Mainstreaming Gender Into Project Cycle Management in the Fisheries Sector
This manual has been prepared to facilitate gender analysis and project planning in fisheries development projects. It is intended to be a toolkit to help project managers and implementing counterparts (such as extensionists, government and non-government field workers, and private- and public-sector development consultants, community organizers and leaders of local groups), to facilitate the integration of gender issues into the project cycle
Modeling Structure and Resilience of the Dark Network
While the statistical and resilience properties of the Internet are no more
changing significantly across time, the Darknet, a network devoted to keep
anonymous its traffic, still experiences rapid changes to improve the security
of its users. Here, we study the structure of the Darknet and we find that its
topology is rather peculiar, being characterized by non-homogenous distribution
of connections -- typical of scale-free networks --, very short path lengths
and high clustering -- typical of small-world networks -- and lack of a core of
highly connected nodes.
We propose a model to reproduce such features, demonstrating that the
mechanisms used to improve cyber-security are responsible for the observed
topology. Unexpectedly, we reveal that its peculiar structure makes the Darknet
much more resilient than the Internet -- used as a benchmark for comparison at
a descriptive level -- to random failures, targeted attacks and cascade
failures, as a result of adaptive changes in response to the attempts of
dismantling the network across time.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Motif-based communities in complex networks
Community definitions usually focus on edges, inside and between the
communities. However, the high density of edges within a community determines
correlations between nodes going beyond nearest-neighbours, and which are
indicated by the presence of motifs. We show how motifs can be used to define
general classes of nodes, including communities, by extending the mathematical
expression of Newman-Girvan modularity. We construct then a general framework
and apply it to some synthetic and real networks
Systemic inflammation and residual viraemia in HIV-positive adults on protease inhibitor monotherapy: a cross-sectional study.
Increased levels of markers of systemic inflammation have been associated with serious non-AIDS events even in patients on fully suppressive antiretroviral therapy. We explored residual viremia and systemic inflammation markers in patients effectively treated with ritonavir-boosted protease inhibitor monotherapy (PImono)
Modelling diffusion of innovations in a social network
A new simple model of diffusion of innovations in a social network with
upgrading costs is introduced. Agents are characterized by a single real
variable, their technological level. According to local information agents
decide whether to upgrade their level or not balancing their possible benefit
with the upgrading cost. A critical point where technological avalanches
display a power-law behavior is also found. This critical point is
characterized by a macroscopic observable that turns out to optimize
technological growth in the stationary state. Analytical results supporting our
findings are found for the globally coupled case.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. Final version accepted in PR
We report 185 cases of distal radius fractures treated by closed reduction and percutaneous Kirschner wire fixation. Final functional results were good or excellent in 156 of the 185 cases (84,3%). In view of the results, we think that the method is simple, useful and cheap, and must value its use in the majority of the distal radius fractures
Electrochemical corrosion and inhibition mechanisms of galvannealed steel
[EN] The corrosion mechanism of galvannealed in 0,6 M NaCl has been evaluated by means of
electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). After 48 hours and for longer immersion
time, up to 1 month, in sodium chloride, the system is controlled by a diffusion process at
finite layer. Moreover, the effectiveness of cerium salts as inhibitor added in the electrolyte
has been studied. Inhibition percentages of about 85% for 500 and 1000 ppm at 24
hours have been found. On the hand, changes in the corrosion mechanism due to the
cerium presence were shown.Peer reviewe
