    Sib Hlub Sib Pab as Cultural Capital: Community Cultural Wealth, Radical Love, and a HMoob Language Teacher’s Determination

    This theoretical article examines a form of cultural capital, sib hlub sib pab as capital, that emerged out of my dissertation research with HMoob American teachers. Drawing on the structure of Yosso’s (2005) theory of community cultural wealth (CCW) and literature on radical love (Freire, 1970; hooks, 2003, 2006), this article outlines an alternative form of cultural capital: sib hlub sib pab as capital, which encompasses an obligation to community and relationality rooted in radical love. Although this is a primarily theoretical article, I provide an excerpt from an interview with a HMoob language teacher and her struggles with building curriculum in isolation and with few resources, as well as her determination to develop curriculum for future generations of teachers and students of HMoob language that counter logics of property. I conclude by focusing on sib hlub sib pab as capital as an emergent idea that retains critical connections to HMoob ways of knowing in this world

    The stabilizing effects of the acquired immunity on the schistosomiasis transmission modeling - the sensitivity Analysis

    A mathematical model is proposed to analyze the effects of acquired immunity on the transmission of schistosomiasis in the human host. From this model the prevalence curve dependent on four parameters can be obtained. These parameters were estimated fitting the data by the maximum likelihood method. The model showed a good retrieving capacity of real data from two endemic areas of schistosomiasis: Touros, Brazil (Schistosoma mansoni) and Misungwi, Tanzania (S. haematobium). Also, the average worm burden per person and the dispersion of parasite per person in the community can be obtained from the model. In this paper, the stabilizing effects of the acquired immunity assumption in the model are assessed in terms of the epidemiological variables as follows. Regarded to the prevalence curve, we calculate the confidence interval, and related to the average worm burden and the worm dispersion in the community, the sensitivity analysis (the range of the variation) of both variables with respect to their parameters is performed.637

    Respiratory and allergic health effects in a young population in proximity of a major industrial park in Oman

    Background: The Sohar Industrial Zone (SIZ), Oman, which started operating in 2006, contains many industries that potentially affect health of the local population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the health effects in a young population living near SIZ. Methods: Retrospective health care visits for acute respiratory diseases (ARD), asthma, conjunctivitis and dermatitis for children of ages 5-10, ≥20 km to represent high, intermediate and control exposure zones respectively. Age and gender-specific monthly counts of visits of the selected diseases were modeled using generalized additive models controlling for time trends. The high and intermediate exposure zones were later combined together due to similarity of associations. Exposure effect modification by age, gender and socioeconomic status (SES) was also tested. Results: Living within 10 km from SIZ showed greater association with ARD (RR: 2.5; 95% CI: 2.3-2.7)), asthma (RR: 3.7; 95% CI: 3.1-4.5), conjunctivitis (RR: 3.1; 95% CI: 2.9-3.5), and dermatitis (RR: 2.7; 95% CI: 2.5-3.0) when compared to the control zone. No differences in associations were found for gender and SES groups; greater effects were noticed in the ≤14 years old group for asthma. Conclusion: This is the first study conducted in Oman examining the health effects of a young population living in proximity of an industrial park. We hope that these findings will contribute in future developments of environmental and public health policies in Oman

    A first glance to the quality assessment of dental photostimulable phosphor plates with deep learning

    Photostimulable Phosphor Plates are commonly used in digital X-ray imaging for dentistry. During its usage, these plates get damaged, influencing the diagnosis performance and confidence of the dentistry professional. We propose a deep learning based classifier to discard or extend the use of photostimulable phosphor (PSP) plates based on their physical damage. The system automatically assesses, for the first time in the literature, when dentists should discard their plates. To validate our methodology, an in-house dataset is built on 25 PSP artifact masks (Carestream, CS 7600) digitally superimposed over 100 Complementary Metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) periapical images (Carestream, RVG 6200) with known radiologic interpretations. From these 2500 images, unique subsets of 100 images were evaluated by 25 dentists to find periapical inflammatory lesions on the tooth. Doctors’ opinion on whether the plates should be discarded or not was also collected. State-of-the-art deep convolutional networks were tested using fivefold cross validation, yielding classification accuracies from 87% to almost 89%. Specifically, InceptionV3 and Resnet50 obtained the best performances with statistical significance. Qualitative heat-maps showed that such models can identify and employ artifacts to decide on whether to discard the PSP plate or not. This work intends to be the base line for future works related to the automatic PSP plate assessment

    Anti-hLAMP2-antibodies and dual positivity for anti-GBM and MPO-ANCA in a patient with relapsing pulmonary-renal syndrome

    Background Pulmonary-renal syndrome associated with anti-glomerular basement membrane (GBM) antibodies, also known as Goodpasture's syndrome, is a rare but acute and life-threatening condition. One third of patients presenting as anti-GBM antibody positive pulmonary-renal syndrome or rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis are also tested positive for anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA). Whilst anti-GBM disease is considered a non-relapsing condition, the long-term course of double-positive patients is less predictable. Case Presentation We report a patient with such dual positivity, who presented with pulmonary hemorrhage, crescentic glomerulonephritis and membranous nephropathy. Plasmapheresis in combination with immunosuppresive therapy led to a rapid remission but the disease relapsed after two years. The serum of the patient was tested positive for antibodies to human lysosomal membrane protein 2 (hLAMP2), a novel autoantigen in patients with active small-vessel vasculitis (SVV). The anti-hLAMP2 antibody levels correlated positively with clinical disease activity in this patient. Conclusion We hypothesize that this antibody may indicate a clinical course similar to ANCA-associated vasculitis in double-positive patients. However, this needs to be confirmed on comprehensive patient cohorts
