample sizes made it impossible to meaningfully assess the impact on clinical outcomes of co-variables. Last, few significant effects were found

    CSR Communication Research: A Theoretical-cum-Methodological Perspective From Semiotics

    Despite the proliferation of studies on corporate social responsibility (CSR), there is a lack of consensus and a cardinal methodological base for research on the quality of CSR communication. Over the decades, studies in this space have remained conflicting, unintegrated, and sometimes overlapping. Drawing on semiotics—a linguistic-based theoretical and analytical tool, our article explores an alternative perspective to evaluating the quality and reliability of sustainability reports. Our article advances CSR communication research by introducing a theoretical-cum-methodological perspective which provides unique insights into how to evaluate the quality of CSR communication. Particularly, we illustrate the application of our proposed methodology on selected U.K. FTSE 100 companies. Our two-phased analysis employed the Greimas Canonical Narrative Schema and the Semiotic Square of Veridiction in drawing meanings from selected sustainability/CSR reports. In addition, we present a distinctive CSR report quality model capable of guiding policy makers and firms in designing sustainability/CSR reporting standards
